KUALA LUMPUR, May 19, 2008 – Saudi Arabia’s Knowledge Economic City Developers Company Ltd (KECD); developer of the USD8 billion Knowledge Economic City (KEC) in Al-Madinah has enlisted Malaysia’s iTopia to develop its smart city vision.

A contract for iTopia’s consultancy services was signed today during the 16th World Congress of Information Technology (WCIT) 2008 held at the Kuala Lumpur City Centre. KECD’s CEO Eng. Tahir Bawazir and iTopia Managing Director Mr. Ng See Nguan signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations.

Eng. Tahir said iTopia will provide consultancy and design services, content and intelligent city services, network development and other telecommunications services for the development of KEC.

This also includes the provision of Quality Control (QC) services in the design of the systems and approach to be used and implemented by reviewing all the technology project components of the Knowledge Economic City.

iTopia Managing Director Mr Ng See Nguan described the provision of consulting services as the first step in this strategic alliance.

“We are focused on the development of smart city business opportunities in Saudi Arabia. KECD’s vision of creating a smart city environment is exciting as it not only encompasses today’s ideas, but also enables KECD to draw on the future concepts and technologies as it evolves and sets the benchmark for other smart community developments.”

Following its launch in June 2006, KEC has signed MoUs and contracts with several Malaysian companies as well as the government. They include the Malaysian Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and the Multimedia University.

“As the project develops, KEC will continue to seek investors, partners and sub-developers and also establish joint ventures with strategic partners to develop and operate key components in the project such as the theme park, educational institutions, integrated hospitality complex (that includes private medical centre, nursing and medical schools, senior assisted living community) residential, commercial and retail among others,” added Eng. Tahir.

KEC in Al-Madinah is designed to complement the government’s efforts to position Saudi Arabia as an internationally respected leader in knowledge-based industries and attract knowledge workers from around the world.

It is projected to generate more than 20,000 jobs and have a population of about 150,000 people. It is an ambitious, challenging and yet exciting project that reaches out to people of all cultures and backgrounds around the world.

KECD comprises of major Saudi companies as shareholders namely, Savola Group, Taiba Investments and Real Estate Development Company, Project Management Development Company or PMDC and Quad International Real Estate Development Co.

Knowledge Economic City was launched by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz in June 2006 and is one of the six economic cities announced by the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA).

The USD8 billion project is located at Al-Madinah, the home of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) and where the Holy Quran was compiled. The project has special significance for Muslims throughout the world because of its location and was established to be a landmark and national icon for knowledge-based industry development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Several MOUs have been signed with Malaysia’s business organizations namely Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), HELP University College and Multimedia University. Consultancy contracts have been awarded to MSC Technology Centre.

KEC has recently established four strategic alliances; namely with Cisco in January 2008 to design the technology infrastructure development for the five-million-square-meter “smart city” project, with Microsoft in February 2008 to establish a Microsoft academy - this academy will include the establishment of a Microsoft Library with IT books, trial software and other learning materials - with Technical and Vocational Training Corporation in April 2008 to provide skills development for Saudis by information and communication technology and with STC to provide free Wi-Fi Internet links supported by WiMAX in the holy city of Al Madinah.
