Maxis Marketing Experiences

Maxis started off 2nd quarter 2005 with a bang... 3G 3G 3G.

On 23 April 2005, they warned the world that 3G is going to be the next big thing..

Finally, on 2nd July 2005, 3G is really launched for real. The launching was coupled with heavy advertisings on billboards, newspaper and also banners hosted on resellers' shop-front.

Probably due to luke-warm responses, on 24th August 2005, they highlighted the fact that 3G is now tied up with bank services.

Now, October 2005, I began to notice that Maxis advertisements are appearing on the Internet- yahoo.

Right now, they are promoting the idea of EMO - Push Email.

Lesson Learned:
1. Marketing is associated with risks.
2. Change strategy when expectations are not met.
+ Target different market
+ Change medium
3. No one can predict a "sure-win" marketing strategy. Therefore, performance tracking is important for every marketing campaign.
4. The only "promised" benefit of marketing investment is "branding" establishment. Other elements are subjective to abuse of market forces and lacking of intelligence.

It is essential to keep marketing operating cost at its minimal for these reasons.

Implementing Smart School in Malaysia

Revisiting Malaysia's Smart School Pilot Project:
The pilot project was intended to introduce ICT technologies to schools in Malaysia. 87 schools had been identified all over Malaysia for the pilot project. Deployment of computers which are inter-connected with all other smart-schools is not enough to make the deal looks convincing, thus the project team in-charge came out with a solution called the Smart School Integrated Solutions (SSIS) .

The main components of SSIS are the teaching-learning materials, the smart school management system (SSMS), technology infrastructure, systems integrations and support systems.

The Corporate Information Superhighway (COINS), a fast, open, nationwide and globally connected broadband multimedia communications network with a capacity of up to 10 Gbps. In addition, all the schools have a dedicated Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) back-up line in the event that the COINS line is down.

The problems:
After the pilot project ended on 2002, no one is wiling to invest more to sustain the project.

If you noticed some cost-related phrase taken from the document:

• One-off telecommunications costs were included in the Smart School Pilot Project Agreement, with the understanding that these costs would be borne by the MOE after the pilot project.

• A network’s physical infrastructure should be actively supported by the service provider, not just as a vendor but as a “smart” partner, especially in terms of getting an “educational price” for telecommunications support and maintenance.

• The budget was a constraint in determining the network’s design, especially in terms of server capacity at the schools and Data Centre and the bandwidth to be provided to the schools.

The Smart School Pilot Project was introduced and ended with broadband still in its infancy. As the matter of fact, I clearly remember that broadband was already picking-up by mid of 2002 as my friend was testing the streamyx email account for its integrity, such as uptime and not-spam phenomenon. I think that during that time, he did decide to use the streamyx email as the main email, dropping off hotmail, yahoo and etc.

However, things changed again when Yahoo introduced 1G email quota for all free users. Google came in shortly with the same offering and both had knock-out streamyx out of the email business.

And I guess that with Streamyx taking the lead as nationwide broadband provider with others trailing closely behind, the original concept of smart school had been obsolete. Schools could just request to have a broadband connection by themselves, without the need to wait for big brother’s (MOE) initiative.

They could start with just having a plain broadband connection and then start to send email around their counterparts. This will encourage more schools to apply for broadband connections and from thereon, explosive activities can be anticipated.

Therefore, the million dollar question is:

1. how much does a government school has in term of funds to invest on ICT infrastructure without incentives from MOE?

Or 2. Do they have to consult advices from MOE for every investment made?

To get the right answer, I have identified someone who had dealt with schools and universities in a success manner; SmartScan. Smartscan is revolutionary imaging program scanning images from hardcopies and converting them into objects such as marks, ticks, texts, lines and shapes using Artificial Intelligence(A.I) technology. With SmartScan, the data collection process is now more reliable, flexible, affordable and user-friendly.

SSIS could easily replaced by intranet solutions such as that provided by TMS's intranet solution.

What needed next are contents for the ICT infrastructure.

Contents - My Suggestion:
We must preach smart-learning instead of smart school. The concept of smart school was meant for the privilege only, what would happen to the rest of our country’s next generation?

