Windows XP Blue Screen: Try Changing Video Adapters

Have you ever been locked down to a situation where your Windows (Microsoft) suddenly flashes you with a blue screen that tells "Try changing the video adapters"?

It could look like this...

Yeah, the video card is probably spoiled.

If you want to double confirm... restart in 'Safe Mode'..

Notice that it will stop at the video card driver, which is 'agp440.sys' for this case.

The truth is ...

  1. The video card is probably spoiled or damaged, you have to replace it.
  2. Windows is DEFINITELY corrupted as a side-effect too, you would need to reinstall again. You may not want to replace the video card immediately, but you have to reinstall Windows, either to another partition or to existing partition.
  3. Repairing Windows could work, but may inherit problems.

Malaysian Blogger Fined With RM 2 Million

Raja Petra Kamaruddin was fined with RM 2 million over libellous blogs posted on controversial political blog called Malaysia Today.

Malaysia Today is really the place for you to open up your "innocent" eyes about politics in Malaysia. It could be real facts, gossips and etc, just exercise your discretions.

But this is the first time in history that a Malaysian blogger is fined with such hefty amount, following somewhat recent precedental pattern which prominent blogger Mr. Jeff Ooi was elected as member of the parliment for Malaysia in the recent general election.

Do not ignore the power of blogs. It just matters!

Corporations Gain Insights with Analytics and Consumers Benefit

The use of Business Intelligence and analytics are surging in Corporate Malaysia to gain significant, daily insights that benefit consumers.

More about SAS.

Press Release:

KUALA LUMPUR, 26 MARCH 2008 – Word has is that SAS may have been the ‘unsung hero’ in the revelation of the New York Governor Elliot Spitzer prostitution scandal; with a specific reference to the SAS Anti-Money Laundering software that is used to monitor financial transactions – whereby in Spitzer's case, were several suspicious large withdrawals and records of payments made to a shell company.

Whilst this high-profile case illustrates the integral relationship between business technology and its impact on the events within the (public) masses, SAS Malaysia says starting 2008, analytics has been singled out as the factor behind the gaining of key insights – regardless whether in the public, commercial and social area context.

Allan Tham, SAS Malaysia’s Head of Enterprise Information Platform (EIP) Practice shares that the use of analytics is everywhere and is making significant changes to people’s lives.

For example, Absa Bank in South Africa was able to use analytics to protect their customers investments. Banks are able to identify characteristics of branches most likely to get robbed and modify its security measures. “Recorded results show that the number of armed robberies declined 41 percent in two years, with a 38 percent reduction in cash loss.”

“Furthermore analytics is able to assist banks like HSBC to pinpoint abbreviations in regular transactions and detect credit card fraud even before the transaction is completed. Each verification call that users get prior to an ‘unusual’ transaction ensures their interest are safeguarded. This helps the banks improve operational efficiency and fraud protection for their customers.” says Tham.

Closer back home, analytics has enabled Insurance Services Malaysia Berhad (ISM) to set up a world-class fraud management detection system via specific data mining techniques.

“At the end of the day, it’s the consumer that benefits from these customized reports that assist them to strategize for more competitive insurance product pricing, explains Carl Rajendram, Chief Executive Officer of Insurance Services Malaysia Berhad (ISM).

Analytics Everywhere

Insights gained from analytics are being used by corporations everywhere in virtually every industry to remain competitive and to stay relevant to their customers. The impact goes beyond just benefits for these organizations but the people and consumers whom these organizations serve. The examples are myriad.

