GE is banking on Internet of Things

The 'Industrial Internet' as what GE's CEO Jeff Immelt called it, he wants GE to capitalize on it, hopefully to revolutionize it, but not to own it - "nobody can really own the Industrial Internet", quipped Jeff during the D11 conference.

GE was invited to D11 partly motivated by its recent move to setup more presence in the Silicon Valley. Jeff explained that it was really a move to become more integrated with the main stream computer and software industry, to mix with the right community and to work with and hire the best minds in the industry.

With the strategy on 'Industry Internet' - which is analogous to Internet of Things trend - GE has hoped to create new businesses for both its enterprise and consumer markets by offering value added services on top of its existing assets such as jet engines, turbines, medical equipments and etc.

Computer Security Updates Week 5 of May 2013

Refer to Computer Security Updates Week 4 of May 2013; in which the biggest news was US NSA Director warns that Cyber attacks will get worse.

For this week / last week, here are / were the biggest news.
  • McAfee introduces Endpoint Security Suites with hardware-assisted capability.
  • Sophos RED wins Protector at Annual Information Security Awards.
  • Advanced U.S. weapons system designs could have been compromised.
  • Kaspersky Lab to Host First Annual Government Cybersecurity Forum in Washington D.C.
  • Sophos blog: Cybercrooks siphon $800,000 from US fuel distribution firm.
  • Eset blog: Twitter beefs up security with two-factor security system.
  • CA: Study finds security not a problem for cloud.
Hence, for this week, it is interesting to learn a few new technological ideas and security trend.

SourceFire's Firepower:

First of all, we learned that SourceFire's Firepower power technology is based on the ideology of intrusion prevention at the network layer, it aspires to perform the balancing act between checking every bit of data in and out of the network and to do that really fast to achieve the highest throughput rates in the industry.

McAfee's DeepSAFE:

Secondly, we learned  that McAfee Deep Defender is a hardware-assisted endpoint security solution jointly developed by Intel and McAfee with the intention of realizing deeper security footprint.

Basically, having deeper security footprint means it is able to protect against lower level security threats which reside not in the application layer hosted by operating system such as rootkit threats.

McAfee Deep Defender is powered by McAfee DeepSAFE technology which sits in betweeen the operating system layer and the CPU layer. In other words, DeepSAFE operates like firmware in the lower level (based on Intel architecture) but not embedded.

Unlike traditional security solutions, McAfee DeepSAFE technology operates beyond the operating system to provide real-time kernel monitoring to detect and block advanced, hidden threats, such as stealth rootkits and APTs.

Continuous Malware Analysis for proactive approach:

With SourceFire updates on its Retrospective AMP Solution which leverages on the power of cloud, big data and analytics to perform malware detection in a proactive manner.

While SourceFire prides that they are the first in the industry to create such solution, Bit9 on the other hand, had earlier collaborated with FireEye and/or Palo Alto Networks to create similar feat, resulted in the product known as Bit9 Connector.

Apparently, Bit9 Connector is a result of integration between Bit9's endpoint security solution, FireEye's Malware Analysis solution and Palo Alto's Malware alerts solution - best of breed.

Universal Robots presents high-end robotic arms for light weight precision manufacturing

Almost everybody grew up fascinated by robots – I was one of them.

Back in year 2003, 3 young engineers (Esben Ostergaard, Kasper Stoy and Kristian Kassow) from University of Southern Denmark in Odense mooted the idea to create a light robot for the food industry. During those times, robotics market was dominated by heavy, expensive and unwieldy robots – such scenario is the reality for now too.

By 2005, they have founded Universal Robots (UR) and targeted the SME market. The establishment of the company was made possible by an investment from Syddansk Innovation, a Danish public investment fund.

By 2009, the first UR5-robots are sold by distributors in Denmark and Germany. By 2011, UR entered Asian market.

The UR robot is a six-jointed industrial robotic arm meant for light weight and precision manufacturing industry. It was designed to be simple in terms of setup-up and programming. It is also affordable for SME market.

Besides that, its safety mode feature is one which converts futuristic visions into sales.

Sourcefire Proactive Security Approach based on Analyzing Malware Trajectory

We have been covering Sourcefire for years.

In retrospect, let's try to understand its offerings and products in a more layman's term manner.

Firepower ?

First of all, let's try to understand what Firepower really is.

Firepower is a technolgy by Sourcefire created to perform intrusion prevention with utmost throughput rates by leveraging on parallel processing of CPU and stacking of network modules - it is deployed as appliance.

In short, the goal of Firepower is to achieve the ability to inspect just about every bit of data (packet) in and out of the network to identify potential intrusion.

Based on Firepower technology, 4 solutions are made available by Sourcefire.
  • Traditional IPS (Intrusion Prevention System)
  • Next-generation IPS (NGIPS) - with contextual awareness
  • Next-generation firewall (NGFW)
  • SSL inspection.

Google I/O 2013 - 900 million, 40 billion, 750 million

Last year, Google Glass was interruptedly introduced by Google co-founder Sergey Brin.

Google I/O 2012 was mostly about Google Glass and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

At the end of the conference last year, it was concluded that Google Glass will be available in Explorer edition (for early adopters) by early 2013 for USD 1,500 (for US only).

The world survived 22 Dec 2012 and now we are at Google I/O 2013 and Google Glass has finally been made available for exploration-only to selected applications.

I must say that it looks like a marvel innovation, it feels like a great tool for journalists to cover news events.

As for the rest of it, we will have to wait and see. If it is going to be priced around RM 2,500 or below, I would buy it as early-adopters. When it is going to be available for Malaysia ? Don’t know yet.

The keynote of Google I/O 2013 which happened early this morning (16 May 2013 12am) was broadcasted live from Moscone center, San Francisco through youtube channel. In fact, anybody can watch any keynotes and sessions conducted live throughout this 3 days event.

Basically, Google I/O is an annually event for Google developers with preference on open source development.

This year, it focuses on two major platforms; 1.) Android and 2.) Chrome.

As the matter of fact, the whole event will evangelize on all other available development platforms by Google which also include Google+, Google Cloud platform, Google Maps, Youtube and Google Wallet.

Bear in mind that all these platforms come available with development SDK and APIs and one can always leverage on them to make business and enhance the livelihood of others – possibilities are endless literally.
