Juniper Networks Delivers Industry’s First Centralized Network and Security Management for Routing, Switching and Security

Network access control (NAC) has been one of the most hyped networking technologies in recent years. But that's changing, according to Juniper Networks. The networking vendor says that NAC is well beyond the hype phase, and is actively solving enterprise access control needs.

The networking and security vendor announced the next generation of its comprehensive standards-based Unified Access Control (UAC 2.2 software) framework and new hardware -- the Infranet controller IC 4500 and 6500 hardened, centralized policy management servers; along with its Network and Security Manager (NSM) – which together, provide centralized access policy management with best-in-class scalability and performance.

The new NSM offers centralised management for Juniper Networks J-series services routers, EX-series Ethernet switches, Secure Access SSL VPN and firewall/VPN and Intrusion Detection and Prevention appliances, and for the newly announced Unified Access Control (UAC) solution; enabling high-performance businesses to consolidate and simplify the management of their network infrastructure to increase security, reduce cost and realise operational gains. The new UAC 2.2 software release enables businesses to simplify rollout, deployment and provisioning of secure network access and attain comprehensive network visibility with broad enforcement capabilities across the most diverse and complex environments—a significant advance in network access control (NAC).

The new UAC 2.2 release will also be the first from Juniper to support Microsoft's Network Access Protection. It's all part of Juniper's larger effort to develop a comprehensive end-to-end security framework that competes effectively with rival Cisco's Self Defending Network strategy.

Press Release:

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, August 8, 2008 – Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced the expansion of its network and security management capabilities with the Juniper Networks Network and Security Manager (NSM) to deliver unified management functions across Juniper routing, switching and security network infrastructure. The new NSM now offers centralized management for Juniper Networks J-series services routers, EX-series Ethernet switches, Secure Access SSL VPN and firewall/VPN and Intrusion Detection and Prevention appliances, and today’s newly announced Unified Access Control (UAC) solution (see today’s related announcement). NSM enables high-performance businesses to consolidate and simplify the management of their network infrastructure to increase security, reduce cost and realize operational gains.

“IT organizations supporting high-performance businesses are under continuous pressure to provide lower cost of ownership, improve management efficiency and more effectively leverage their network and security investment,” said Jon Oltsik, senior Analyst, Information Security
Enterprise Strategy Group. “Network administrators need a cost-effective, comprehensive solution that can easily and effectively manage the evolving network and security infrastructure with centralized management rather than using multiple management tools to control each device on the network.”

“Since our network is critical to our success we require a fast, reliable and secure high-performance infrastructure to support our growing operations,” said Glen Hudler, Information Officer of International Finance Corporation, Member of the World Bank Group. “The Juniper Networks NSM delivers enhanced functions in a single application to manage our Juniper products, allowing us to significantly improve responsiveness to threats while simultaneously reducing operational costs and maintaining investment protection without compromises in performance and functionality.”

Centralized Management Delivers Operational Efficiency, Scalability and Security

Juniper Networks NSM, the industry’s most comprehensive, secure centralized device and policy management, provides unparalleled capability for device and security policy configuration, comprehensive monitoring, reporting tools, and tools for investigating potential security threats in the network - all from a single user interface. NSM enables large scale deployments and the ability to do global policy enforcement via a hierarchical distribution of the Juniper Networks NSMXpress and the NSM Central Manager. In addition to centralized management for Juniper J-series services routers, EX-series Ethernet switches, Secure Access SSL VPN and firewall/VPN and Intrusion Detection and Prevention appliances, and UAC solution, new features and benefits include:
  • Consistent monitoring across Juniper network and security products
  • Implementation of policy changes network-wide to mitigate threats
  • Policy versioning with rollback capabilities
  • Efficient network-wide control with centralized management
  • Schema-based management architecture for extensibility
  • Role-based administration

Creating a Responsive and Trusted Security Environment

The latest NSM capabilities enable innovative businesses to also centrally manage their comprehensive Juniper Adaptive Threat Management and Access Control Solutions. Juniper Networks Adaptive Threat Management Solution is a dynamic and high-performance security solution that leverages interoperability between security components to provide network-wide visibility and control in order to adapt to changing risks. Juniper Networks Access Control Solution delivers a comprehensive network access control (NAC) security solution that protects vital network resources and applications by provisioning secure local access across the distributed enterprise.

“Juniper is committed to delivering fast, reliable and secure high-performance network and security solutions that provide operational efficiency so that customers can concentrate on their business objectives instead of their network,” said Matt Kolon, Asia Pacific CTO for Juniper Networks. “With our latest capabilities in NSM, device technicians, network administrators, and security administrators can now work together to improve management efficiency and security, reduce overhead, and lower operating costs.”

The new Juniper Networks Network and Security Manager (NSM) 2008.1 is available today. For more information about Juniper’s management software for secure, high-performance networking, please visit Juniper Networks Management Software Product and Services.