  • In the retail industry, retailers like Parkson Malaysia uses information gained from analytics to tailor their campaign mailers to the consumers, The result is more relevant products being offered to the right pool of customers and a 40 percent increase in mailer response rate for the retailer .
  • Another retailer, Harris Teeter sends customized e-mails to its customers highlighting their typical buys and whether the items are on sale that week. Regular shoppers are rewarded with specialty store special discounts specific to their favourite items.
  • Kohl plans allocates merchandise at its stores based on the size and colours demanded by consumers shopping in that store. Analytics reveals distinct differences between stores, even within the same region.
  • Victoria’s Secret sends a special fragrance direct mailer to some 100,000 customers who are spending 3-5 times more by going through the channels of retail stores, Internet and catalogs. All through applying analytics.
  • Even online companies like are able to instantly give "you may also like" recommendations to users based on their search/purchase – providing a percentage of customers that bought the item, and sending weekly emails to members on deals on previously searched items, via analytics.
  • Loan approval processing just got faster with analytics. The Laurentian Bank in Montreal was able to quicken its automatic loan approvals for their customers and reduce its losses by 8 percent on newly acquired loans.
  • Media companies such as newspapers also use analytics on their readers to develop new products, increase overall circulation and maximize advertising revenues, and focus on the preferences of its readers. The customer intelligence generated by analytics helps savvy newspapers attract advertisers who are willing to pay a premium for widespread exposure in publications that reach readers who are ready to buy.
  • The North Caroline State University’s Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences relied on analytics to spot a crucial trend in 100 years’ worth of weather data to predict an accurate season instance in 2006. As a result, government, local officials and homeowners were able to be better prepared.

SAS Enterprise Intelligence Platform (EIP) 9.2: Analytics at the next level

Although there is growing awareness that analytics is everywhere and playing a significant role in daily lives, it is still ambiguous to many.

“Analytics is undergoing an evolution today. Real analytics is no longer just about the churning out of standard reports that summarizes to you the story behind a heap of data.”

Tham says that analytics today is about being able to take a deep look at an enormous data, and derive intelligence ie. predictive information from it and use that information to make good decisions in the business and social worlds. Simply put, analytics is based on a very powerful engine that performs data collaboration, data management and data visualization,” says Tham, who also shares on the launch of the SAS Enterprise Intelligence Platform (EIP) 9.2, moving up from the company’s version 9.0.

“SAS 9.2 is revolutionary and evolutionary,”ends Tham. “Organizations using analytics will appreciate SAS’ unrelenting focus on innovation and meeting customer needs. SAS 9.2 is non-disruptive innovation. It helps companies gather and analyze data and share intelligence for quicker, more accurate business decisions.” “

Press Release:

Free Online Software Brings Photoshop Technology to Anyone Taking Digital Photos

Adobe Systems Incorporated announced Adobe® Photoshop® Express public beta, a free Rich Internet Application (RIA) available to anyone who wants to store, sort and show off digital photos with eye-catching effects.

During the public beta period, Adobe will solicit Photoshop Express user feedback on product features and functionality, which will continue to evolve over time. As the newest addition to the Photoshop family line, Photoshop Express has taken much of Adobe’s best image editing technology and made it simple and accessible to a new online audience. Photoshop Express allows users to store up to 2 gigabytes of images online for free, make edits to their photos, and share them online in creative ways, including downloading and uploading photos from popular social networking sites like Facebook.

"Photoshop is trusted technology that has changed the visual landscape of our world. Now, Photoshop Express allows anyone who snaps a digital photo to easily achieve the high-impact results for which Adobe is known," said Doug Mack, vice president of Consumer and Hosted Solutions at Adobe. “Photoshop Express is a convenient, single destination where you can store, edit and share photos whether you’re at home, school or on the road.”

Simple, Fun and Accessible

With Photoshop Express, digital photos can be uploaded and sorted anytime, edited non-destructively to always preserve the original image, and shared from anywhere, on any Web browser. In a few easy clicks, Photoshop Express empowers anyone to make standard edits, such as removing blemishes and red-eye, converting to black and white, cropping and resizing, and much more.

No experience is required to add special effects that will impress friends and family. In keeping with its one-click approach, Photoshop Express offers tricks like Pop Color which selects an object in an image, mutes the background color of the photo and allows the user to swap the object’s color so it jumps off the page. Sketch effects help photos look like drawings and the Distort feature allows you to distort facial features or objects within the images for a comical or artistic effect. Even users with limited photo editing knowledge can simply select what looks best from a line-up of sample photos with visual hints showing different variations of the added effect.

Photoshop Express offers a variety of creative sharing options, including uploading and showing off photos and slideshows in your own online “Gallery” hosted by Adobe, or conveniently embedding or linking photos to social networking sites and personal blogs without having to leave the application. Slideshows never looked better with animation that makes photos float and fly across the screen, allowing for viewer interactivity and unique presentation styles.

Adobe Photoshop Family

Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended are at the heart of the Photoshop family, joined by solutions for users at every level who want to bring out the best in their digital images. Photoshop Lightroom™ addresses the workflow needs of professional and serious amateur photographers. Photoshop Elements provides exciting tools and sharing options for photo hobbyists.

