Sep 17, 2015 - KL :

Malaysia’s Global Business Services, ‘GBS’ industry (formerly and also known as ‘Shared Services & Outsourcing Industry, ‘SSO’) is in a stronger position to tap the USD670 billion global market; with several factors driving growth for the sector.

(2nd from Left) David Wong with Cheah Kok Hoong (3rd from Left) together with PIKOM and OM Council Members launching the GBS Report

This report is based on findings gathered from respondents from 15 key countries / economies; and reveals that the global GBS industry stood at USD670 billion in 2014, with APAC accounting for the largest share of 36% at USD240 billion. Of this, Malaysia’s share of the pie is comparatively small at USD4 billion, which indicates much room for growth.
  • Overall, demand that fuels GBS growth is expected to stem from the banking and financial services (‘BFSI’), government, retail and hospitality/ tourism industries.
  • Despite current economic challenges, Malaysia continues to retain its attractiveness as a leading GBS location, given the country’s continued ability to provide cost savings for buyers and its capacity to serve global markets.

Confronting IT Challenges through Hyperconvergence

Contributed Article:

Today’s enterprise IT infrastructure is a picture of complexity. Customers buy and integrate numerous products, for different functions, from as many vendors, each with different management screens, training courses, licensing, refresh cycles, and modes of operation.

Legacy IT infrastructure is complex, costly to maintain, and not designed to deal with mission critical applications running in virtualized environments for enterprises. IT leaders are looking for viable, simple, scalable and cost-effective solutions in order to maintain competitive operations. Hence, the nature of Hyperconvergence makes it a worthy consideration and it’s no wonder that Hyperconvergence has become the hottest trend in IT infrastructure!

Hyperconverging IT infrastructure

Hyperconvergence brings a simplified and consolidated computing or IT infrastructure designed for virtual workloads. Specifically, it seamlessly combines all of the IT components and services below the hypervisor into an x86 building block. This means there are no silos of independent IT components. IT teams also do not need to manage discrete devices or have specialized training in component-level technology, such as storage area networks (SANs).

This way, hyperconvergence greatly simplifies IT infrastructure, which makes operations more efficient. It improves the speed and agility of deploying resources for virtual workloads.

What is the ‘side effect’ of hyperconvergence, you may ask. Well, hyerconvergence also help enterprises to significantly reduce IT costs. Before we go in the cost savings, let us see how this innovation came about.

Barracuda Introduces Virtual Barracuda Backup Appliance

Sep 17, 2015 - KL :

Barracuda Networks, Inc., a leading provider of cloud-connected security and storage solutions, announces Barracuda Backup Vx, a new deployment option for Barracuda Backup aimed at organizations looking to reduce onsite hardware through virtualization.

Complimenting VMware vCloud Air, Barracuda Backup Vx was introduced to customers at VMworld 2015.

Barracuda Backup Vx uses both inline target-based deduplication and compression to reduce storage and bandwidth requirements, and easily scale storage as data grows, eliminating the need for forklift upgrades.

Thiban Darmalingam, the Regional Manager for Barracuda in Malaysia says, “Barracuda Backup Vx further expands the flexibility and virtualization support we’re able to offer our customers, especially those who are moving away from physical infrastructure.”

“Part of providing complete data protection means that we need to offer customers the option to deploy our products in a way that makes the most sense for their environments - whether that’s in the form of a physical appliance, a cloud solution, or a virtual appliance,” adds Thiban.

Scalable for growing environments, Barracuda Backup Vx is licensed as a per-TB capacity subscription allowing customers to pay only for what they back up.

Replication is built into each Barracuda Backup Vx subscription; customers can choose whether to replicate to the Barracuda Cloud or to a virtual receiver for disaster recovery. Replication to the Barracuda Cloud includes “Unlimited” Cloud Storage and extended retention through offsite vaulting.

Brocade Extends Leadership in Open Source Software-Defined Networking

Sep 17, 2015 - K.L :

Ninety percent of respondents in a recent survey conducted by Heavy Reading said that a truly open SDN controller with support for multiple vendors is an essential or important factor in SDN deployment plans. The same survey ranked the lack of in-house SDN expertise as the third biggest obstacle in implementing SDN.

