Gphone Evo (Android Smartphone) Review

The Gphone is a Octa Core, Android powered smartphone, currently available in Malaysia since Apr 2014- the RRP for the unit is RM899.

Octa Core means 8 cores as compared to the more common Quad core (4 cores).

When I received the demo unit, I was told that Gphone wasn't the only Octa Core smartphone in the market, Samsung had already rolled out similar specification to the market in the form of Samsung Exynos 5 Octa. Nonetheless, the person-in-charge told me that Gphone Octa Core capability is different from that of Exynos.

The Exynos 5 Octa is based on having two distinct sets of Quad cores, seamlessly switching between each others. According to the statement from the website mentioned above - "the four "big" ARM® Cortex-A15 cores would process computation-intensive tasks such as extensive gaming and media-rich browsing, the four "LITTLE" ARM® Cortex-A7 cores would handle the lighter workloads."

Hence, the idea of Exynos 5 Octa is to increase CPU performance by minimizing energy consumption.

In retrospect, Gphone Octa core is a supposedly true Octa core (8 cores permanently); and after initial testing it by running games on it, I found that battery consumption seemed to be normal - which means I found it to be energy efficient as well.

To test its high performance capability, I elected to utilize the Rightware BrowserMark benchmarking tool for mobile browser performance.

And the result of the test was amazingly great, Gphone scored 5,411 - top of the class, it even defeated previous winner Nexus 5 with score of 4604 points on 10 May 2014.

Test result from browsermark: 5,411 score

It is quite a big phonePlastic based material container
The biggest dude in the house !Rather slim guy

What I like about Gphone Evo are:

1.) WiFi connection doesn't consume too much battery power as compared to using data plan or the WiFi on iPhone - means you can always turn on the WiFi while conserving battery energy.

2.) The specification for USB battery charger and data communication connector is similar to Samsung's phone - means don't need to keep so many different types of cables.

3.) Dual SIM cards - 1 micro SIM, 1 macro SIM - this is good for those people who may use SIM cards provided by company that are macro SIM.

4.) It is Android and the deployment is fine-tuned according to Malaysian's needs.

Android means you get to download all kinds of apps from Google play and leverage on the Google platform such as Gmail and etc.

5.) The phone exterior plastic based and hence light-weighted. This is also good for long duration phone conversation which will heat up steel based container.

6.) It is multi-tasking capable.

7.) The charging of battery is faster than iPhone and MotoG.

Phone specifications:
  • GSM 900/1800MHz WCDMA 2100MHz
  • Dual SIM Dual Standby
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, upgradable to Android 4.4 Kitkat
  • 1.7GHz Octa Core
  • 5" High definition (1280 X 720) IPS OGS Touchscreen
  • 13MP Auto Focus (Rear), 5MP (front)
  • 802.11 /b/g/n
  • RAM 1 GB /ROM 16GB
  • Support microSD up to 32 GB
  • Bluetooth v4.0
  • GPS and A-GPS
  • Li-Polymer 2000mAh

So if you are in need of another Android phone for other purposes such as back-up phone or for gaming only, Gphone is a good choice - Octa core, light and easy.

the most important common feature is that they all require charging. They require a charging solution that is as mobile as the devices themselves so that full functionality at any given time is always available usb charger multi ports
