In the last updates series (week 1 of Apr 2013), the most interesting update was that Intel released SDK for OpenCL Applications 2013 supporting the OpenCL 1.2 standard on 3rd and future 4th generation Intel® Core™ processors.

Tata Communications is the main sponsor of the first simultaneous hackathon event linking together Silicon Valley and Bangalore (July 12th-13th 2013). During the two day hackfest, over 200 developers in both locations will work together, across borders, to innovate next-generation ‘open-standard’ collaboration tools. Reuters, Jun 19, 2013 - Microsoft offers rewards for hacking tools and talents

Reuters reported that Microsoft has unveiled a program to recruit talents in computer security.

Bounties start at $50,000 for tools that enable attackers to break into computers, even when they are protected by up-to-date security software.

Microsoft is also running a one-month contest, starting July 26, offering bounties of up to $11,000 to hackers who find bugs in the trial version of its new Internet Explorer 11 browser, which will be in preview release.

Oracle Corporation unveils the availability of Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 7 (Java EE 7) and the Java EE 7 Software Development Kit (SDK) to support HTML 5 and further increase developer productivity.

The new Java EE 7 features a scalable infrastructure that facilitates building HTML5 applications by reducing response times through low-latency, bi-directional communication with WebSockets. It simplifies data parsing and exchange and at the same time it can support many more users concurrently.

REDMOND, Wash.- May 29, 2013 - 305 young innovators advance to Microsoft Imagine Cup Worldwide Finals

Imagine Cup is part of the Microsoft YouthSpark initiative to create opportunities for millions of young people around the world.

86 teams that will travel to St. Petersburg, Russia, in July to compete in the 11th annual Imagine Cup Worldwide Finals in pursuit of $1,000,000 in cash prizes and other awards.

Competitions are evaluated on the premise of developing applications based on Microsoft technology aligned to three key focus areas: Innovation, World Citizenship and Games.

For example, Team Colinked from the University of Exeter will represent the United Kingdom at the Imagine Cup Worldwide Finals this year in the Innovation Competition, a new category created to celebrate the wider world of student innovations. The team created an app called soundSYNK that uses Bluetooth technology to link an unlimited number of Windows Phones and streams the same song on all of them in perfect timing, effectively creating a symphony of speakers.

Sophos - May 29, 2013 - Lambda Labs to release Face recognition API for Google Glass

During the last Google I/O 2013 held in San Francisco early of May 2013, Google Glass was made available as explorer edition for selected people.

Shortly after that, Google announced that face recognition technology will not be made available for Google Glass due to concern with security reasons:without proper policy and control, one with Google Glass would be able to identify non-friends by just walking down the streets.

Nonetheless, a San Francisco startup saw this as an opportunity.

The API is now seeing 5 million calls per month and is growing at 15 percent month-over-month, Perez writes, with Lambda Labs now on the brink of releasing a version of the API that will recognize faces and objects in Google Glass apps.

The API is made available via Mashape:The Cloud API Hub which is a marketplace for cloud based API.

PHOENIX, May 17, 2013 – Romanian Teenager Wins Big for Low-Cost, Self-Driving Car Innovation

Ionut Budisteanu, 19, of Romania was awarded first place for using artificial intelligence to create a viable model for a low-cost, self-driving car at this year's Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public.

With 3-D radar and mounted cameras, Ionut created a feasible design for an autonomously controlled car that could detect traffic lanes and curbs, along with the real-time position of the car – and it would only cost $4,000. He received the Gordon E. Moore Award of $75,000, named in honor of the Intel co-founder and fellow scientist.

This year, approximately 1,600 young scientists were chosen to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. They were selected from 433 affiliate fairs in more than 70 countries, regions and territories. In addition to the winners mentioned above, more than 500 finalists received awards and prizes for their innovative research. Awards included 17 "Best of Category" winners who each received a $5,000 prize. The Intel Foundation also awarded a $1,000 grant to each winner's school and to the affiliated fair they represent.

Intel, May 8, 2013 - Intel Releases SDK with OpenCL* 1.2 Support for Intel® Xeon Phi™ Coprocessors

Intel has announced the production release of the Intel® SDK for Open CL* Applications XE 2013 that launched as a beta program in December. The new SDK broadens options for developers on Intel® architecture and includes tools, optimization guides and training. The SDK helps OpenCL developers improve performance and efficiency on Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessors and Intel® Xeon® processors as well as create highly parallel applications for high performance computing workstations, data analytics and other uses.
