Google Pagerank for www.it-sideways.com has creep back to 3/10 from 0/0.

It was in Apr 2009 which the pagerank became 0/0.

The highest Pagerank that www.it-sideways.com recorded was 5/10.

From Apr 2009 to the whole of 2010 til recently, it was 0/0.

But it was no hindrance to continuity and search engine availability. Thanks to the continuation efforts of posting and relevance to its mission.

This blog is 6 years 10 months old.

The lesson we learned here is that Pagerank is not everything and we cannot control it.

HP Technology Helps DreamWorks Animation High-kick “Kung Fu Panda 2” onto the Big Screen

HP and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. have united once again to create the studio’s action-packed 3-D film “Kung Fu Panda 2,” which hits theaters on May 26, 2011.

For ultimate performance, production artists at DreamWorks Animation relied on powerful HP Z800 Workstations to achieve industry firsts while designing everything from whirling water and lush green lands to battle scenes filled with thousands of kung fu characters.

For more than a decade, HP and DreamWorks Animation have worked side by side to create revolutionary technology that has helped craft eye-popping, heart-racing and awe-inspiring animation features like the “Shrek“ series, “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Megamind,” “Kung Fu Panda” and now “Kung Fu Panda 2.”

HP’s high-performance workstations have been fine-tuned to meet the detailed and demanding creative needs of DreamWorks Animation. The HP Z800 Workstations are radically faster – as much as 50 percent for some applications – than their predecessors and are the workstation of choice for several studios around the world. The additional high-speed Intel processing cores, memory and option drives enabled artists to effectively work on multiple shots concurrently and far more interactively than before.

“The creative ambition for ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ again pushed DreamWorks Animation to the cutting edge of technology. The film’s lead characters are some of the most intricate ever created and the environments are among the richest and most vibrant in CG filmmaking,” said Ed Leonard, chief technology officer, DreamWorks Animation. “HP technology continues to help us cross these new boundaries, develop new standards for the filmmaking industry and ultimately create enjoyable films for audiences around the world.”

The original “Kung Fu Panda” film, released in 2008, used more than 50 terabytes of data and required nearly 25 million render hours. With the switch to stereoscopic 3-D and the ever-escalating creative aspirations of the filmmakers, “Kung Fu Panda 2” used 100 terabytes of data and required more than 55 million render hours.

“HP is committed to bringing innovations to market that help customers like DreamWorks Animation unleash their creative genius,” said Jeff Wood, director, Worldwide Marketing, Workstations Global Business Unit, HP. “Working closely with industry leaders in film and animation inspires us to deliver top-performing technology that take their creations to the next level.”

“Kung Fu Panda 2” fun facts
  • Creative and technical advancements were required to produce the state-of-the-art character effects, like fur, feathers, cloth and armor, that fill the entire world of “Kung Fu Panda 2,” not just limiting visual richness to the main characters.
  • When a cannonball hits water in a key battle scene, a big splash is generated to emphasize the power of the impact. For the close-up shot, an FX artist used specialized, proprietary software to render the 10 million particles.
  • In the film, one of the wolves gets hit with 1,220 peaches, weighing a total of 457 pounds and travelling at 105 miles per hour. This is about the same energy force as getting hit by an automobile travelling at 45 miles per hour.
  • During the scene when the tower is destroyed, there are more than 50,000 splinters and small pieces of debris produced.
  • “Kung Fu Panda 2” is the first DreamWorks Animation film to use dynamic, physics-based crowd characters, such as the wolves. The wolves engage in a kung fu battle with Po and The Furious Five, and are able to dynamically react using a proprietary DreamWorks Animation kung fu physics simulation tool.
  • The final battle sequence of the film, which takes place in the harbor and canals of Gongmen City, is calculated to contain more than 60 million gallons of water. The scene required the most intensive computational graphics work of the film and more than 7 million render hours were consumed to produce 14,000 frames.

SOLARWINDS INTRODUCES USER DEVICE TRACKER (UDT) FOR COMPREHENSIVE SWITCH PORT MAPPING

SolarWinds® Inc., a leading provider of powerful and affordable IT management software, today announced the availability of its latest network management offering, SolarWinds User Device Tracker (UDT). Available as a standalone product or combined with other SolarWinds products, SolarWinds UDT helps network engineers and IT pros identify the current and past location of a network device.

