Like I promised in the earlier blog "What is podcast to me?", I would now offer my analysis on Web Services and RSS.
Ok, if you look at blogspot’s site feed features, see the following screen capture.
That is not a Web Service either, it is an XML file generated for my blog using Web Service. This is RSS/XML, which means that Site Feed = RSS = XML File.
How about FeedBurner? What is it all about?
Well, the truth is that FeedBurner is like middle-man, helping you to promote your blog.
In many ways, it is similar to Project Petaling Street where it aggregates blogs’ changes not via the actual link(http://brandonteohno1-it.blogspot.com/web-services-rss.html) but using the Site Feed(XML File). And then based on your Site Feed (as shown above), it provides you with another Site Feed (means another XML file). So, it much more like giving your original site feed a new face on top of existing substance.
Ok, you see, this blog’s originally Site Feed is:
http://brandonteohno1-it.blogspot.com/atom.xml
by registering to FeedBurner, you will get a new Site Feed
http://feeds.feedburner.com/It-Sideways-A-Tech-Blog
They are both referring to the same thing.
It have few intentions:
· Branding. Like Technorati, Project Petaling Street and etc, their intention is to ride on the bandwagon of Blog to create a brand.
· Aggregator. They help your blog to reach out to more people because it is easier for others to find them (feedburner) first than finding your site.
· Advertisement. Once they got their brand up and lots of traffic, they can follow Google’s path into the advertising industry. In fact, they already started.
· Blogsphere. They are part of the blog communities which responsible to make blogging better and more fun.
In exchange, they provide you with the following advantages (This is also my reason of subscribing to it):
1. Site statistic management (Feedburner)
2. Community (Technorati, Feedburner,PPS)
3. Reach awareness. (Technorati, Feedburner, PPS)
4. Tools (Feedburner)
So, where is the Web Services? Is it visible?
Like my earlier blog on “What is podcast to me?”, I did mention that Web Services is the main thing behind all these things. Simply put, Web Services allow applications to talk to each other via the Internet.
If you insist to see it, the Web Services is actually a set of API exposed by BlogSpot. Please refer to the following URL to look at them.
http://www.blogger.com/developers/api/1_docs/
So now Site Feed=RSS=XML=Web Services.
Site Feed = the actual URL for the XML file.
RSS = The concept representing the technology.
XML = The technology enabling the concept.
Web Services = The lower-end technology which works with XML technology.

and since web services uses XML to representing data, there is a connection. don't get confuse by my analogy statement:
Site Feed=RSS=XML=Web Services
All weblogs application are based on Web Services technology.
The one you using right now is not...

Web Services - Low Level Concept
1.Mr.A needs something from Mr.B
2.Mr.B sends XML file to Mr.A using Web services procedure call
3. Mr. A receives a Site Feed.
4. Mr. A display the XML file seamlessly because it is Really Simple Syndication (RSS)
