Schroders - Jun 9, 2016 - Euro 2016: Where are the best equity opportunities among the tournament favourites?

by Martin Skanberg, Fund Manager, European Equities; Nicholette MacDonald-Brown, Fund Manager, European Equities

With the Euro 2016 football tournament about to get under way, we assess the investment opportunities offered by some of the main contenders.

As investors in European equities, our focus is on stock-specific opportunities. We are agnostic as to where a company is based; what is important for us is finding individual stocks that have been mispriced by the market. The macroeconomic environment is something we take into account, but it is possible to find interesting stock-level opportunities almost anywhere. Europe is an open economy and the kinds of companies we invest in often have operations not just in their home market but across the continent and the rest of the world too.

PR - Jun 7, 2016 - Cloud is critical to digital transformation in the APAC financial sector but lack of regulatory understanding a key hurdle

Financial services institutions (FSI) across the Asia Pacific region are under immense pressure to increase agility, improve efficiency, and embrace digital transformation, according to a study by Forrester Consulting. However too many organizations in the sector still lack thorough understanding of cloud-related banking regulations in order to completely embrace and take advantage of cloud computing.

The study commissioned by Microsoft, ‘Cloud is Critical to Digital Transformation in the Asia Pacific Financial Sector’, evaluated cloud adoption trends among FSI in Asia Pacific and gauged their knowledge and perceptions of cloud-related financial regulations. It analyzed the impact of regulatory compliance, security and privacy, and reliability concerns on current and future cloud initiatives.

According to the study, in order to thrive, FSI in Asia Pacific will (and must) increasingly embrace cloud computing — both public and hybrid -- and must therefore understand cloud-related banking regulations, formalize internal cloud policies, and implement best practices for engaging with cloud providers and banking regulators.”

One key finding from the study was that leading FSI in the region are actually using regulations to help steer public cloud initiatives, and not as an excuse to stop them. The better the firms’ understanding of regulations, the more likely they are to embrace public cloud services. In most instances, these initiatives are directly tied to customer-facing, digital banking capabilities like new customer acquisition and on-boarding.

PR - Jun 7, 2016 - Shape Your Laser Beam into a Ring Profile

Laser beams with a ring-shaped profile are required in ophthalmology, laser welding, and the material ablation of thin films.

The ring profile must be produced. Often, classic axicons are used for this purpose: conical lenses and rotation-symmetrical prisms. These elements convert a laser beam with a Gaussian profile into a Bessel beam. Axicons are very difficult to produce for very large or very small fan angles, an optimal ring profile generally cannot be achieved.

LASER COMPONENTS now introduces Holo/OR diffractive optics with an axicon structure. The advantages are immense: Irrespective of the fan angle, the ring profile is always perfect because the beam profile is produced using a grating.

PR - Jun 3, 2016 - New research from Kaspersky Lab reveals kids are addicted to online friendships

Peer pressure is having a big impact on how children communicate with each other, making them more dependent on staying connected to the Internet, according to new research carried out by Kaspersky Lab and iconKids & Youth. Parents provide their kids with connected devices to help them maintain contacts with their friends, and children themselves claim that they use these devices because their friends do so.

The Connected Kids survey found that over half of parents (52%) provide their children with mobile devices so that they can communicate with their peers. The research also revealed that one in four (27%) parents provide their children with connected devices because of concerns that their child would be treated as an outsider without them.

Kids are increasingly using connected devices as an essential means of communicating with their friends and peer pressure is playing a role in pushing modern friendships online. 44% of young people say they use a connected device because their friends do and one third of kids (32%) keep in touch with their friends more often online than offline.