With just an IP address, Hostname, or MAC address, SolarWinds UDT easily locates a device and retrieves the switch name, port, port description, VLAN, and more. Users can set up a notification alert for when a specific device connects to the network.

“UDT delivers the device-tracking and forensic history of an expensive switch port-tracking appliance at a much lower price point,” said Sanjay Castelino, SolarWinds’ VP Product Marketing and Product Management. “It also analyzes switch capacity, helping IT staff reclaim ports that are not being used and balance utilization among switches. This feature saves money in that it allows IT to avoid costly and unnecessary switch purchases.”

SolarWinds’ UDT provides network engineers with a powerful, affordable, easy-to-use switch port tracking solutions that enables instant access to connected device location. When combined with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor, users get one consistent user interface, plus an integrated alerting and reporting engine. With the user interface integration, users can customize their web interface to blend data from both products.

SolarWinds User Device Tracker Key Features:
  • Locate network devices, including confirmed rogue devices
    • Search with an IP address, Hostname, or MAC address
    • Confirm current location, location history of currently connected and unconnected devices, or add to watch list to be notified when device connects to network in the future
  • Display switch capacities
    • View individual ports per switch, reclaiming unused ports and avoiding unnecessary and expensive switch purchases
    • Discover switches operating near full capacity
  • Schedule automatic network discovery and device watch lists
    • Monitor new switches on your network immediately
    • Be notified the moment a specific device connects to the network, allowing you to respond immediately to network threats and events
Supporting Quotes

“In the past, you had to manually try to figure out where a MAC or IP address sits unless you invested in an expensive system. UDT helps me manage over one hundred VLANs that I used to need a spreadsheet to track,” said Don Click, Senior Infrastructure Manager, Denton County Technology Services. “If we had a virus-infected machine in the past, we wouldn’t have a clue where it is. Now we can type in the machine name and find it instantly. When we start doing network device inventory, UDT will save not just hours, but days of time.”

“The age-old question of what is running on your network has only gotten more complex over the years. Network devices are growing in number and diversity, and network monitoring and management can no longer be a passive activity,” said Jim Frey, Managing Research Director for Enterprise Management Associates. “Operators need tools that deliver the knowledge they need to take charge and make informed decisions fast. Products like the SolarWinds User Device Tracker help identify and locate devices on the network – wanted or unwanted – quickly and painlessly, and always up to date. That means better asset management as well as faster incident response – both big benefits for daily operations.”

eBworx Records RM11 Million Revenue in Q1FY2011

ACE-listed eBworx Berhad, a leading MSC-status banking application solution provider announces that its financial result for Q1FY2011 ended 31st March recorded a profit after tax (PAT) of RM2.6 million, on the back of RM11 million in revenue.

According to eBworx Group Chief Executive Officer, Tan Suan Fong this quarter's PAT of RM2.6 million is already equivalent to over half of the Group's entire PAT in FY2010, and almost 100 per cent of the PAT in FY2009.

"Based on the PAT achieved in just the first quarter of 2011, I am extremely confident that eBworx will overachieve its financial performance targets this year."

The Group remains at a strong financial position with a net cash flow of RM6 million generated from operating activities in Q1FY2011; as well as boosting its cash reserve to RM22.8 million. Meanwhile, its Earnings Per Share (EPS) now stands at RM1.20 (as compared to 0.75sen in Q1FY2010.)

Strong Demand for Credit Management; Internet & Mobile Banking Surge

Over the recent months, eBworx has infused significant developments into credit management and Internet & Mobile Banking solutions.

For its flagship credit management solution - the Loans Origination System (LOS), eBworx has developed the version for Islamic banking as well as the capability for almost instantaneous approval for consumer loans such as mortgage, hire purchase and credit card applications.

The demand for eBworx LOS is also in line with more banks wanting a credit management that is able to cater to their expansion plans throughout the region.

Meanwhile, eBworx also reports that its fastest growing segment to be Internet & Mobile Banking which includes consumer internet banking and transaction banking systems, with significantly increased orders from its clientele of regional Tier-1 banks. The company's resources are currently being deployed in several projects in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and China.

“The increased orders in Internet & mobile banking solutions are driven by the propagation of smart mobile devices. Banks urgently want to incorporate 'mobility' into their mainstream banking solutions, therefore they are urged to offer a more advanced platform that enable their customers perform more sophisticated banking transactions online, and on-the-go."

