Juniper Networks and IBM Pursue Shared Vision of IT Transformation

With ongoing buzz around super data centers, cloud computing, and virtualization. it’s hard to talk about these innovations without highlighting the critical role the network plays in delivering on the promise of each of these advancements in computing. Today, IBM announced an update to its Dynamic Infrastructure of which Juniper is a critical participant delivering shared vision, technology innovation and a robust product portfolio; and Juniper Networks announced a continued broadening of its relationship with IBM.

The two companies have been working together on joint technology solutions, standards development, network management and managed security services since 2007. IBM has included Juniper Networks switching, routing and security products into their data center network portfolio with IBM playing an invaluable role of systems integrator. Most recently, the two companies jointly collaborated on a global technology demonstration highlighting how enterprises can seamlessly extend their private data center clouds. IBM and Juniper are installing advanced networking capabilities into IBM’s nine worldwide Cloud Labs for customer engagements, to be able to seamlessly move client computing workloads between private and publicly managed cloud environments.

The two companies have also been working together on the Stratus Project, Juniper’s initiative to create a single data center fabric that will deliver a quantum jump in scale, performance and simplicity, with the flexibility to support fully converged and virtualized data center environments. The companies are jointly researching cloud computing security models to highlight how customers can mitigate attacks on corporate data and computer systems.

Good Things of Liberalisation of Financial Sector

With Malaysia government goes easy on the financial sector, certain good things are expected to arise.

One of the thing is the increase of ICT-financial related jobs and also the possibility of more foreign expertise (in related areas) coming in to work. In fact, this can be really happening because the USA and Europe are no longer considered to be hot-spots for career-centric green pastures (at least for now) with the economy problems. More Malaysians may also have to come back home to take advantage of the hopefully lower cost of living or to experience the myriad of culture excitements as well as the warm feeling of being at the equator which is partly responsible for the long-serving peacefulness of the Malaysia society; we are all warm-hearted people.

This is further multiplied by the fact that many local ICT technocrats are more than willing to move forward to a consulting and management role, foreigners with technical expertise in core banking and financial sectors should be able to get more opportunities here.

This will also spur more outsourcing opportunities for local software providers in the banking and financial sectors and as a result, these local companies may also want to hire foreign experts to fill up human resources.

The biggest winner in anticipation for such reality is head-hunters who may want to start doing profiling (of candidates) and selling (to prospects) now. Besides that, training companies may be able to grab something from this piece of pie which will run from now through 2011.

The best part of this is the time table.

VB.Net ListView Key

In Visual Basic 2008, there is no 'key' while adding an ListViewItem to ListView. Unlike in Visual Basic 6 (98), you can associate a key to a ListViewItem.

You wanted to use the the following methods, but don't know where to associate a key to the ListViewItem:
  • ListViewItem.ListViewSubItemCollection.IndexOfKey
  • ListViewItem.ListViewSubItemCollection.Find
  • ListViewItem.ListViewSubItemCollection.ContainsKey
  • ListviewItem.ListViewSubItemCollection.RemoveByKey

MSDN doesn't explain well enough.

The 'key' is actually the 'name' property of each ListViewItem's subitem. And each subitem can have a name (key).

And you are able to find listViewItem by specifying either one of the name (key) of the subitems by using ListViewItem.ListViewSubItemCollection.IndexOfKey method. This is powerful. And if there are duplicate names(keys), this method will return with the first ListViewItem. Otherwise, just use the the ListViewItem.ListViewSubItemCollection.Find method which will return you with an array consists of ListViewItems which match the name (key).

This means that now you can have multiple keys in a ListViewItem. This is even more powerful.

Download the source file (VB 2008).

In this sample, a ListView will serve as a display grid for objects in a collection. Each associated object (in collection) and ListViewItem (in ListView) will share the same key (generated unique key).

Thanks to this link for heads-up.

Adobe Extends Flash Platform to Digital Home

Adobe Flash CS4 Professional IconImage via Wikipedia

Adobe Systems announced the extension of the Adobe® Flash® Platform to connected digital home devices with an optimized implementation of Flash technology that delivers high definition (HD) video and rich applications to Internet-connected televisions, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and other devices in the digital living room. The Adobe Flash Platform for the Digital Home now enables the delivery of HD Web videos to digital home devices via the Flash Video (FLV) file format. Consumers will be able to enjoy rich, interactive viewing experiences and amazing new ways to engage with HD content on televisions. Major System on Chips (SoC) vendors, OEMs, cable operators and content providers including Atlantic Records, Broadcom, Comcast, Disney Interactive Media Group, Intel, Netflix, STMicroelectronics, The New York Times Company, NXP Semiconductors, Sigma Designs, and others announced support for the optimized Flash technology today. The Adobe Flash Platform for the Digital Home is available immediately to OEMs and the first devices and SoC platforms with support for the optimized Flash technology are expected to ship in the second half of 2009.

Adobe also announced a new software framework for building media players that extends the capabilities of the Adobe® Flash® Platform. Code-named “Strobe,” the framework will help establish an open industry standard for media players and offer production-ready software components to streamline the development of custom media players, reducing the time content publishers spend creating their own playback technologies. Developers using Flash technologies will be able to quickly and easily add rich functionality—such as advertising, user measurement and tracking, and social network integration—into new custom players that can be branded for individual content owners. Because Strobe takes advantage of the Flash Platform, content owners can be sure that programming will reach the largest possible online audience, as they bring their Strobe-based video players to market. The new Strobe framework builds on the vision of the Open Screen Project, a broad industry initiative to deliver a consistent runtime environment across desktops, televisions, mobile phones, and consumer electronics.

