My Idea On Creating An Earthing For Home Based Broadband Network

Just recently, my PC at home was damaged due to lightning surge.

In fact, it wasn't the first time lightning ever strike and spoiled computer stuffs in my house.

Usually, if the modem or router is connected to the telephone line and when lightning happens, the device will be spoiled. In this case, the device is usually turned off.

However, what happened that day was that the router is turned on and the telephone line is connected and then lightning strike. It caused a sudden surge in electricity which was evident from sudden dim in the lamps.

My poor PC which has the network cable connected to the same router was damaged.

The first thing I noticed was the network card totally failed. Windows XP couldn't detect it and then a few minutes later, the death blue screen. And the system had to restart and then the same thing happened again. This is a symptom of motherboard damage.

The fact is that the network card is built-in to the motherboard, so that explains. From network card to mother board, it was 'grounded'.

So, I figure that had the network cable not connected to the PC, it will not become a conductor for earthing. Then maybe the router would have been spoiled.

So, my idea is that why not in the future, I should just get a spoiled network card and connect it to the router via a network cable to serve as 'earth'. This will be a DIY lightning protection system for Malaysia home based broadband network. Check out here for more ideas.

Then, I can surf the Internet even during lightning strike. Please don't do that, maybe just for emergency.

But please try to turn off all electronics devices during heavy thunderstorm. Based on this experience, you may even have to pull out the power plug. However, usually lightning surge happens originated from the telephone cable; in Malaysia household.

Information Revolution Free Flow Ending

At my age, I have lived through 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s.

The Internet came to my life at about year 1999, during the time I was at college. In fact, Internet came to my generation at year 1994 while I was form 4. Me and my family wasn't the first adopter of the 56 kbps Internet connection, but I do know a few friends who did.

Those were the days.

The Internet changed a lot of things, crazy. It was all started by Yahoo, ICQ and then Google. Not to forget those days heroes like Catcha, Alta vista, Hotmail, MiRC and etc. I can't actually remember much. Yahoo was really a very deep impression and Google really came during my college years.

During those days, if whoever can search and archive information quickly and efficiently will be king. Particularly before the Internet age and even during the early days of Internet, that is how Google become important.

Today at 2010, things are a little bit more different. Even though search engine technologies are still considered to be infant stage as claimed by some experts which include Marissa Mayer of Google, no longer one will live king's life by having ability to search and archive information. Things are getting easier and more automated.

In fact, pretty soon, we don't even need to search and archive, it will be 'by default' or 'built-in' somewhere. So, this is what I see it is coming.

We are at a stage where the world has pretty much plenty of information contributors and the tools are getting better to discover such contributed information and even to verify it. Thus, contributors of information are actually not King because for the same topic, readers have the option to choose from many different contributions (different writers).

In this manner, the King is the technology (information technology). Nevertheless, such technology is still not yet sophisticated enough and having rooms for improvements. However, at the pace of technology innovation (particularly software), we are getting to a boiling point.

And when we reached there, information contributors will become King again because the technology has matured. Everybody can search, can archive, can audit and analyse, what we need more are individualistic and emotional contents; something different, daring and real.

Let's take one example.

Information about Ananda Krishan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ananda_Krishnan

When technology matures, there is no doubt that we will not know anything about 'Usaha Tegas Sdn. Bhd.', not due to missing hyperlinks, information misplaced or data lost. If it is there, you will find it.

But we need someone to contribute to it, we need a writer to write about it.

Today, there seems to be not much information about it, there is not even official website.

If someone decided to research and write something about 'Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd', he or she will not gain the crown yet because people are busy with reading other more popular contents, so your contribution will be ignored.

However, when the technology matures, your contribution will be king because we can always read other popular information later because it will be there. But we are more concern about what information that is not yet there.

The 'ending' is referring to where it ends to start a new beginning.

Juniper Networks Positioned in Leaders Quadrant of Leading Analyst Firm’s Network Access Control Magic Quadrant

Juniper Networks® announced it has been positioned in the “Leaders” quadrant of Gartner’s recently published Magic Quadrant for Network Access Control.1 A leading worldwide IT research and advisory firm, Gartner evaluated vendors based on the company’s ability to execute and completeness of vision in the Network Access Control market.

