Ovum - London - Aug 1, 2014 - Myanmar’s under-developed telecoms market is set to become the world’s fastest-growing

Myanmar, the world’s largest country with a mobile-operator monopoly, will this month launch its first privately-owned mobile network. The entry of private player Ooredoo will see a rapid growth in mobile subscriptions and revenue in the country. According to Ovum’s latest research, Myanmar’s mobile subscriptions will grow at 29.3% CAGR to 32.3 million at end-2019. Mobile revenue will grow at a similarly rapid rate as a result of the new competition. Ovum forecasts that this will reach $1.2bn in 2019, up from $691m in 2013.


Ooredoo mobile SIM cards were soft-launched at retail shops this week, while the operator is expected to make an official announcement about the launch this weekend. At launch, Ooredoo Myanmar will be offering 3G+ services, which include both voice and mobile broadband, in urban areas around Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, and Yangon.

Hitachi Sunway made the following announcements during the press conference today morning.

i) Two major acquisitions in Malaysia – FREENET Business Solutions Sdn Bhd and Powerware Systems Sdn Bhd
  • Instantly gains two (2) ISO-certified data centres in a total of 18,500 sq. ft which located at Cyberjaya and Kuala Lumpur
  • Strategic investments in in accelerating to leadership position for data centre solutions and services in Malaysia and SEA
ii) Building of its third data centre in Klang Valley located at The Pinnacle Sunway
  • Invest KL and Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) is in close support and revealing that the latest build of data centre is an exemplary of the kind of strategic foreign investments that is sought after to boost Malaysia’s ICT sector
  • New data centre will handle the demands of more from local corporations, which want to outsource their IT and call centre operations, yet at the same time prefer their data to be residing closer to them
Cheah highlighted that the data centre investments is aligning with the local government’s drive towards greater developments for the country to be SEA’s preferred data centre hub. Last year, Malaysia has seen its economic revenue from the data centre market grew by over RM500 million, up by 25 percent.

He also added Hitachi Sunway, a joint-venture between Japan and Malaysian, has been growing steadily with a significant increase in revenue of over 50 percent in the past 12 months. Especially Infrastructure and Managed Services(IMS), which is one of the three core business divisions of Hitachi Sunway, has recorded more than 100 percent growth in revenue. This will continue to be fuelled by the force of the new acquisitions.

AirAsia is the first airline in Asia Pacific to implement light ticketing technology from Amadeus, which gives travel agencies an even simpler way to book the airline’s content.

For the first time, traditional shopping, booking and back-office flows will be combined with real-time dynamic fares provided through AirAsia’s XML connection with Amadeus. The new AirAsia booking process with Amadeus is up to five times faster than booking outside of the GDS.

PR - Malaysia - Jul 31, 2014 - AkzoNobel to collaborate with SERIS on solar cell technology

AkzoNobel has partnered with the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) at the National University of Singapore in order to explore less costly ways of producing high-efficiency silicon wafer solar cells.

The company’s High Purity Metalorganics (HPMO) business is a leading supplier of electronic materials to the semiconductor and solar industries. Together with SERIS, they will now investigate how to respond to the photovoltaic industry’s desire to reduce the costs involved in moving towards more efficient cell architectures.

The collaboration has been prompted by the growing expectation that the photovoltaic industry will move towards higher efficiency silicon wafer solar cell architectures.

The new precursors should offer an attractive alternative to the current commercially available metalorganics, which are designed for applications other than high-efficiency silicon wafer solar cells.

AkzoNobel’s HPMO products are used in a wide range of industrial and consumer products, including lasers, solar cells, LEDs and mobile phones.
