How to purge cached content (from search engines)?

Someone was asking me blogger opinion on methods to get contents to be purged from search engines' caches. Initially I thought it is quite redundant and impossible, it will go off in time to come. Sure, this is the fact. And nobody will even remember given the fact that the Internet never sleeps.

Then, was caught up this French news anchorwoman Melissa Theuriau about her lawyer's attempts to get some illegally captured semi-nude photographs from some beaches off the Internet. This is not exactly very illegal given the fact that it is captured on public places. Period.

But I do think that Melissa has the right to get the contents off the Internet for the reason that it touches personal aspect of her life and something which she hasn't agreed to.

So, it could be possible (as I planned it).


1. Create more contents:


First of all, consider the presumptuous fact that search engines adopt the long tail concept where older contents would make way for newer contents.

So, it is possible that by keep pushing in contents (tagging to the same subject or keyword) to the Internet, the long tail mechanism will work faster, allowing older and unwanted contents to be purged away faster.

2. Look for Weapon:

To do that effectively, you need to have the right weapon. This can be any web properties (web sites) which the search engines crawl around frequently. For your information, search engines have limited capacity, even though we like to believe that they can do supernatural feats, they do but still limited. So, search engines don't crawl to all web sites directly but to anchor sites which offer aggregations of contents. Very effective contents aggregators that I know are blogger (blogspot), feedburner and netvibes. Those come in second are geocities, linkedin, friendster and blogs (famous blogs like Screenshots, liewcf and etc).

Thus, blogs is an effective weapon.

Assuming that you have an effective blog, then you can keep publishing content pertaining to the subject which you want to refresh. In the case of Melissa, since the 'illegal' photos are traced to a web site which is Korean oriented, it will have to be done from a Korean point of view. Means that get someone to pinpoint the 'hotspot'; the closest point of contact this web site has exposure to search engine spiders, let's say it is at feedburner (again). After determining this, push many Melissa oriented Korean based content to feedburner. In pretty short time, the undesired content could be purged from the Internet.

3. Ethics

The only question to answer is whether this is ethical or not.

In a way, this is like illegal manipulation of the search engine. But in Melissa Theuriau's case, it is very ethical at her disposal.

Perhaps the more hardening question is who should do the job ? Consultant or by herself. If Melissa could do all that by herself, then there will be no issue. However, should some consultants were to be engaged to carry out such activities, then it opens up a bigger room for debates.

This can set a precedence for illegal manipulation or so-called "black mouth" of innocent Internet properties (web sites).

For Melissa to setup her own blog and perform the manipulation, it may seem too slow and uncalled for. Might as well let the content purges by itself. Unless it is being carried out behind the curtains, which the cost may be massive because it is considered special project (which has no predecessor-case and anticipated successor-case.)

Why ? If there would be anticipated successor-case, then the project would become a product and it brings back ethical issues.

The only ethical way to go about is for some experts to teach Melissa all the trick about these things and get her assistant to walk the talk.

IBM and Yahoo come along - Horizontal Enteprise Apps

Thanks to readwriteweb for breaking news, the web world is really a world which never sleeps. The world don't sleep, but in this case, it is more like what we call "New York - the city which never sleeps."



Google is getting ready to hit the enterprise market, competing with Microsoft Office directly. Google is being explosive about its Google Enterprise Applications (GAPE). Microsoft defended their stance and Zimbra complained.

But like it or not, Google is going to take off ASP model players out of the game slowly.

For instance, let's take a look at JustLogin, a china-based ASP model web 2.0 company providing the following web applications for enterprises.

  • eResource
  • eMail
  • eSurvey
  • 360Survey
  • eNotice
  • eFolder
  • eDirectory
  • eTimeclock
  • eTimeCharge

Even though Google Enterprise Apps don't provide for such functions, but the fact that being fully web-based and free, it is able to cater for alternatives in order to achieve the said business functions above. This is similar to the fact that many SME/SMI companies in Malaysia would use Microsoft Excel to deal with accountings matters rather than going straight to software like Quickbooks or USB.

Furthermore, Google Enterprise Apps come with APIs for customization and integration with other platforms, this makes it really powerful.

Let's put aside the free factor for its standard edition, Google is a really powerful brand for consumer to overlook. Remember that brand is a factor to help people with making decision when all choices seems valid ?

Yahoo Joins the Fight:

On 17th September 2007, readwriteweb reported that Yahoo has acquired Zimbra (and open source enterprise office vendor) for $350m.

Kuala Lumpur – September 14, 2007 – According to a survey of more than 1,100 managers by secure infrastructure firm SonicWALL (NASDAQ: SNWL; www.sonicwall.com), business leaders and managers are becoming more comfortable with their staff working remotely, although concerns remain about the impact of the remote work force on employee productivity, effective teambuilding and computer security.