Smart-learning basically is innovative learning instead of technology enabled learning. They have different meanings but yet certain things are common to each other.

To enable smart learning, it is obvious that innovations must be introduced into the system. Currently, the buzz word is “e-learning”.

According to MMU-CMEAD, e-Learning can just be simply defined as learning via electronic media. It is an innovative approach to corporate training, which covers a wide set of applications and processes such as Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classrooms, and digital collaboration. It includes the delivery of content via Internet, intranet/extranet (LAN/WAN), audio- and videotape, satellite broadcast, interactive TV, and CD-ROM.

MMU-CMEAD is the IT department for MMU for its in-house IT system. They main product is called Multi-media Learning System (MMLS). The following are some extract about MMLS.

“Underlying the concept of “a virtual teacher within a virtual classroom”, Multimedia Learning
System (MMLS) was developed to address to the needs of the entire educational enterprise. It
is an intelligent management system, which serves as a platform for the delivery of
multimedia rich contents to its learners.”

In short, MMLS is actually a tool for enabling of e-learning environment. It is an enabled which promotes the usage and development of e-learning’s content.

e-learning is meant to replace traditional-learning method (TLM). Recent years ago, there is a group of entrepreneur promoting the concept of e-learning and they are known as Xthreme. Xthreme has Thompson Education as their principal for e-learning’s contents. However, Xthreme focuses on business development rather than educational.

However, what I did learn from Xthreme is that educational-software is useful for learning. For instance, I have always envisioned a software which I can practice speaking with a computer in order to master a new language. Of course, the software has to come with speech synthesis and speech recognition facilities. Also, I thought about software which can cater for mathematical learning. The one which probably come close to this reality is US based mathematica software. From Malaysia site, UPM’s advanced mathematical research group has actually produced a product called “Animated Introductory Calculus” which preaches the concept of Computer Animation for learning Mathematics with comparison to Traditional Learning Method. Personally, I have seen the product during my visit to IPTA exhibition held on 30-Sept-05 to 2-Oct-05. Basically, it is a multimedia-driven content which uses Macromedia Flash for development. It focuses on animation as the hints towards a mathematical question. This means that if someone is unable to comprehend a mathematical problem, the animation will guide you through. This is good, the fact that many couldn’t master mathematics is because the inability to visual the solutions.

However, I am suggesting another solution for mathematical learning. That is using computer programming to learn mathematic. Let me prove it to you for the next round.

Who would pay for the project team? Based on case study of Malaysia’s Smart School Pilot Project, MOE and the big boys is reluctant to invest in this area. Recent budget announcement didn’t specifically mention anything about smart school.

Currently, apart from APIIT being the lead of smart school initiative, I am really cracking my head on the solution to get something started. Perhaps APIIT is the white knight I am looking for?

According to the case study conclusion document, MOE bear the cost of the pilot smart school project, which means that government pay for it. After it is done, State Educational Departments are expected to carry the burden. But so far what is the status?

Korean Technology:
My recent visit to Korea also landed me with the opportunity of meeting a company called TTOKSORI-Life English.

It is developer of software and contents for language learning. Its contents are quite special because they consist of screen play. Means that they are in the form of movies.

Their technique is to make use of multiple frames each consisting of a movie onto a single screen which “entertain” users with mixture of languages for a given scenario. This means that there could be a play which involves two actors and each speaking different languages. The subtitles can be intermixed too.

the death of credit card

We have often heard people saying "i lost my job and thus the only way to survive better is to use credit card for paying petrol money.." - a common phrase.

The Malaysian community will suffer a huge social shock and setback by November 2005 when petrol station stop accepting credit card as payment method from its customers.

Petrol station earn only 3% from Diesel and 5% from petrol of commission per transaction. Merchant fees for credit card service imposed by bank is between 1.25% to 3%, thus their net margin is between 1.75% to 3.65%.

Bad Economy:
This will be bad for the economy due to the fact that it affects the consumer directly. Petrol cost is one of the heaviest commitment a general Malaysian would ever have to bear. On the average, most people would be required to spend 10% of their income on petrol. The fact that petrol is more crucial than food in term of business one can afford to skip meal in a busy day, but skipping petrol is not possible due to official undertaking. Mind you that one can't cancel a business appointment just because the traveling distance is way beyond budgeted account, but one would probably skip meal on a business schedule.