“Juniper understands that reliable, easy, and secure access - from anywhere - to the data and applications that drive a business is amongst the highest priority of all IT and security managers. The diversity of the types of users and the types of devices corporations are trying to enable to connect is also increasing and this creates numerous challenges,” said Sanjay Beri, vice president and general manager of the Access and Acceleration Business Unit at Juniper Networks. “We believe Juniper’s positioning in the Leaders quadrant for our UAC product line reflects our ability to solve these network, data and application access needs. It is the combination of our granular and flexible policy management and enforcement, and a strong belief in open standards and support for intelligent, dynamic and scalable heterogeneous networks, that allows UAC and the Juniper portfolio to deliver robust network security and investment protection.”

Lifestyle ... My Lifestyle Is Important

My lifestyle is pretty much Malaysian based.

Things like ..
  • Email
  • Facebook
  • Youtube
  • Blogs
  • MSN (IM)
  • News
These are some activities which I will perform mostly daily, of course all these are digital oriented.

And I do want to suggest that on top of all these, having enough time (for everything) as in striking balance between work and leisure is of utmost important.

So, another element of my lifestyle is perform scheduling.

Other Malaysian oriented lifestyles which I haven't adopted are:
  • iPhone/iPod
  • Wii/PS3/Xbox
  • 3G/4G/Mobile Internet
  • Making videos of myself and post it on YouTube
  • What else ?

MSSQL 2005 Express More Than 4 GB But Still Running

By right, MSSQL 2005 Express edition only allows a maximum of database size 4 GB. Refer to here.

However, I have a scenario where even it shows more than 4 GB but it is still workable.

So, how to check for the actual 'MSSQL database size' ?

You can actually use the store procedure called 'sp_spaceused'

For my scenario...

You can see that 'database_size' indicator is showing 4.66613 GB. Right ?

However, it is still able to work (able to store data).

So, if the limitation of 4 GB is real (which no one can really confirm), then it is not referring to the 'database_size' indicator if you are querying using stored procedure 'sp_spaceused'.

Instead, my scenario suggests that the 4GB should be the 'data' indicator; 'Total amount of space used by data'. As you can see, the 'data' indicator shows only 2.73 GB, which I think explains why it is still working.

Therefore, if you want to know when will your MSSQL 2005 Express edition's database going to trigger the 'panic' exception, you need to use 'sp_spaceused' to check the 'data' indicator instead of using the property screen which only shows 'size' which is the 'database_size' and 'size' which is the 'unallocated space'.

And when your MSSQL 2005 Express edition really reaches 4GB limitation, do let me know.

Refer to 'MSSQL 2005 Express Database Size (Observation #1)'

Tips fo Graphic Designer Job Application

My business partners requested me to do resumes filtering.

Here are my tips for applicants.

Graphic designer is a kind of job based on creativity, emotions and inspirations.

It is hard to have black and white requirements.

Thus since there is no black and white requirements for matching, I will have to choose based on elaborated experiences. Try to elaborate more.

By just mentioning Adobe Photoshop skills and etc is not good enough. This is because you are expected to know anyway.

Write more stories and your inspirations.

Do not write irrelevant stuffs like working as sales promoter. You can tell this in the interview which will definitely help. Just don't black and white it.

If you do not have direct experience, try to elaborate on your dreams, visions, inspirations and goals in the industry.

Students should try to do more freelance works.

Describe your works done and challenges faced and how you solved them.

Publish your works done somewhere so that you can share it out as web links.

These are what I am NOT particularly pay attention to:
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Your expected to have skills (like Adobe photoshop, illustrator)
  • Your institution (school)

SAS Forum Malaysia 2010 (Analytics Now)

In conjunction with SAS Forum Malaysia 2010.

Professor Thomas Davenport, who is known as The Guru of Analytics in the field of business analytics explained analytics in one sentence.

"You have all those data, what you going to do next ?"