The survey of management views on remote working, sponsored by SonicWALL, Inc. and conducted in the U.S. and Australia indicates more than half of the respondents believe that offering their employees the ability to work remotely is a competitive necessity or at minimum a motivating perk for employees. More than a third of the 1,184 managers surveyed have employees that work out of the office more than 20% of the time. The chief reasons to change their minds among managers with no formal remote worker policy in place are: employee motivation (26%); cost of office space (15%); rising gas prices (14%); and traffic or weather conditions (14%).

Formal Remote Worker Policies:

Half of poll takers also reported that their firms have formal remote worker policies in place. But despite this growing support for offsite working, business leaders identified several concerns unique to managing a remote work force. The top three anxieties – each reported by more than 20% of respondents -- included:
  • Worry over whether their remote workers will remain productive, in spite of the fact that more managers – 34% -- believe remote workers are more productive rather than equally or less productive than their in-office peers;
  • Challenges to building strong teams, with 15% believing remote workers are missing out on an aspect of the job by not being in the office;
  • And concerns about potential security breaches resulting from remote access, especially top-of-mind for almost a quarter of respondents who had no policy in place for securing remote access.




Reassess Plans for Remote Security Connection:

“Our findings confirm that the majority of IT managers need to reassess their plans for safely connecting remote workers to corporate network resources,” said Steve Franzese, vice president of marketing at SonicWALL. “In our 2006 survey of remote workers, we found that security rated very low on their priority list. It’s therefore incumbent upon IT administrators to deploy flexible and practical secure remote access technology that enforces strict security but is easy to manage and even easier for remote employees to use.”

Location Matters:

Location of their remote workers matters to managers. Most (22%) prefer to think of their staff working from home, followed by 16% who find working from hotel business centers acceptable. Coffee shops airports, public libraries and wireless hotspots received limited support – between 6% and 9%. Fewer than 2% of managers would look kindly on workers who choose a wired beach, pool or stadium from which to conduct business.

Microsoft Application Basics

Both Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 are applications that process HTTP client requests by web-based application.
The Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 allows developers to write their own HTTP applications which can be replicated to other servers, backed up and take advantage of anti-virus software. However, development on MS Exchange is not easy. Except for the most basic of applications, Exchange 2000 HTTP development is best left to serious developers and development companies.

The Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 allows users to easily create workspaces and collaborative applications. This way, managers and team leaders create workspaces enables document sharing, indexing, versioning and group folders with little to no interaction from the IT staff. The Long Tail Justification

Previously we look into the scenario which justifies the following:

1. Search engines would purge old contents to make way for new ones. And because of this, there is a case for continuous efforts of web marketing. It can't be that bad, you just have to keep producing new contents based on the same idea.
2. Purged contents would come back in a roller coaster manner.

To prove this, take a look at the following scenario.

Google Analytics

Picture above depicts the life-cycle of this topic since its inception (21st June 2007) up till today. It peaked once.

And to give you a better perspective, it took a cycle of 20 days for each "dormant" period.

From 30th June 2007 to 20th July 2007 (20 days).
From 15th August 2007 to 4th Sept 2007 (20 days).

Currently, the topic for this page ranks at position 11 under Google search. Would it reach another peak ? Let's keep it under intensive care unit (ICU).

As much as I want to associate this largely to the effect of "The Long Tail" concepts. The book also suggest otherwise that it is normal for old web pages to suffer from decay of popularity. It states in the book that,

"Google is not quite time-agnostic, but it does measure relevance mostly in terms of incoming links, not newness. So when you search for a term, you're more likely to get the best page than the newest one. And because older pages have more time to attract incoming links, they sometimes have an advantage over the newer ones. The result is that the usual decay of popularity for blog posts and online news pages is now much more gradual than it was, thanks to the amount of traffic that comes via search. Google is in a sense serving as a time machine, and we're just now being able to measure the effect this has on publishing, advertising, and attention."

Therefore, feel lucky that Google and other search engines have helped you to get through the audience of the world, I respect that greatly.

My conclusion is that it makes business sense for them to purge older web pages because that would complete the Long Tail economy. And to counter-strike that, we just have to maintain the marketing by continuously creating new contents on the same subject which interests us.

SAS Forum 2007 - Growing Together

SAS held a Forum on 5th September 2007 at Shangri-la Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. It is called the "Customer Partnership Growing Together".



Company Strategy:

Managing Director Mr. Jimmy Cheah opened the forum by declaring the numbers of new customers obtained within the last 12 months. The non-exhaustive list includes Affin Bank, Kuwait finance house (banking sector), PIDM & MIROS (Public sector) and University Malaysia (Academia sector).

SAS has always been practicing a direct approach and now they are looking to bring in partners to be categorized as either:
  • System Integrators
  • Resellers & OEM
Jimmy Cheah highlighted the latest market trend which would generate more business intelligence projects, which includes:
  • Industries are facing more competitive market
  • Thinning profit margin
  • More innovation required
  • The need for more data for decision making
Also, he gave us a sneak preview on the growth of Business Intelligence market provided by IDC.
    Global growth for 2008 = 12.5%
    Malaysia growth for 2008 = 12.6%
Thus, clearly it shows that Malaysia has higher growth rate compared to global wise.