Thus, credit card is the cushion for many to deal with financial management. Many would use credit card as the backup when the money in their banks have dried out while waiting for the pay day of the month. Sadly, they needed to pump petrol to get to work in order to get pay. While water is provided in the office and one can do away with expensive food, there is no way one can starve the vehicle.

In other words, by November 2005, many Malaysian would cut down expenses to an even greater level.

Many would suffer soon, for instance, credit card sales-people will face a much harder time in trying to sell a credit card to customer. The consumer would spend less on other things like clothing, mobile phone, food and even entertaintment in order to prepare a backup for their petrol drinker; vehicle.

Money Money ?
Can Redtone's Mobile Money come to dilute the complication ?

From current scenario, it seems that Mobile Money is even more costlier to merchants than credit card. Mobile Money levied a 1.525% merchant fees to its merchants. This is of course cheaper than standard merchant fees of 3%-6% levied on to general merchants expect for petrol stations.

Unless, they payment account is associated with debit card or saving accounts. Banks would charge its cusomter some percentage for intra-bank services from saving accounts.

The reason is simple, if anyone transacted with saving account and debit card, the bank is not able to generate any income as compared to credit card since they(banks) hope that you will not pay-all your credit card charges so that they can impose an interest of 1.5% or 18% per annum from users directly.

But Mobile Money actually has such facility where users can allow direct tied-up with their personal saving accounts.

A tougher time for Malayian to anticipate and thus this will be a lousy Hari Raya for those celebrating because many like me would start worrying about our cash flow for the coming months and years.

When the spending power is weaken, the consumer market would collapse. Thus, you are are dealing with consumer product, you have the right to worry!

Nevertheless, perhaps it is good for competitor of Mobile Money such as Sapura's M2, to set petrol station as the focus group of their core activities.

Epson GT-5000

I was trying to install a scanner; Epson GT-5000 into a PC running Windows 2k. It has to be connected to the parallel port because it is an really old scanner. Even Epson is not supporting it anymore.

Thus, there is no way for me to get a legitimate TWAIN driver from the source; Epson. I have to get it from elsewhere. Of course, searches from the Internet would land one on the site of DriverGuide. It claims to have archived a total of 100,000+ drivers.

If you are wondering "how DriverGuide ever got incorporated?", I would like to suggest that the answer is hobby-cum-netpreneurship. This is because DriverGuide is essentially a site where its members collect driver's file from all over the places and then try to make business sense out of it. They don't liaise with Epson, HP or Fujixerox. This can be proven by the fact that one can actually find driver's file from DriverGuide in non-english medium. Take for example, the famous file for "twain262.exe" is a spanish-language file. Thus, it implies that someone manage to succumb the file from some Spanish computer and host it up to hope for revenue generation.

However, DriverGuide is actually a good place to visit. Despite providing the means of download for pay-only-member, one can also opted for free-download account. Of course, their core concern is to drive traffic to their URL and then they will decide on the best revenue-model. In most cases, it would be Internet-advertising.

It seems that TWAIN is a non-profit group which serves as the committee overseeing development and standards for TWAIN. Thus a scanner driver is called a TWAIN driver. Manual Mode and Auto mode:
Just two days ago, I was called up to help a friend who was experiencing problem with her Epson Expression scanner. Her complain was that "she is unable to crop the scanned material from a utility which used to show up everything she scans something. It just gone now.

Initially I thought it was some software corruption or Windows XP problems. And hence I proceeded with uninstalling the software and reinstall them again. It took me a while as I had to download the new TWAIN driver (scanner driver) from the Internet because Win2K TWAIN driver won't be installed to Windows XP PC. (From the device manager it showed that scanner was working properly, however, with the wrong TWAIN driver, it won't scan)

After everything was restored, the ghost is still there. The magic window or utility still didn't show-up. I began worried, has she been suffering from somekind of hallucination ? Is she for real ? the fact that I tried all over the places and couldn't find any clue to launching that utility described by her. What she said makes sense, there should be such tool for a scanner because one is supposed to be able to select the subset area to be scanned; from the utility.