He says that eBworx has incorporated new technologies such as Web 2.0 and mobile versions for the iPhone, iPad and Google’s Android into its Internet & Mobile banking solutions.

Forward Statement

In the region, eBworx has by far the largest client base (of Tier-1 Banks) for credit management systems as compared to any other competitor - with its LOS credit management solution having received various industry recognition such APICTA (Asia Pacific ICT Alliance) and International Data Corp (IDC)’s FIIA (Financial Insights Innovation Awards) in 2009 and 2010 respectively

eBworx is preparing to embark on an aggressive growth in the banking industry by expanding its client base of LOS credit management throughout the region.

Tan shares that the internal (financial performance) target is to increase the Group’s total annual revenue by 30 per cent, and 60 per cent PAT by end of FY2011.

“Of this, Transaction, Internet & Mobile banking is expected to possibly contribute up to half of the year’s total revenue, as we continue to develop the widest and most effective possible mobile banking application to accommodate various mobile operating systems such as Google's Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Symbian and more,” he ends.

Brocade's Strategy To Enable Cloud Computing Adoption

We have known Brocade for being the core player in SAN switch, collaborating with other entities such as EMC for SAN storage devices.

For many years since it was first founded, Brocade core competencies were SAN networking technology and fibre channel technology, collectively considered to belong to data center technology.

In year 2008, Brocade acquired Foundry Networks to capitalize on its IP based network technology (Ethernet switches and routers).

With this acquisition, Brocade was able to move up the value chain by providing a complete set of networking technology from physical layer, networking layer up to application layer as determined by the OSI. It was a good move and Brocade's business progresses greatly thereafter.

Going back to its inception, Brocade has been market leader in terms of research and development of application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology as well as their own firmware known as Fabric OS running on its ASIC based chipset. This gives them industrial edge over competitors.

The current version of Fabric OS is Fabric OS 6.x which supports Virtual Fabrics-capable while for its ASIC chipset, it is GoldenEye 2.

According to Gina Tan (Director, Regional Sales South East Asia), Brocade was the first company in the industry to introduce cloud computing readiness for networking technology, namely its VCS technology.

Cloud computing is the biggest trend in the ICT industry as at for now.

Their biggest selling point and competency is Brocade Complete SP Solution;cloud ready from service provider CORE-TO-EDGE, which is targeting service providers such as telecommunication providers.

The idea is this.

From provider core to metro aggregation, deploy Brocade MLX Series with 100 GbE and 8X10 GbE.

From metro to access, deploy NetIron CER, NetIron CES and Brocade 6910.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_Ethernet

And if you are not a service provider, all you really need is to start with VDX 6720 Ethernet fabric switches to help you with step by step, seamless, hassle free, plug and play deployment for cloud optimized network adoption.

Brocade's strategy to help companies to adopt cloud optimized network lies in its Brocade One's CloudPlex Architecture; an open standard architecture for cloud optimized computer network architecture. The CloudPlex supports open standards such as OpenFlow and OpenStack. What this means is that if you are a CIO or network architect for data centers, be it private cloud, public cloud or hybrid cloud, you need to make a decision on the next step (direction), and hence you should consult CloudPlex.

In other words, Brocade is the leader and the guru for cloud optimized network and they know what is best. You should consult them for 'free'.

On Mar 2011, Brocade announced a $100 million evaluation program to assist enterprises with cloud optimized network adoption. This evaluation program will cover sample products, workshops, knowledgebase seminars around the APAC region.

The Changing of Media World

I was manually copying a news from The Sun (printed hard copy) newspaper about an extract on a business news.

Then I paused for a while to think about my stupidity as to why I have to do it since there should be other similar contents out there in the Internet, I just need to Google it. (Yes Google, not others). So, I went on to Google it and found many and checked on the first link and decided to go back to copy typing instead.

Why ? Because the the article printed on The Sun (printed hard copy) is much simpler, precise and shorter to read.

This triggers a thought about a few things on media, blogging and the Internet.

Almost majority of the contents out there are repetitive and they contain repetitive facts and figures.

Printed media can still strive on the art of writing and presentation of each authors of the articles, that is a fact. That is why, it is important that printed media's content must be more properly governed and presented. This gives its uniqueness.

When it comes to online media, everything is possible and accepted.

With the ability to copy and paste and better technology of semantic and pattern matching, it is no longer a necessity to present information (which are mostly repetitive) in a beautiful manner, since the information can also be found from other web sites or blogs right ?

