PR - Jul 3, 2015 - Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus students make it to the World Finals of Imagine Cup!

Four Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus students have made it for the World Finals of Microsoft’s Imagine Cup, to be held in Seattle, Washington from 27 to 31 July 2015. Imagine Cup is Microsoft’s global student technology program and competition which allows students across all disciplines to use their creativity, passion and knowledge of technology to create applications, games, and integrates solutions that can change the way we live, work, and play.

Participants of Imagine Cup celebrate after the conclusion of the National Finals. Swinburne Sarawak Team also won MCMC’s Imagine Cup National Final category winner cash prize, pictured with John Tay, Director, Digital Lifestyle and Society, MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission)

The talented foursome – Landon Chia, Stella Wang, Sim Jia Ying and John Hii – formed team “SwinDesign” and created a horror role playing game called “Tou: The Sacrifice”, which won them the seat in the Games category for the World Finals. Inspired by folklore and rituals of the Melanau tribe in Sarawak, the game allows players to navigate and search for clues, solving puzzles to proceed to the further levels. Players of Tou: The Sacrifice will primarily move around scenes in 2D Parallax, creating an illusion of depth in a 2D scene; while in selected environments, players will experience a 3D environment, creating a gyroscopic effect.

PR - Jul 2, 2015 - CORVALLIS, Ore. - Tough tail of a seahorse may provide robotic solutions

One of the ocean’s oddest little creatures, the seahorse, is providing inspiration for robotics researchers as they learn from nature how to build robots that have capabilities sometimes at odds with one another – flexible, but also tough and strong.

Their findings, published today in the journal Science, outline the virtues of the seahorse’s unusual skeletal structure, including a tail in which a vertebral column is surrounded by square bony plates. These systems may soon help create technology that offers new approaches to surgery, search and rescue missions or industrial applications.

Such applications, he said, might include laparoscopic surgery, in which a robotic device could offer enhanced control and flexibility as it enters a body, moves around organs and bones, and then has the strength to accomplish a surgical task. It could find uses in industrial system, search and rescue robots, or anything that needs to be both resilient and flexible.

PR - Jul 2, 2015 - 11street Reveals Online Search for Baby Car Seats Spike as Balik kampung Exodus Approaches

11street (www.11street.my), one of the largest online marketplaces in Malaysia, recently analysed trending products on their website last week which interestingly reveals that:
  • 81 percent increase in online search for baby car seat increased as Ramadhan begins – showing a positive sign of rising awareness of child passenger safety across country. The trend among parents surfing on 11street goes in line with the recent urge expressed by Malaysian Consumers Association to enforce car seats for carrying infants and children in vehicles.
  • Search for Bluetooth earphones rose two fold (more than 200 percent) as hands-free devices should be a priority as well since it enables drivers to make calls safely with minimal disruption.
  • Data also shown that with the upcoming festivities, other indispensable items such as powerbanks and travel bags have gained in popularity. This indicates that Malaysians are already starting to prepare for Raya to ensure that they can enjoy endless entrainment on the go and easily carry their belongings for their ‘balik kampung’ journey.
