Using Cacoo for online diagrams and collaboration

Cacoo is a web-based diagram drawing and collaboration tool.

Besides drawing diagrams, the two most important features are 1.) the ability to share diagrams on the web and 2.) collaboration.

Without these collaboration and publishing features, it may make more sense to draw diagram using Microsoft Paint, save it and then email it out.

Therefore, using Cacoo, everybody can capitalise on the availability of free account which offers the feature to create diagrams and then be exported as high resolution PNG file. Just purge out old diagrams to allow for new ones to be created. And when you feel like getting more features for collaboration, just subscribe to the plans.

Let's try to emulate a diagram similar to this diagram using Cacoo.

Cacoo Dashboard and the resulted diagram

It is many times much better than attempting to use Microsoft Paint to create diagrams due to availability of existing free stencils. For those of you who do not know it, Microsoft Paint is more like a tool for free-hand diagram drawing while tools like Cacoo are meant for assisted diagram drawing. Besides having stencils, it also comes with assisted alignment feature which arrangements, such as aligning and distributing evenly, are all available.

A drawing can be expanded into multiple sheets for better management of related diagrams. More importantly, editing history is available for each drawing.

It also comes with undo function during draw-mode and the ability to create shadows for objects.

The one feature I like best is its ability to allow a single line to have curve at multiple points along the line - by double-click on the line.

Students and teachers can use Cacoo for free until June 30, 2013 via the Cacoo Academic Plan.

Cacoo Store

Cacoo Store is a platform where users can publish and sell their own stencils and templates to be used on Cacoo. The first 50 items in the Store includes AWS stencils and other great icon sets.

The introduction of the Cacoo Store is a major evolution of Cacoo’s diagram creation platform. Previously, users were limited to only items developed by Cacoo. With the Cacoo Store, the inventory of stencils and templates will expand significantly as users can buy and sell stencils and templates with other Cacoo users around the world. This means that users can now draw more expressive diagrams, and customise them to a much greater degree.

In the event that users are unable to find the stencils or templates that they desire, they are free to create new ones and publish them on the Cacoo Store. The items can be listed for free or with a little fee. By listing on the Cacoo Store, a user’s artwork will be able to reach about 200,000 other Cacoo users around the world.

In short, use Cacoo to draw diagrams online and share it out or collaborate with others at affordable price even for team-based subscription.