Oracle Will Have Hardware and Platform OS

If the deal goes through, Oracle will have own hardware and OS platform.

It is a proper match with respect to "anti-trust" law in the USA because Oracle hasn't got any hardware business.

However, most of Oracle suite's GUI are developed in the Java platform anyway.

If the Oracle-Sun deal goes through, MySQL will become more and more important. This will kill away more free-software databases such as Firebird and postgreSQL. And this will bring more head-ache to MSSQL. Check out top 10 comparison between MySQL and MSSQL.

Oracle is not going be become "free-software" or whatsoever. It now has a more distinct role which is to superior over MySQL; MySQL is never going to take over Oracle and both are brothers. SAP now has bigger problem with the ERP market because Oracle now has more resources to develop better competition in the ERP market.

If this deal suffered the Microsoft-Yahoo symptoms, then the backup plan is highlighted by SUN's CEO.
  1. Recruit every developer on earth to use our software or services --> Human
  2. Deliver the world's most compelling commercial offerings --> USP
  3. Execute the world's most effective selling/service connection between 1. and 2 --> Tools

Human, USP (Unique Selling Proposition) and Tools. Great!

BlogertizeWorld Can Help Bloggers With More Traffics Legally

Blogertizeworld.com is a hot startup.

It is meant to help bloggers (legally) where it allows bloggers to buy up advertising space and in return (advertisers) will get:
  • More traffics
  • Marketing & PR
  • E-Commerce Affiliation with 50% to 70% profit margin. Compare this to Amazon which only gives out 15% of sales commission.
  • Profit sharing
There is nothing illegal with leveraging on Blogertize to increase your web traffic because bloggers will have to invest for in return for bigger profits. This is the same as bloggers advertise in Adsense.

It shares some vision as Nuffnang and implements some idea from BlogShares.

Nuffnang leverages on blogs as publishers.

Blogertizeworld is still in beta and its interface is still pretty primitive.

It is important that bloggertizeworld must have a good platform to support the demanding dynamics of web-based business model, which may requires API for collaboration as well as continuous marketing.

Blogertizeworld should also look into leveraging Facebook and Twitter.

Have fun with Blogertizeworld.

And hopefully, Google doesn't not consider it a part of link schemes. Check out here for details.

Google is going against SEO.

Beware of Fraudulent SMS and Telephone Calls Requesting Confirmation on Credit Card Transactions

Check out the link (from Bank Negara)

I had similar experiences where some local women called me up and said that it is calling from some kind of "kad center". Later persuaded me to give out my credit card number which actually they already have it (they just pretend don't know it). In fact, the reason I comply because they know my full names and the intention was to get the CVV number. Then I suspected something and refused. I eventually went ahead to terminate my credit card.

From Bank Negara Malaysia 's investigations, the modus operandi of the scam is as follows:

  1. Victim receives SMS or telephone call: Requesting victim to confirm a credit card transaction for the purchase of goods or services purportedly charged to the victim's credit card.
  2. When victim calls the telephone number provided in the SMS, the fraudsters identify themselves as agents of a commercial bank, and again, ask the victim to confirm whether the credit card transaction had taken place.
  3. When victim informs the fraudster that he has no such credit card or transaction, the fraudster will start to sound concerned and will advise victim to lodge a report with Bank Negara Malaysia 's "Unit Kad Kredit Palsu", or with the commercial bank's "credit card management department". The fraudster will provide the victim with the telephone number for the "Unit Kad Kredit Palsu".
  4. When victim calls the telephone number provided, they are greeted by a automated voice message which identifies the company as Bank Negara Malaysia, and the call will then be answered by someone claiming to be a Bank Negara Malaysia officer. This officer will request for information relating to the victim's banking and credit card accounts under the pretense of lodging a complaint on behalf of the victim.
  5. The fraudsters now have sufficient information to illegally transfer funds out of the victim's bank account.

No-IP (DUC) Remote Desktop Connection

If you are using No-IP (DUC) for remote desktop connection to an internal server, you still need to establish port forwarding at the router even though the Firewall of the router is disabled.

This is because No-IP (DUC) will resolve the IP path up to the router's WAN IP. Therefore, the remote desktop packet will be stuck at the router if there is no port forwarding.

The port is 3389.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/rdfaq.mspx

Don't assume No-IP (DUC) to act like SKYPE or MSN which will be able to resolve all TCP/IP paths.

The same applies to any other applications such as remote connection to MSSQL and etc.

PageRank Dropped To Zero

The PageRank of IT-Sideways.com (which is parked on Google's blogspot) was 4/10 starting early of the year.

On 18 Mar 2009, it dropped from 4/10 to 2/10.

On 4 Apr 2009, it dropped from 2/10 to 0/10.

This blog is on its 6th year of running and we do the same thing over and over again. While the pagerank doesn't really affect anything, could this be some kind of sabotage?

Brandon Teoh (the main blogger) is not a main stream blogger. The blog itself is hosted on blogspot.

This blog has the intention of sharing knowledge and that is about it.

I hope IT-Sideways.com will not be disappeared from search engines some day.

But I want to commit to the people who benefited from my blogs that if that day come, all the contents will be moved to a new domain and the spirit will live on.Because the original intention is not about the PageRank, it is about contributing knowledge or content back to the Internet. The same way as I have benefited by using the Internet since the first day.
