The Malaysian Research and Education Network (MYREN) - which provides high-capacity broadband to universities, colleges, research organisations and scientific laboratories, has migrated its Phase 2A network infrastructure to a robust Juniper Networks routing solution running the Junos operating system, to scale capacity with increased reliability and pave the way for the expansion of its user base, including more public and private-sector universities, hospitals, polytechnics and community colleges.
Launched in 2005 and funded by Malaysia's federal government, MYREN currently links 68 academic research institutions throughout Malaysia and is linked to national research and education networks in Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. After five years of successful first phase operations, advanced data-intensive applications are driving demand for greater bandwidth across the network, and for advanced networking technologies such as IPv6 and virtualization. MYREN is administered by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and connectivity is centralized at a Network Operation Centre in Cyberjaya. Researchers are running data-intensive applications such as video conferencing, digital video transport system (DVTS), data computing, visualization/image modeling and e-learning.
Deployment of Juniper Networks M7i Multiservice Edge Routers at MYREN’s backbone network’s five points of presence in west and east Malaysia and at MYREN's peering point, has enabled migration to high-speed backbone links of up to 1Gbps. The M7i's separate hardware-based routing and forwarding engines drive a high-performance distribution layer MPLS network architecture, with Juniper Networks J6350 Service Routers acting as the provider edge at MYREN-connected campuses. As access links are dictated by MYREN's end users, the J6350 has to handle a variety of L2 and L3 connections, with physical media ranging from optical fibre to microwave transmission.
With the advanced Junos operating system running across the entire infrastructure, network administrators are much better positioned to respond dynamically to the bandwidth and network security requirements of researchers and academics across the extended network.