As my cold sweat and stress was rising, I began to pay attention to some text written on the progress-bar window as I was scanning something, in hope for miracles. The text read "To scan in Manual mode instead of Auto Mode, press cancel"

That is it!!!! I found the ghost

Now I know that scanner's utlity is also known as "Manual mode", at least for Epson's printer. It is quite stupid yet brilliant. They should have placed a button with label of "Other utility" in the first place. It took me a while and thankfully the "cancel" button worked even though it suffered some multi-tasking inability. (One needed to press continuously on the "cancel" button because it is multi-task to accept event-called all the time. According to my friend, she had tried the button but just no response. I understood that completely, it is the software problem.

Windows XP:
Thus, there is nothing wrong with Windows XP. In fact, it is blessing for many like me to have Windows XP around because the provision of PC-maintenance service to my friends and "customers" has been really nice and easy ever since the days of Windows 2K,ME and 9x.

But I recently found a way to make Windows XP hang while performing a large operation.. It isn't quite the type of "hang" you would expect, this time is much more technical and thus forgiven. I will show you on later blog.

Nevertheless, I still couldn't setup the scanner; Epson GT-5000 to my Windows 2000 PC despite having tried out the file ""

Perhaps the scanner is not functioning anymore. And my advice to you is that if you are looking to setup Epson GT-5000 to Windows 2000 and Windows XP, it would save you a hell lot of time by sending it to recycling factory and then get a latest model scanner.

This is not a great blog yet.. but it is showing tremendous improvement over the past months..

For some reason, my English improved after writting so many articles and blogs and documents over the years. In fact, I started to experience some discomfort in my finger; I had to stop typing when it happened.

Currently, this blog captured around average of 25 visits per day. The best part of this is that it doesn't have hardcore fan, I could only think of a few people who might visit this blog every now and then. Most of the traffic are coming from the Internet via Yahoo, Google and MSN.

No.3 in MSN:
This blog proudest moment is now where search under "tech blog" landed with No. 3 ranking. It has even beaten ZDNet - Tech blog.

A total of RM 136.8 bil was allocated for the budget towards 2006. That is only USD 36 Billion.

For comparison wise, it is not a bad sum of money. To have a picture of how much is USD 36 billion ?

Microsoft profit = USD 2.9 billion (2004)
Thus you need to have 12 Microsoft operating at full force in order to get USD 36 billion ? Not really, that sum is cash flow, profit is quite a different sum of money. In layman term, cash flow money doesn't belong to you 100%, just a dynamic amount which you may have for a given period of time.

Therefore, it is important that we facilitate the travel of knowledge workers and business travellers to Malaysia. Presently, multimedia companies operating outside of Cybercities (Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Technology Park Malaysia, Bayan Lepas in Pulau Pinang and Kulim HiTech Park in Kedah) do not enjoy tax incentives given to MSC-status companies. To further encourage ICT and multimedia activities including Regional Shared Services Centres, throughout the country, the Government proposes Pioneer Status of 50% income tax exemption for 5 years or Investment Tax Allowance of 50% be given to qualifying companies operating outside Cybercities. This incentive will only be extended to companies endorsed by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC).

The Government wishes to encourage Malaysian ICT companies to grow and penetrate global markets. MDC will work together with Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and Khazanah to identify and match leading MSC status companies with suitable GLCs to test bed their products. These GLCs will become reference sites to showcase the products of MSC-status companies when marketing to prospective customers globally.

5. Encouraging R & D:
The development of science and technology as well as R&D will continue to be encouraged to generate new sources of growth. An allocation of RM868 million (USD 228 mil)is provided under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The R&D Grant Scheme will focus on biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, advanced materials, ICT, nanotechnology and alternative sources of energy, including solar, to encourage innovation among local companies and developing new products.

This is nothing compared to Korean IT-839 strategy which allocated a total of USD 400 million for R & D. We thus expert Malaysia to be two times slower than the Korean.