Mr. Jimmy Cheah concluded his opening speech by reaffirming the corporate mission, that is "SAS wants to be the first company that customers would call to solve business problems".

Business Insights:

Mr. Steven Ing (Professional Services Director for SAS APAC) then came on stage with a keynote stressing the importance of recognizing and adapting to market agility. Change is getting quicker and quicker. Thus, in order to stay ahead of the curve to avoid collision, people need to have intelligence.

Information is doubling at a faster rate.

As a result of this, he cited a good business to embark on would be the one dealing with the following three activities:
  • Storage of data
  • Interpretation of data
  • Data cleaning
And the latest trend about information is "overloaded".

If we search Google Trends for keyword "business intelligence", we can to see which people in which country actually queried Google most frequently for it. And Malaysia is amongst the top 10. This is pretty amazing and it agrees with figures provided by IDC stated above.

Mr. Steven Ing stressed that Business Intelligence is not just about reporting and queries. He summarized them into key categories:
  • Business Intelligence
  • Dashboard & scorecards (KPI)
  • Analytics infrastructures
  • Planning, budgeting and forecasting
  • Analytics applications
Business Intelligence must be viewed as enterprise platform (total integrated platform) and SAS can do that for you, because it is not easy. The boundary is quite huge. One needs to ask what are the decisions chief executives are looking for into their business systems. The four critical dimensions for the integrated platform consist of:
  • Human Capital
  • Knowledge Process
  • Culture
  • Infrastructures
Mr. Steven Ing concluded by mentioning that there are two differentiators for making businesses successful.
  • Quality of the information that can be surfaced out of the infrastructures that one has
  • Quality of people to drive actions as a result of intelligence
That was pretty cool overview of business insights for the business intelligence business.

Human Continuity:

Then, strategist and corporate motivator Mr. Roger Konopasek came on stage to bring the crowd back from information overloaded into living-the-very-moment. Of course, he started it with a joke and the crowd ate it up. Roger was to deliver the message about "Attracting and retaining a team of the best & brightest".

According to Roger, nobody wants to hire polite and nice young people anymore. The biggest asset for now (according to trend) is to have a brain which is well connected to the mouth so that you can express your idea clearly. The salary culture as we know it, may be a thing in the past.

Go and do what you have a passion for and he asked you to check out the concept of Wikinomics.

He also highlighted that the world needs to shift from a culture of monetory-focus to more advance thinking focus by human advancement and human continuity in a holistic approach discounting communism. He gave a few examples:

1. South West Airline organizational culture focuses on taking care of employees' heart and doesn't offer the best of salary.
2. Global warming and energy efficiency.


The Future of Business Intelligence - Now!


Then came on stage Mr. Steve Illingworth(Senior Manager of Business Information Optimization for HP Asia Pacific to talk about the future of Business Intelligence.

Mainly he talked about HP Neoview System; a data warehousing system that has the following features:
  • Very powerful (you will find out why later)
  • Comes in a box - Check out why is system-in-a-box good for sales
  • A system that doesn't shut down (24 x 7 self maintaining and automatic upgrades)
  • Pre-configured scenarios for finance, telco and retail industry
  • Using Neoview system, we don't need 2 or 3 full time DBAs
The fuss about HP Neoview system is that it comes with a good story and from a good background, as much as the background does for Mr. Steve Illingworth, who has more than 20 years experience from Oracle.

HP Neoview is created when HP current CEO Mr. Mark Hurd took over the office from Carly Fiorina. He had a problem to have a single view of the organization and he didn't have business intelligence. So, Mr. Mark Hurd hired the CIO from Walmart which was using Teradata System for their BI/DW system.

So, HP then assembled a team to work out not only the solution for HP's business intelligence requirements and eventually the solution was promoted to become Neoview System. This is good to hear, it proves a precedence where products are developed based on real scenarios and not based on some ingenious thinking. It is happening in HP. This is important because it takes away all the concerns of original concept and ethics of copying.

It is able to satisfy HP and Walmart requirements. This makes it so powerful!

BIDW Best Practices:

Then, Mr. Yap Chee Wai (Business Development Manager of Sun Microsystems Malaysia) gave a talk about "Making Business Intelligence Data Warehouse (BIDW) Infrastructure Easy.

SUN Microsystem is an infrastructure company. Mr. Yap gave overviews about best practices in terms of SAS infrastructure and the technologies available such as Solaris 10 (which includes zfs; next generation file system).

Conquering Yourself!

Morning session was concluded by Datin Paduka Sharifah Mazlina Syed Abdul Kadir, the first asian woman who conquered the north and south poles. She shared her experience from both conquering the north and south poles and reminded the crowd about global warming effects and self conquering.

Conclusion:

This is a good move by TM Century Solutions and they are determined to set the standard for software towards the freight forwarding industry.

The biggest problem with Open Source is explained here. In short, open source software gives you the code but doesn't offer much about education and support, you just got to figure out the tricks or otherwise, pay for the support.