Photoshop Express is the latest step Adobe is taking to leverage the advanced technology that underpins its award-winning creative products and deliver it to new online communities. In early 2007, Adobe also announced the availability of Adobe® Premiere® Express, an online video editing and mash-up tool on partner sites such as MTV and Photobucket. Adobe Premiere Express leverages the functionality found in Premiere Elements, a fully-featured desktop video editing program.

Free and Available Now

Adobe Photoshop Express beta is available now for free via any Web browser at Photoshop Express was created with Flex, Adobe’s free, open source framework for building RIAs. Flex applications provide a consistent, rich user experience across operating systems and all major browsers, including Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and others. An Internet connection and an up-to-date Flash® Player 9 are all that are required to experience Adobe Photoshop Express. In its early phases, Photoshop Express is available to US residents-only in English. Users may experience slow performance if accessed outside of the US. Recurring Algssl.exe Problems ?

How to Remove It Manually?
  1. The first thing you have to do is to terminate the process of algssl.exe using "Task Manager". This is very important. Otherwise, the process of algssl.exe will cause interruption to the following steps, especially step 3.
  2. The second thing that you need to do is to get rid of the autorun.inf file in C drive and all other drives. To do this, the most effective way is through this video.
  3. Then, proceed to fix the viewing hidden files problem. This has to be done via regedit.
Click Start/Run,type regedit then press Ok
Navigate to the following registry key:

Now right click on,and delete the value "CheckedValue" in the right
      hand window.

Now create a new "DWORD Value" called exactly "CheckedValue" in the
      right hand window.
      Double click on "CheckedValue".
In the opening 'Edit DWORD Value' box,set the 'Value data:' to 1

Press Ok,exit regedit, restart your pc. Thanks to this link
  4. After restarted, 'enable viewing of hidden files' and also 'enable viewing protected operating system files'. Then use Windows search utility to search for the following files(if it is found) and delete them
    • msfir80.exe (would be found in c:\windows\system32)

    • msime80.exe (would be found in c:\windows\system32)
    • algssl.exe - You have to go to task manager to terminate the process first.
    • sal.xls.exe
    • tel.xls.exe
  5. Then fix the startup settings. You can either get it done with regedit or msconfig or both.
      Look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run &
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete way the entries for both msfir80.exe and msime80.exe

      Disable the entries under msconfig/startup
  6. Done, restart you machine.

What is this bugger Algssl.exe ?

Under Window Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete)

Who is in the family (The whole package of malwares that collectively act together)?

  1. Autorun.inf
  2. msime80.exe
  3. msfir80.exe
  4. sal.xls.exe

How Do They Look Like ?

Autorun.inf is just a text file and triggers everytime you accesses the partition which it sits.

Sal.xls.exe is originated from China. I believe it is spread heavily via the Edison Chen's dilemma.

Symptoms ?

  1. Make changes to registries during system startup (Windows Boot Up).
    • Disable viewing of hidden files
    • Automatically starts trojan files(msime80.exe & msfir80.exe)

  2. It will place autorun.inf in all partitions.
  3. It will place 'sal.xls.exe' in non active partitions --> you have to enable viewing protected operating system files.
  4. It will place msfir80.exe and msime.exe into '\windows\system32\' of the active partitions. You have to search msfir80.exe and msime80.exe from within the 'c:\windows\system32' itself.
Anti-virus and Malwares Programs ?
  1. Spyware Doctor couldn't find it
  2. AVG couldn't find it
  3. Windows Defender Scanner also couldn't find it...

How Does It Spread ?
  1. I got it from thumb-drive interactions, where the file 'autorun.inf' will copy sal.xls.exe into your computer from the infected thumb-drive.
  2. Spreading of LAN is not yet proven.
  3. Infected download files.

The Best Solution ?
--> Use Windows Vista and enable User Account Control(UAC). Why ?
  1. UAC prevents it from altering any registries during Windows booting up.
  2. Windows Defender (with UAC turned on) able to analyze where it is coming from ? (i.e the actual path of the files and etc)
  3. Even if you haven't totally got rid of all the files, having UAC turned-on would allow you to monitor what funny things malwares are doing at the back; by auditing changes request to system settings
