PR - Jul 21, 2015 - Shanghai Jiao Tong University Selects Brocade for Next-Generation Network Backbone

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has deployed a new 10 Gbps network backbone spanning its five campuses to accommodate the continued growth of data traffic from academic and administrative systems. Based around Brocade® MLXe Core Routers, the new backbone has enabled the university to reduce costs and streamline management by migrating applications that previously ran over separate networks, onto a single infrastructure.

The routers are built with sixth-generation network processor-based architecture and terabit-scale switch fabrics that enable the university to run the backbone at 10 Gbps -- with the capability to support 40 and 100 Gbps wire-speed interfaces if and when they are needed. They provide a rich set of high-performance Layer 2/3, IPv4, IPv6, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), wire-speed encryption, and SDN features. MPLS is being used by SJTU to segment the backbone into virtual networks that accommodate different application streams, including campus CCTV and the YiKaTong smart card access system that previously ran on physically separate networks.

The Brocade solution paves the way for SJTU to pursue its interests in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), both at an academic level and to support digital campus service innovation. The Brocade MLX® Series enables SDN by supporting the OpenFlow 1.3 protocol that allows communication between an OpenFlow-enabled router and an OpenFlow SDN controller such as the Brocade SDN Controller, which is based on the Linux Foundation's OpenDaylight project. Because the Brocade devices support OpenFlow Hybrid Port Mode, SJTU can simultaneously deploy traditional routing with OpenFlow on the same port. This unique capability provides a pragmatic path to SDN by supporting the integration of OpenFlow into existing networks, enabling programmatic control offered by SDN for specific flows while the remaining traffic is routed as before.

Ovum - Jul 21, 2015 - Ovum says Sub-US$100 smartphones to generate 40% of unit sales by 2020

According to a new forecast* by the independent telecoms analyst firm Ovum, total handset sales are expected to grow from 1.88 billion to 2.16 billion units between 2014 and 2020, at a compound annual growth (CAGR) rate of 2.4 per cent.

Smartphones will comprise 95% of global handset sales by 2020, up from 65% in 2014, and will first exceed 2 billion unit sales in 2020. Android and iOS devices will continue to lead the market with 80% and 14% smartphone volume market share respectively in 2020, almost identical to 2014. Handsets based on Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS will capture most of the remaining market with a 4.2% market share in 2020, equivalent to 86 million unit sales.

Juniper Research - Jul 20, 2015 - Payment Volume Soars as WeChat Introduces P2P Service

A new report from Juniper Research has found that the number of mobile money transfers is expected to increase by nearly 150% in 2015 to more than 13bn, with several social media firms already seeing a dramatic rise in service usage.

The report observed that with US social payment service Venmo now experiencing traffic worth nearly $1 billion per quarter, leading social media companies were now introducing their own services. Snapchat has partnered with Square to deliver a P2P offering, while Facebook launched a US-wide service last month.

PR - Jul 16, 2015 - Virginia Tech researcher develops model for robots with bacterial brains

In a paper published today in Scientific Reports (http://www.nature.com/articles/srep11988), which is part of the Nature Publishing Group, a Virginia Tech scientist used a mathematical model to demonstrate that bacteria can control the behavior of an inanimate device like a robot.

"Basically we were trying to find out from the mathematical model if we could build a living microbiome on a nonliving host and control the host through the microbiome," said Warren Ruder, an assistant professor of biological systems engineering in both the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (http://www.cals.vt.edu/) and the College of Engineering (https://www.eng.vt.edu).

"We found that robots may indeed be able to function with a bacterial brain," he said. For future experiments, Ruder is building real-world robots that will have the ability to read bacterial gene expression levels in E. coli using miniature fluorescent microscopes. The robots will respond to bacteria he will engineer in his lab.

On a broad scale, understanding the biochemical sensing between organisms could have far reaching implications in ecology, biology, and robotics.
