Barracuda Extends Support for Microsoft

Press release - Kuala Lumpur, Jun 30, 2014:

Barracuda Networks, Inc., a leading provider of cloud-connected security and storage solutions, announces that their Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) will be equipped with new capabilities to support Microsoft products in the areas of Windows Remote Desktop Services, virtualization and public Cloud.

Thiban Darmalingam, the Regional Manager for Barracuda in Malaysia says, “It is actually pretty scary that less than 20 per cent of Internet connections today are secured by NG Firewalls - according to the recent Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Network Firewalls report.”

“In fact by the end of 2014, this number will increase to 35 per cent of the installed base, with 70 per cent of new enterprise edge purchases being NGFWs. Also, Gartner also reported that through 2018, more than 75 percent of enterprises will continue to seek network security from a different vendor than their network infrastructure.”

“With the new updates, Barracuda NG Firewall will help customers swiftly and safely transition to newer topologies proposed in the Microsoft ecosystem. The latest release expands our integration with Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization and Microsoft Azure public cloud infrastructure enabling our customers to further capitalize on their Microsoft investments,” he further adds.

CA : Global Study Reveals that the Role of IT Continues to Shift Towards Enabling Innovation

Press Release - Jun 11, 2014

According to a new study by CA Technologies, “TechInsights Report: The Changing Role of IT and What to Do About It,” CIOs in Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) lead the world in viewing IT as “very strategically important” or “fundamental” to the business.

The study also confirms what many in the industry have suspected: as the role of IT is increasingly seen as supporting business, the IT spend is growing within other lines of business.

More than one-third (36 percent) of IT spend is now happening outside of the IT department in APJ organizations. This clearly demonstrates the transformation of technology from a centrally-managed IT responsibility to corporate-wide business enabler and redefines how technology is purchased, deployed and used. And, within three years, the amount of IT spending controlled by lines of business is expected to swell to 45 percent.

Success Story: Learning from Elon Musk

Two things I have learned from this video:

1.) Anticipate Failure

In the video, Elon explained that when he started Tesla, he thought the business might not be successful. His reason was that he had started company to explore sustainable transportation which the objectives far outweigh the importance of business - for humanity.

Though may sound a bit unacceptable from a Silicon Valley's perspective, my thought is that Elon had got it all figured out - he will still be able to sell the technologies and patents developed for Tesla even if the business couldn't take off well.

2.) Have Friends Around You

It is quite encouraging to see successful people in Silicon Valley to have friends supporting their ambitions. This is not the first time I have heard of similar endemic, for instance, when Marissa Mayer took over Yahoo, she received tremendous supports from friends in the Valley.

This phenomenon is very unfamiliar in Malaysia and APAC - when you are pursuing something great, chances are you will be left with no friends and no investors.

Hence, the strategy is try not to play the monopoly game in a sense that people feel threatened by your endeavour - if you are able to outsource technology from partners, consider the options.

Gphone Evo (Android Smartphone) Review

The Gphone is a Octa Core, Android powered smartphone, currently available in Malaysia since Apr 2014- the RRP for the unit is RM899.

Octa Core means 8 cores as compared to the more common Quad core (4 cores).

When I received the demo unit, I was told that Gphone wasn't the only Octa Core smartphone in the market, Samsung had already rolled out similar specification to the market in the form of Samsung Exynos 5 Octa. Nonetheless, the person-in-charge told me that Gphone Octa Core capability is different from that of Exynos.

The Exynos 5 Octa is based on having two distinct sets of Quad cores, seamlessly switching between each others. According to the statement from the website mentioned above - "the four "big" ARM® Cortex-A15 cores would process computation-intensive tasks such as extensive gaming and media-rich browsing, the four "LITTLE" ARM® Cortex-A7 cores would handle the lighter workloads."

Hence, the idea of Exynos 5 Octa is to increase CPU performance by minimizing energy consumption.

In retrospect, Gphone Octa core is a supposedly true Octa core (8 cores permanently); and after initial testing it by running games on it, I found that battery consumption seemed to be normal - which means I found it to be energy efficient as well.
