Not all heroes wear capes in today’s digital economy

By Matthew Johnston, Area Vice President, ASEAN & Korea, Commvault

Imagine a reality where darkness cloaks the world. Where backstreet alleys are the latest setting for the depths of sophisticated crime; where lives of innocents are under threat, and evil threatens to triumph over good. In today’s digital reality, this is not far from the truth.

For organizations today, a single catastrophe may spell disaster for the unprepared. Data breaches are estimated to cost a business US$4 million, on average – hardly a nominal amount . Take the recent WannaCry and Petya/GoldenEye attacks as cases in point, they were wake-up calls for the unprotected, to the tune of $1 billion in damages and counting just for the WannaCry incident alone.

Managing data in today’s digital economy is no mean feat. To stay vigilant and to navigate the treacherous cyber landscape, organizations need to understand the value of their data, wherever they reside, to stay agile, compliant, secure and competitive. But, what if, we all had a superhero, bearing the latest cape or iron suit, to save the day?

Our everyday superheroes might not look as good as Clark Kent, but their mission remains the same – to know and use data for strategic decision making. And what of the qualities of our seemly unlikely hero? They’re not that different from our fictional comic book heroes – strength, perception and dexterity.

MediaMath at ATS Singapore 2017

Jul 13, 2017 - SG :

Speaking on the opening panel at ATS Singapore 2017 last week, Rahul Vasudev, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, MediaMath, reiterated the importance of education to empower marketers in the region with the ability to focus on business outcomes that are truly relevant to them.

Rahul Vasudev Speaking at the Forum

To address this, MediaMath launched the Asia Pacific (APAC) hub of the New Marketing Institute (NMI), the company’s own education and training arm, to advance programmatic know-how in the region and train aspiring marketers to embrace programmatic techniques and technologies. Rahul commented, “With technology constantly evolving, marketers need to be aware of the various solutions available to them – and more importantly, how they can use them to create value. We believe that programmatic technology is a complimentary tool that marketers should leverage to help focus on what their customers want and help them deliver true business outcomes. With the advancement in programmatic technology, we are moving towards that sweet spot one step at a time.”

He further elaborated how the course modules at NMI not only focus on basic programmatic knowledge, but are also on content relevant for the modern, advanced marketer. “We need to help the marketers understand each stage of the consumer’s journey, down to the level of what consumers are actually purchasing and their individual preferences, instead of relying on increasingly irrelevant media metrics. The NMI courses focused on marketers, helps guide the way towards that end.”

Kaspersky Lab connects cyber-attack on South Korean military with ATM theft – possible tie to Lazarus

Jul 10, 2017:

Following a detailed malware analysis, Kaspersky Lab researchers have connected a 2016 cyberespionage attack on South Korea’s defense agency with a later attack that infected 60 ATMs and stole the data from over 2,000 credit cards. Further, the malicious code and techniques used in both attacks share similarities with earlier attacks widely attributed to the infamous Lazarus group, responsible for series of devastating attacks against commercial and government organizations around the world.

In August 2016, a cyberattack on South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense infected around 3,000 hosts. The Defense Agency reported (Korean) the incident publically in December 2016, admitting that some confidential information could have been exposed.

Six months later, at least 60 ATMs in South Korea, managed by a single local vendor, were compromised with malware. The incident was reported (Korean) by the Financial Security Institute and, according to the Financial Supervisory Service, resulted in the theft of the details of 2,500 financial cards and the illegal withdrawal in Taiwan of approximately 2,500 USD from these accounts. Kaspersky Lab researched the malware used in the ATM incident and discovered that the machines were attacked with the same malicious code used to hit the Korean Ministry of National Defense in August 2016.

Facebook takes next steps to addressing link preview modification and combat fake news

Jul 18, 2017:

As part of Facebook’s continuing efforts to stop the spread of misinformation and false news on its platform, starting today non-publisher Pages will no longer be able to overwrite link metadata (i.e. headline, description, image) in the Graph API or in Page composer.

This will help eliminate a channel that has been abused to post false news, following the announcement of the removal of the ability to customize link metadata during an update last month. Impacted Pages can still program and preview how their link attachments will appear on Facebook using Open Graph tags and the Sharing Debugger.

Facebook also released a solution to support publishers who rely on overwriting link preview metadata to customize how their content appears to audiences on Facebook. A tab was introduced in Page Publishing Tools for publishers to indicate link ownership and continue editing how their own links appear on Facebook.

Kaspersky Lab Researcher Creates Free Software Tool for Collecting Remote Evidence After Cyber-Attacks

Jul 7, 2017:

To overcome the need for investigators to travel far and wide to gather evidence from infected computers after a cyberattack, a Kaspersky Lab expert has developed a simple tool that can remotely collect vital data without risk of its contamination or loss. Named BitScout, the tool can build a swiss-army knife for the remote forensic investigation of live systems and has been made freely available for all investigators to use.

Vitaly Kamluk, Director of Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research and Analysis Team in Asia Pacific (APAC) has created an open-source digital tool that can remotely collect key forensic materials, acquire full disk images via the network or locally attached storage, or simply remotely assist in malware incident handling. Evidence data can be viewed and analyzed remotely or locally while the source data storage remains intact through reliable container-based isolation.

The list of BitScout features includes:
  • Disk image acquisition even with un-trained staff
  • Training people on the go (shared view-only terminal session)
  • Transferring complex pieces of data to your lab for deeper inspection
  • Remote Yara or AV scanning of offline systems (essential against rootkits)
  • Search and view registry keys (autoruns, services, plugged USB devices)
  • Remote file carving (recovering deleted files)
  • Remediation of the remote system if access is authorized by the owner
  • Remote scanning of other network nodes (useful for remote incident response)
The tool is freely available at the GitHub code repository:

Autonomous Driving on the BMW Group Way

As a software developer aiming to make my marks in the global market, appreciating future technology trends is key to staying afloat; failing, I would have long drown myself in the sea of development issues, limitations and technology deprecation - I would have left the industry long ago.

Thus, we are here to explore one such future trend - the autonomous driving of consumer vehicles - the facts presented here are based on a press release from BMW group.

As early as 2006, autonomous driving technology has been deployed onto BMW 3 Series and tests were conducted by it lapping the circuit at Hockenheim (Germany) - by 2011, road tests on the A9 motorway between Munich and Nuremberg were conducted.

By 2014, 360° environmental sensing technology deployment enabled prototypes the ability to avoid accidents.

Recently, at 2016 CES, BMW group presented the Automated Gesture Control Parking in the BMW i3.

Windows has detected an IP address conflict

If you are using fixed IP, then high chances are that two PCs were set to the same IP.

However, if you are using dynamic IP, the following describes a scenario for it.

There are two WiFi networks in the environment.

1.) PC-1 connected to Network-1 and received IP-1
2.) PC-2 connected to Network-2 and received IP-2
3.) Network-1 restarted
4.) PC-2 restarted
5.) PC-1 connected to Network-2 and received IP-3
6.) PC-2 connected to Network-1 and received IP-1
7.) PC-1 disconnected from Network-2 and connected to Network-1 and received IP-1 because it didn't restart itself --> IP conflict detected.

The solution is to disconnect PC-1 from Network-1 and reconnect again.

Note : It is not always true that this happens because someone is trying to hack you by mimicking the IP address of your PC - especially if you are home alone connected to your own routers.
