Jun 7, 2019 - Microsoft : Doubling down on sustainability with AI

Climate change is a real and urgent challenge, with recent research showing that global temperatures could increase by 2% by 2030. The impact human activities will have to our environment is set to be unprecedented in the coming decade, hence making this topic all the more important.

In an effort to solve global environmental challenge using cloud and AI, Microsoft in 2017 founded the AI for Earth Program, to help promote the use of technology to build a sustainable future. In fact, a recent study titled “How AI can enable a Sustainable Future” conducted by Microsoft and PWC has shown that using AI for environmental applications has great economic potential as well, capable of boosting global GDP by 3.1 – 4.4% while also reducing global greenhouse gas emissions by around 1.5 – 4.0% by 2030.

The study also found that the sectors that will see the largest positive environmental impact by using AI applications, with energy, transport and agriculture seeing the most reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Jun 7, 2019 - More than 50% of the world's email servers are running EXIM, and may be susceptible to a remote hack

More than half (57% and rising) of the world's email servers are running the EXIM software, which steadily surpassed the stalwarts such as Sendmail (the grandfather of email server software) and Postfix since 2008. Today Sendmail has sunk to a near zero marketshare.

However, as with any software or app, there are always vulnerabilities. Recently, it was discovered that EXIM had a vulnerability that allowed hackers to exploit remotely or in-house, and take control of the server as "root" user (i.e. with ALL privileges). An in-house hacker can exploit EXIM instantly even with a low-privilege account (meaning a normal user account with no admin privileges) (source: https://www.zdnet.com/article/new-rce-vulnerability-impacts-nearly-half-of-the-internets-email-servers/)

Jun 7, 2019 - Building a safer world with Kaspersky: The company unveils new branding and visual identity

The new branding reflects the evolution of our business focus from “cybersecurity” towards the wider concept of “cyber-immunity”. We live in a world where technology connects us across platforms and borders like never before. We are at a cross section where humans and technology are collaborating to improve our lives.

Cybersecurity in today’s world is consequently about more than just protecting devices, but developing an ecosystem where everything connected is protected. Kaspersky’s rebranding marks the company’s commitment to this evolution, and to leading the development of higher industry standards for the future. It also marks the company’s support for the creation of connected systems that are secure-by-design and no longer where security is only an optional add-on layer at the end.

Eugene Kaspersky, CEO, said that today the world has new needs, and our rebranding reflects our vision to meet those needs.
