The Special Olympics Malaysia (SOM) is the Malaysian chapter of the Special Olympics non-profit organization based in the USA.
The core activity of the non-profit organization is to provide people with intellectual disabilities with training for competitive sports - its vision is to make the world a better place through community inclusion where every single person is not discriminated regardless of ability or disability.
The Special Olympics world event is a bi-annual event which consists of both summer games and winter games - the next summer games will be held in Abu Dhabi in 2019.
Special Olympics Malaysia plans to send a delegation of 52 athletes and coaches to compete in the world summer games and they are currently in fund-raising mode.
The funding requirement per athlete is approximately RM 20,000, which includes the costs of coaches and support staff - hence, SOM needs to raise RM 500,0000 to bring the 52 athletes to Abu Dhabi for summer games in 2019.
The official sports for Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 are Aquatics, Athletics, Bocce, Bowling, Football, Equestrian and Golf.
To raise awareness for the fund raising, a musical Gala dinner will by organized with the theme of 'Music is the Universal Language of Love' which it will feature University Malaysia Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Prof. Dr. Mohd Nasi Hashim as well as special performances from Zamil Idris and Juwita Suwito, to be held on 21-Apr-2017 (Sat) at Dewan Tunky Canselor, University of Malaya.
The target audience includes businesses and corporations who wish to consider Corporate Social Responsibility.
The Gala dinner will be graced by the Royal Presence of DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan and DYMM Raja Permaisuri Perak Darul Ridzuan.