So, the rise of smart phones and tablet PCs is definitely going to phase out printed media to a greater extend, coupled with the 'green' initiative to save the world, printed media needs to revise it strategy; I am not sure how. While the prices of smart phones and tablet PCs are still pretty much luxury in certain ways, there are still enough time for proper arrangement and settlement.

The characteristic of future media would definitely paint a less personality-oriented content world, where personal taste of words and style of writings are very likely going to be less appreciative and sidelined.

It may be possible that bloggers will become agents of first source of information and large media companies (with professional journalists) are going to become the content aggregator, providing analysts and submitting the well presented information to larger audience.

It is not happening now yet because the trend is not there yet, and probably such technology is still under R & D. However, I think the largest factor is when consumers control their own content aggregations, by having subscribed to software services which will aggregate information according to consumers' preferences and liking. In a way, this will be a challenge to media companies of losing target audience to so called software services.

This ushers the social media age.

Bloggers or independent content providers will need to focus on two things (to stay relevant):
  1. Producing breaking news contents
  2. Producing unique, localized or personalized contents as source
  3. Support technology platform standards for content aggregations.
Like it or not, the advertisement industry is very matured and saturated. Google is controlling a huge stake in the advertisement industry, and likewise, I think they are already getting ready for such scenario.

Bloggers in its smallest unit, are just going to become part of the ecosystem that feeds original content.

Media companies need to invest into technology, software team on top of its legions of journalists.

Nevertheless, I still have preference for printed news paper for different occasions especially when it it not related to business. Newspaper makes a good companion at places where having high tech gadgets is not recommended and also it can be used for cleaning the windows and for wrapping vegetable.

Microsoft Bought Skype For $8.5 bn

Microsoft bought Skype.

This is the deal I never anticipate will happen.

The quick fact is that Skype was bought by eBay in 2006 and then eBay sold it out(as in cutting lost) to a group of private investors in 2009 and then these investors sold it to Microsoft for US $8.5 billion.

Another report fact is that Skype made a lost of US $7 million for financial year 2010. It is hard to imagine that with so much talents and resources, business is still a challenge for them.

This proves that Microsoft is still go in terms of business, still has the money and is making money. At least they have US $8.5 billion.

Why Microsoft did it is pretty obvious, they want to own the VoIP software technology, it is purely software based it is good for Microsoft which doesn't have solid hardware based business.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer says that he is interested with the exploding number of users.

So what do we learn here ?

1.) If you can't make enough money, keep up the momentum of innovation and acquiring users.

2.) Microsoft didn't have the time to build similar version of Skype even though it already have MSN live. US $8.5 bn is much cheaper to do that. More importantly, it is the users and the brand which is more critical.

Brocade - The Optimized Cloud Data Center Solutions Provider

Brocade's VCS technology is designed to cater for cloud optimized data center solution.

The VCS technology consists of three components namely: Etherenet Fabric, Distributed Intelligence and Logical Chasis.

With the world talking about going cloud computing, data centers must adopt cloud computing optimized networking technology to cater for the needs.

Ok, let's go back to the basic again.

The concept of cloud computing is about virtualization.

Virtualization will give rise to scalability.

Scalability will give rise to plug and play.

Plug and play gives rise to on-demand.

And with on-demand, consumers get the benefits of cost optimization.

Thus, conventional networking solution for data center will not be able to support cloud computing well since cloud computing premises on the idea of virtualization. It can still be done but it will be less effective and less efficient.

The core idea of VCS technology for cloud optimized networks is that the network is now more software oriented than hardware oriented. By all means, this introduces the concept of platforms, intelligence and automated, ubiquitous and scalability which are now coined as Ethernet fabric.

Brocade markets the idea to data center owners, which have 5 categories
  1. Custom private cloud owners
  2. Managed private cloud owners
  3. Virtual private cloud owners
  4. Community public cloud providers
  5. Public cloud providers

Brocade's VCS technology Ethernet Fabric component represents the data plane, the Distributed Intelligence component represents the control plane while the logical Chassis Component represents the management plane.

How to deploy ? Using Brocade VDX 6720 Data Center Switch; Ethernet fabric switch which supports Brocade VCS technology and conventional ethernet switches. Thus, it forms the bridge between legacy Ethernet networks and Ethernet fabrics.

Brocade targets five market segments namely service providers, health care, government, manufacturing and higher education.
