Telecom NZ International Increases Global Internet Telephony Footprint with Juniper Networks Switching Technology

Juniper Networks®  announced the first phase of a project to upgrade Telecom New Zealand International’s (TNZI) global network and increase the number of international points of presence (POPs). By deploying Juniper Networks EX Series Ethernet Switches, the upgrade extends TNZI’s global footprint in the delivery of internet telephony and increases the number of call minutes the telecommunications provider can carry and trade.

TNZI is a global internet telephony provider and trades with over 200 voice customers and vendors worldwide, carrying around two percent of all global voice traffic or nearly five billion minutes per year. Its legacy network didn’t allow TNZI to cost-effectively expand into new geographies, limiting the scale of the network and the company’s growth potential.



The company’s new network, which deploys Juniper’s Virtual Chassis fabric technology on the EX4200 Ethernet Switches, eliminates complexity and allows TNZI to cost-effectively expand capacity and geographic reach as its business grows. Juniper was selected for its value, strength of service and support, and the benefits provided by the single-source Junos® operating system. TNZI already uses Juniper Networks M Series Multiservice Edge Routers running the Junos OS in other areas of its network, making the EX4200 switches easy and seamless to integrate into the network operations center and existing management and reporting systems.



“In the global internet telephony market, the more points of presence you have, the better your ability to compete,” said Anthony Briscoe, General Manager, TNZI. “For us to grow our business by increasing the number of minutes we carry, we needed to expand our footprint. Juniper Networks provided the most robust, scalable, secure and cost-effective infrastructure for us to be able to do just that.”



Juniper Networks was also an attractive option for TNZI because of the security and common management attributes of its products, as well as the Virtual Chassis technology, which enables up to 10 interconnected EX4200 switches to operate as a single logical device. With Virtual Chassis technology, TNZI can expand their network and support incremental growth without requiring large upfront investments or overwhelming complexity. With Virtual Chassis fabric technology, Juniper delivers a highly scalable solution that boosts TNZI’s network performance and can lower total cost of ownership.

The first EX Series-based POP is now live in London, while planning for the next few sites is underway. The success and ease of the first live deployment, combined with reduced per-port costs, has prompted TNZI to use Juniper’s EX Series switches to replace legacy equipment at some of its existing POPs. This will further lower operational costs at each site while providing increased functionality and reliability.
