Singapore Consumer Confidence Index dropped one point in Q2 2015

Jul 27, 2015:

The latest Nielsen Q2 2015 Global Survey of Consumer Confidence and Spending report is also available and I will be happy to send that across upon request.

Key Singapore highlights include:
  • Job security, work/life balance and health are existing top three concerns to Singaporeans
  • Locals are drawn to greater savings and investments, which pose feasible opportunities for banking and financial services providers
  • More Singaporeans are spending on holidays and entertainment - nonetheless, thrifty consumer spending was observed

Yahoo Email Feedback

I am a fan of Yahoo - I love everything about it especially the brand name.

I am also a fan of CEO Marissa Mayer.

When the Internet came to Malaysia around 1994, Yahoo was everything we all cared about.

Hence, I chose Yahoo email over Google email as my primary email. One of the reason for choosing it over gmail is the fact that it allows creation of folder for email archiving and categorization.

It used to offer great user experience until recent upgrades, if I can remember, all of it started during the period of CEO transition.

I hope Yahoo email will find this as constructive feedback.

1.) The overall experience wasn't great anymore.

The front-end experience isn't that great.

For instance, sometimes the delete button doesn't work, sometimes checking the checkbox doesn't work.

At one point I even experienced it pointing to the wrong image file (attachment) - it pointed to an image file from another email.

Internet forums say that clearing cache will help, nonetheless, haven't experienced this lately.

IDC Survey Finds Organisations Need A More Centralised Data Strategy

Jul 21, 2015:

Commvault, a leader in enterprise data protection and information management, today announced findings from a new IDC survey and whitepaper focused on how data silos within Asia Pacific organisations are limiting the ability to make insight-based decisions, resulting in increased IT costs.

Commvault commissioned IDC to survey 600 IT decision makers across Asia Pacific and India to better understand how they can leverage data as a strategic asset, while minimising associated costs and risks. Although focused on a specific geographical location, the survey results are indicative of the common data management issues enterprises are facing around the world.

Freddie Soon, Country Manager, Commvault

Key findings of the IDC survey include:
  • The top two data management challenges for APAC and Malaysia alike include demand for easier and faster data retrieval and exponential growth and complexity of data.
  • 40 percent of IT decision makers across APAC report that backup, recovery, data protection and analytics strategies are still managed at a departmental level. IT leaders in Malaysia agree with the rest of APAC that data siloes present a major security risk, but they also consider that siloes increase the burden on
  • IT and hinder productivity and collaboration across departments.

According to Freddie Soon, Country Manager, Malaysia for Commvault, the report findings validate the necessity for speed and scale when it comes to managing business critical information.

Phony Tech Support Scams

Based on the article Phony Tech Support Scams by Blue Coat Security - phony tech support scams emerged to be a new scam trend.

Blue Coat Security, the world’s leader in enterprise security recently came across several of these sites, which at first glance, seems perfectly legitimate but on closer inspection, reveals the malicious intent of their owners.

Essentially, this type of scam campaign combines fake warning pages (hearkening back to the classic "Fake Antivirus" attacks of years past) with the more modern "Fake Tech Support" phone scam. In this way, rather than cold-calling for victims, they can induce the victims to call them -- and anyone calling in is likely to be already convinced that they do indeed have a "virus" problem.

In addition, several of these sites employed a Javascript loop to make it appear like the user’s browser was locked – adding a ransomware element to the scam. Others even incorporate the infamous blue-screen scare tactic complete with a phone number to contact "Microsoft Technicians". The site also comes with a set of pop-up warnings they cycle through.

And a key point to note, scammers are not just picking on Microsoft. Blue Coat has came across a couple of domains that appear to be targeting Macs.

Cisco’s Cognitive Threat Analytics Found Malicious Browser Add-ons

Based on the article (Bad Browser Plug-ins Gone Wild: Malvertising, Data Extraction, and Malware, Oh my!) by Sugiarto Koh, ASEAN Director for Cisco Security Business - due to rising trend of Internet advertising, malicious activity has found new ideas to dip into the wave.

Last year (2014), Cisco’s Cognitive Threat Analytics (CTA) uncovered a new threat, which our researchers have found to be a family of malicious browser add-ons. Once installed, they inject unwanted advertisements on certain pages that users visit. This provides revenue to the illegal advertisers while opening a channel to track and extract end user data and potentially deliver further malware.

Data from CTA found that the same threat disguises itself with over 4000 different names as add-ons - with common behaviour.

Once loaded on the operating system (OS), the plug-in monitors a user’s browsing session, extracts visited URLs, and introduces a frame with a disguised URL on the visited page. This URL will then load the advertising that appears on the users screen.

With the dynamic nature of these attacks, identifying and blocking adware, malware, and the extraction of data requires a multi-tiered security approach. By investing in new detection methodologies, such as Cisco’s Cognitive Threat Analytics (CTA), users will be able to identify new actors and new techniques, reducing the time needed to detect threats in environments.
