Mobile data connections and services are growing strongly in Africa, but the continent continues to lag behind most of the rest of the world in terms of high-speed broadband connectivity, according to new research by global analyst firm Ovum.

Broadband development index, ranking of regions, 2014

The number of mobile subscriptions in Africa continues to grow faster than in any other major world region, with total mobile subscriptions increasing by 9.8% year-on-year to 808 million at end-2013, compared to the global growth rate of 6.3%. At end-2Q14 Africa’s mobile subscriptions count had risen to 851 million, and Ovum expects it to cross the one billion mark in 2016 and reach 1.23 billion by end-2019.

However, fixed broadband connectivity in Africa is still very low. Fixed broadband household penetration in Africa was just 5.2% at end-2Q14, the lowest rate among major world regions.
