KL, 18 April 2013 - Oracle releases new updates for business analytics solutions which support big data

It is a big data solution.

Oracle Endeca is not a new product. This latest release covers:
  1. Completely Refreshed End-User Experience.
  2. Enterprise Class Data Discovery.
  3. Business user self-service.

Ideally, it should support automation.

Two features which conventional business analytics solutions lack:
  • Intelligent search.
  • Text enrichment and sentiment analysis - Extract concepts, entities, and meaning from unstructured text fields in databases or other content systems for entirely new types of analysis.

In another words, it is an extension of Business Analytics solution hoping to leverage on the big data trend.

And make no mistake that Oracle has own business analytics solution too even though not market leader; the Oracle Business Intelligence Foundation Suite.

In short, Endeca is really going about competing with SAS Visual Analytics.

MSDN Blog, Apr 16, 2013 - Microsoft Announces General Availability of Windows Azure for IaaS

It emerged that cloud computing industry is splitting into two branches; Linux based and Microsoft based.

The Linux camp is supporting OpenStack; an open framework for cloud platform while Microsoft's Windows Azure hasn't officially supported OpenStack - Windows Azure has always been known as a PaaS instead of IaaS.

IBM SmartCloud, HP Converged Cloud have updated its support for OpenStack recently.

Adoption of Open platform caters for best practices, encourage adoption, enhance interoperability and ensure costs-saving and investment-protection.

It is interesting to see how this trend develop further.

Nonetheless, Microsoft generated excitement by announcement of general availablity of IaaS for Windows Azure; beating all odds.

It means that Windows Azure now supports Virtual Machine and Virtual Network capabilities - it even supports VM templates consist of Linux images.

It was announced that one objective of this strategy is to allow Windows Azure to compete with Amazon Web Services prices for commodity services such as compute, storage and bandwidth.

Reuters, Apr 10, 2013 - PC quarterly sales plummet, sharpest drop on record

Reuters reported that PC sales plunged 14 percent in the first three months of the year, the biggest decline in two decades of keeping records, as tablets continue to gain in popularity and buyers appear to be avoiding Microsoft Corp's new Windows 8 system, according to a leading tech tracking firm.

IDC and Gartner both blamed the sales drop on fading sales of netbooks, the small laptops that have been rendered obsolete by tablets, and more consumer spending going toward smartphones.