Helping to address these needs, Brocade today announced the Brocade SDN Controller 2.0, a commercial distribution of the OpenDaylight (ODL) controller based on the Lithium ODL release, and two new software-defined networking (SDN) applications—Brocade Topology Manager and Brocade Flow Manager. These new solutions reinforce Brocade’s leadership in open source SDN, providing greater innovation, interoperability and choice while eliminating vendor lock-in for customers.

The Brocade Topology Manager is a free SDN application that displays discovered network topology, allowing administrators to create a list of nodes and conduct simple searches for nodes. Brocade Flow Manager extends these capabilities by enabling users to view and interact with the network topology using near-real-time information to perform traffic engineering and network segmentation based on end-to-end flow views. In addition, the Brocade SDN Controller now supports the recently-announced Brocade Flow Optimizer to intelligently manage traffic flow and proactively mitigate network attacks.

IT megatrends in 2015 and beyond (by Redhat)

Aug 25, 2015
By Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen, Senior VP and General Manager, Asia Pacific & Japan, Red Hat

Fundamental changes are being seen in the economy and the way business is being done today. In this age of information, organizations have to rethink the very foundation of how they operate, and move towards making things faster and economically viable, rather than the old adage of building bigger and better.
Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen, Senior VP and General Manager, APAC & Japan, Red Hat

Businesses have evolved from systems built for efficiency to systems built for innovation, with the most valuable tool today being information and the access to technology such as smart devices. Companies who have innovated and evolved on today’s technology have indisputably risen and becoming one of the world’s largest in its respective industry. For example, Uber, a taxi company, owns no cars, Facebook, a media platform, creates no content and Airbnb, a accommodation provider, owns no real estate. The common thread between these three examples is the empowerment of consumers through the use of applications (apps) across their smart devices.

Businesses today are undoubtedly under intense pressure to respond to the demand for consumer-like apps and experience. Companies, regardless of size, can no longer just rely on their assets. Businesses have to constantly reinvent themselves to stay ahead of the curve.

Summarizing key discussion topics at Red Hat Summit 2015, Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen, SVP and GM, Asia Pacific & Japan, Red Hat, highlights key technology trends that will take center stage in the next couple of years.

This New Android App Uncovers How Businesses Can Save $50 Billion Each Year

Contributed article.

You’d be surprised to find out that office theft is making business around the US lose nearly $50 billion each year. But it’s not financial fraud, or machinery theft or anything or great value that is being stolen. Companies are losing money from employee that nick inconsequential office supplies. You heard that right—when an employee nicks away notepads, pens, paper clips and sharpies, businesses lose money. And thus far, managers find it quite silly to confront an otherwise hardworking employee with the case of a missing pen. But sooner rather than later, you are going to have to bring up sticky fingers at the officeand the new Android employee monitoring app, XNSPY might just be the tool you need.

The Risks and Rewards of SSL Encryption (By Bluecoat)

Contributed By Bluecoat.

According to a recent Gartner study, SSL/TLS traffic now comprises 15-25 percent of total web traffic. Up to a third of enterprise internet traffic is now encrypted, and that figure is growing rapidly.

While encryption helps to keep private information private and secure, it is a double edged sword. “Bad guys” often use it to conceal advanced and targeted cyber threats, and to sneak out data without being noticed.

While encrypting web sessions protects end-user data from being viewed in transit over the Internet, it creates a blind spot for IT administrators; they typically have no visibility into SSL-encrypted traffic. Unfortunately, SSL has become one of the most popular ways to inject malware and mask malicious code, such as Trojan horses and viruses.

Gartner reports that less than 20 percent of organizations with NGFW or IPS appliances decrypt inbound or outbound SSL traffic. Gartner believes that by 2017, more that 50 percent of the network attacks will use encrypted SSL/TLS communications.

Hence, SSL network protocol, is one of those really interesting technologies that were designed to keep us safe on the Internet. Ironically, in doing so, it has completely disrupted the network security industry to a point where our protection and detection equipment have become blind.

Network operators have had to choose between two extremes in confronting these issues. They can take a draconian approach by blocking all SSL communications entirely, or allow SSL communications transparently, without inspection.
