Building Strategic Career in Software Testing

The Malaysian Software Testing Hub (MSTH) is an initiative by Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister's Department and the Malaysian Software Testing Board (MSTB) as part of the effort to establish Malaysia as global player in the lucrative software testing market.

As part of MSTH communications programme, MSTB is organising a series of events and career talks in major cities to promote awareness on software testing and MSTH programmes over the next few months, and Penang is the first stop;over the weekend (May 18 and 19).

Malaysian Software Testing Board (MSTB) is a voluntary and non-profit organization that represents the national industry interests and promotes the broad profession of software testing.
Puan Mastura Abu Samah, President, MSTB

It promotes software testing certifications by International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) who is also a not-for-profit association.

Hence, the upcoming roadshows by the MSTH initiative targets students as an effort to provide students with more career opportunity options in the software industry. “The purpose of this talk is to share with students, particularly those in the software engineering field of studies, the career opportunities and prospects available in the software testing discipline," says President of MSTB, Puan Mastura Abu Samah.

Currently, Malaysia has more than 2,000 ISTQB certified testers and the target is to have 10,000 by the end of 10th Malaysia Plan (2015). Malaysian universities are anticipated to contribute a large portion of the number.

Certification has always been part of the computer & IT industry. Most of the time, holders of certifications are able to exert a greater career influence over their peers.

Nonetheless, certification in terms of software testing is something quite new. It wasn't popular during my days in college about 11 years ago and during those days most of us devised our own techniques and theories in terms of software testing.

Same goes for certifications of Enterprise Architecture which are currently being championed by IASA - all these are relatively new kids on the block.

The biggest IT certifications in market today are mostly vendor's driven; such as the prestigious Cisco Certified Network Engineer certification better known as the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certification. During my college days, Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) certification was also very popular.

My personal take is that all these are good for the industry, especially for the people. In fact, I feel that all companies should send their software team to attend such trainings and obtain certifications.
