Just Installed Norton Internet Security 2009

It consists of:
  1. Norton Identity Safe
  2. Norton Antiphishing
  3. Norton Pulse Updates
  4. Norton Insight
  5. Norton Browser Protection
  6. Norton Antivirus
  7. Norton Antispyware
  8. Norton Personal Firewall
I haven't been using Antivirus for some time now. The last time I used one was a trial version of Dr.Web which I think is an amazing software, however, I just can't buy it from Malaysia and even from the web. What a waste!

So, most of the retail stores are either selling Norton and Karspersky. I haven't tried out Karspersky.

Coming back to Norton was nothing more than just buy-it-from-the-shelve.

The first change that I noticed is the availability of CPU meter. This shows great marketing in the software because a few years ago, when Norton was the king, the complains were mostly about Norton being too resource hungry and it slowed down PCs. Now it has a CPU meter to prove to you that it is not really that bad. The lesson that we can learn from here is that think about optimization later, build your software and sell first. And sell with a brand.

The software updates is pretty large (for the first download) and especially large for my limited space hard disk. But that is still ok.

The subscription period is 1 year for RM 100 ++ and this is about standard everywhere.

Come to the features where I decided to turn off everything except for 'Antivirus' and 'Antispyware'. Here are my reasons:
  • Advanced Protection - Since my laptop is more development oriented, this may have some side effects on my development work.
  • Smart firewall - Since my development works involve networking, this may give me more troubles than expected
  • Intrusion prevention - I feel that this is really not needed unless it is a server
  • Email/Message scanning - I prefer to have faster email downloads.
  • Identity safe - I haven't been able to appreciate this feature yet, perhaps later.
  • Antiphishing - I prefer to check out some phishings.

During scanning, the CPU utilization ranges between 20% to 70%++. This is not superbly good but I reckon that this could be a Windows benchmark or this is a good benchmark for asynchronous tasks in software application. When the forking is heaving, it will to higher end and vice versa.