6. Funds for training - Developing human captial
Human resource development must be enhanced to ensure the nation remains competitive and resilient, particularly in a global economy where knowledge, science and technology are highly valued. In this respect, quality education will be emphasised to equip Malaysians with knowledge, skills and positive values to become a workforce imbued with a culture of high performance. Quality education will also ensure that they remain relevant to meet current market requirements to face the increasingly competitive international environment. A total of RM5 billion is allocated for education and training under development expenditure, including RM1.3 billion for pre-school, primary and secondary schools and matriculation, RM1.4 billion for higher education, RM1.1 billion for training and RM1.2 billion for ICT, curriculum development, hostels and teachers’ quarters.

A Young Entrepreneurs’ Scheme will be implemented by the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development in fields, such as ICT, tourism, halal products as well as food processing and packaging;

Something interesting to look out for. At least we know that the grants will be back. Small grant such as Cradle Investment Program will be available for some time now since they only provide for RM 50K per project for a duration of 6 months.

Many new R & D projects will be initiated. It is very unlikely that existing R & D project will be given second round funding unless it is proven that market commercialization is pretty much viable in the near future. To enable this believe, fellow researcher must collaborate with private companies as partner to integrate its invention into the company's existing business stream, otherwise there is nothing concrete. For instance, a R & D in Biometric Identification System must partner with embedded system company to propose for a second round funding targeting product finalization aiming at the automotive vehicle's embedded system. The partner must be proven to have the resources for the marketing take-off and business contacts. Most important of all, both parties must have agendas which can work together.

This budget is good for those ICT companies involve with R & D related work. It is less attractive for companies dealing with enterprise solutions and even for outsourcing service provider.

Expo R & D IPTA 2005

Location at PWTC, Exhibition hall(30th September 2005 to 2nd October 2005):

When I walked into the hall, I was shocked to see the size of its activities. So many smart people out there... so many inventors.

I was so filled with jeolousy and wanted to talk to each and everyone of them to challenge my intellectual.

Thus, I start from the first booth and started introducing myself and the company I represent. Along the way, I tried to listen to their inventions and it actually gave me a lot of entertaintment.

1. Psychological Stress Sensor.
If I am not mistaken it is done by U.M researcher. It measures changes in enzyme.
This is a not-bad research because i believe that stress is the biggest catalyst of all diseases.

2. SKINPLAST for Ulcer and wound.
Regular mouth ulcer sufferer would know it, it takes average 14 days for the ulcer would to completely cure. During those time, one would suffer while eating and drinking.

Chinese would usually resort to Watermelon-extract-powder which only serves to minimize the pain. For Skinplast, thanks to research group from U.M, it can speed up the recovering process.

Some Malaysian villagers have been using for ages the bark of ZX plant to treat oral recurrent aphthous ulcerations (RAU) and skin wounds. RAU affects about 25% of the world population.

SKINPLAST made of ZX plant extract is a herbal product and is beneficial for the treatment of mouth ulcers (RAU) and skin wounds.

For this research team, they don't even have a web site for it.

3. Blanching diagnostic Kit
Blanching is a heat treatment process generally applied to fruits and vegetables prior to storage inactive the enzymes present. The major problems in blanching process are over-blanced or under-blanched.

Blanching diagnostic kit is developed for to determine the adequacy of blanching. It is a device consisting of chemical solutions. It determines the degree of blanching process with colour changes by the redox reaction in the presence of enzyme and chemical mixture. It facilitate blanching testing as a simple process where it involves only a device rather than 14 apparatus and instruments needed in the conventional procedure. In addition, 8 steps in conventional method for the tests are being reduced to 4 simple steps.

Networking Expert:

This is Dr. Suhaidi of University Utara Malaysia. Its research group is famous for computer networking stuff, as shown in the picture, it is something about secure networking implementation. He was telling me about the ICOCI 2006 conference.

They are cautious with IP protection that there is no printer brochure to be distributed. That is why you can see that instead of doing brochure, they did a big poster for display.

I thought I am the only one who thought about creating a portal and let these R & D guy upload their contents to attract investors, partners and more funding. But it seems like everything has got someone figured out already.

But the problem anticipated is that only those technologies which are lousy and not in demand would be caught in the databases, popular and good ones would have already been grapped and patented around.

They are all complaining the same things...
1. Not enough funding. They haven't been able to apply for new funding for the past 3 months. But since yesterday, government just allocated RM868 millions for R & D and is sure to give them certain degree of excitement.
2. They are all having the same thought. Looking for angel to help them with the next time. They have done their job, which is to realize the idea and crytalize the inventions. whatever happen is god willing. All of them are not surprise about my proposal as partner for commercialization, collaboration and middle-man for investor. They are all open for anyone, anywhere and anytime as long as they don't have to pay anything. Typical Malaysian.. So who is the fool here ? (don't mention pls)
3. I can see, apart from some which already engaged with commercial partners, that most of the inventions are only prototype ready. There are still plenty to go and to prove. Some of them invented something and just don't know what to do next. There is this researcher from University Sabah Malaysia just sat there and have no interest to really explain to me, but he tried his best. They developed a shrimp cultivation system under biotechnology. They hope that someone like me would get over-excited about it. Anyway, I will try my best too.

My favourite invention ?
I was attracted to the "Animated Introductory Calculus" created by a research group in UPM.

Animated Introductory Calculus Educational Software and Textbook is a next-generation textbook that combines the power of multimedia technology such as Flash and couple with thoroughly developed Calculus content (means that someone has to be a mathematian who understand thoroughly everything about such topic) to provide a rich and effective learning experience.

It contains a comprehensive series of multimedia video lectures that enriches and energizes lessons, facilites whole-class teaching, motivates students, enabled teachers to be more creative, promotes enthusiam for learning, improves understanding, leads to higher levels of retention, raises achievement and is more interesting than traditional lectures.

I totally agreed. I wish them all the best.

I didn't manage to talk to everyone but at least I visited 80% of the exhibitions. All of them are very intelligent and friendly people. Although some seems layback, it is becoz of their character of a non-outspoken type. It is blessing to have most of them to be Malaysian. I was a bit dissappointed because there is nothing much I go do about Biotech with my IT skills. It seems like they are very much more chemical-engineering driven than IT-driven.

ICOCI 2006

call for papers.... yo

International conference on computing & informatic 2006 is coming to you soon. This is a Malaysian event organized by Malaysian, ya!

Why are they yelling ?
They need to look for sponsor, they need money to run it.

1. University Utara Malaysia
2. IEEE CS Malaysia
3. MDC, Malaysia
4. MOSTI (Ministry of Science, technology and innovation of Malaysia)
5. Ministry of energy, water and communication, Malaysia (MCMC)

So, organizer not willing to pay much for it, this should be it. MCMC, MDC and MOSTI are direct beneficiary of federal budget, who has more money than they are ?

perhaps it is bureaucratic issues, depending on who call for it, in this case I think is UUM whose research group is only benefiting from application-approved government research grant.

What is it ?
The ICOCI 2006 seeks papers describing research contributions to the field of computer communications and informatics. This conference aims to bring together academicians, researchers, scholars, corporate executives and representatives of interested organizations and foundations, to exchange opinions and experiences, views on emerging trends in the field of computer, communications and informatics.

CEO should attend to find out the following:
1. Is there any new technologies available ?
2. How far in-front or behind is your technical team in term of R & D?
3. Who is who in the field ?

4. Is what you are doing now already obsolete ? hehehe...very painful one ler (god bless u)

You can also do the following:
1. Hire CTO to your organization.
2. Teach those R & D geeks about making money in the ICT industry.
3. Educate researcher about the problems in the ICT industry. Don't just spend money and focus on inspiration.

4. Remind R & D group that they are spending federal money and should always make effort to contact evangelist like Brandon Teoh to help them with commercialization, earn the money and contribute back to the federal fund.

Don't Forget:
Also, don't forget to congratulate researchers for their great achievement and hard work. Inventions and innovations are subjective matter. There is no right and wrong, perhaps the biggest enemy is time.

Malaysia needed these people to help go through the fundamental phases. We can't jump straight to 2020. What needed is more coordinated activities, like accumulation of documentation and aggresive promotion for awarness.