This is the origin of business analytics; used to be known as business intelligence.

Professor Davenport has authored 12 books and is currently lecturing MBA students about entrepreneur decision makings.

He pointed out that even big guys suffered potentially doubtful decision makings, cases which include:
  • USA military invasion of Cuba.
  • USA military invasion of Iraq.
  • Yahoo opted not to sell to Microsoft
  • BP oil spills.
According to him, to make good decisions, you got to remove emotions. The analytic maturity model presents a way to measure companies.
  • Level - 5 : Analytics Competitors
  • Level - 4 : Analytics Companies --> Having the assets
  • Level - 3: Analytics Aspirators --> Understood the benefits
  • Level - 2: Analytics Localized --> No communication
  • Level - 1 Analytics Impaired --> No analytics at all.
Procter & Gamble is classified as level-4 because they have the assets (data, technology) but just not passionate about it. It is not their culture to rely on business analytics for decision making. For companies with level-5 maturity, Professor Davenport named a few such as:
  • Marriot - on revenue management
  • UPS - on operations and logistics
  • CIMB - on risks, credit scoring, pricing.
  • Harrah's - on loyalty and services
  • Tesco - on loyalty and internet groceries
  • 'CreditCorp' - on debt collections
  • 'CapitalOne' - on Information based strategy
  • Google - on Page rank, advertising and HR
  • ISM - on analytics services
To go up the maturity level, the framework to follow is DELTA model.
  • D = Data
  • E = Enterprise (enterprise level - interconnected)
  • L = Leadership
  • T = Targets(goals)
  • A = Analyst (people)
Check out the slides from Professor Davenport on 'Competing on Analytics'

The senior VP of Mahindra Satyam Mr. Venkat Narayanan (based on Singapore) explains that using SAS iDesicion framework, a project implementation gets a booster of 30% to 40% of delivery time, with just another 70% to 60% of customization. Mr. Venkat quoted one real customer from the insurance financial industry who faced challenges of open competitions and high turnover of agents (90% per annum).

The customer (which is based in India) was looking for solution which will allow the followings:
  1. Customer value management
  2. Single view of customer
They needed analysis in order to architect the following key drivers.
  1. Maintain agents
  2. Reduce orphan customers
  3. Maximize cross selling
And with implementation of business analytics solution using SAS technology, the project is a success story. One of the key success factor is the way ROI (return on investment) was being agreed upon. According to Mr. Venkat, customer only have to pay a minimal upfront fee to get the solution deployed and pay the rest based on success rates. He didn't elaborate further.

Finally, speaker from HP Ms. Betty Lau shared with the audience how HP embraces business analytics (using SAS technology) internally to help with their business.

It was a vision from current CEO Mr. Mark Hurd, who is known for his cost-cutting management skills which worked.

The idea is to have a single source of information for the whole enterprise of HP so to speak and it took them 3 to 4 years to achieve such marvel.

Today, the 'center of excellence' is the 'command center' for HP which will oversee the heart beat of the single source of information. It comes handy for
  1. Trends seeking
  2. Planning
  3. Optimization
Which in turn, gives rise to
  1. Accelerate growth
  2. Mitigate risks
  3. Lower costs
Ms. Betty elaborated more that in terms of business functions, business analytics are used for the following scenarios.
  1. Marketing - Product association analysis
  2. Enterprise - Loyalty drivers analysis
  3. Finance - Spend reporting analysis
  4. Procurement - Quality and warranty analysis
The best part is the starting quote from Ms. Betty that "using business analytics tools, one do not have to make decision based on intuition".

HP also provides business analytics professional services.

SAS is the no.1 in the business of business analytics, followed by IBM and Microsoft.

Premier Media Group Chooses Juniper Networks Switching and Routing Solutions to Support FOX SPORTS HD TV

Juniper Networks®  announced that Premier Media Group (PMG), Australia’s leading sports producer and broadcaster, has deployed a “new network” running the Junos® operating system to increase program quality and deliver more high-definition content to its FOX SPORTS customers. Juniper Networks EX4200 Ethernet Switches installed in PMG’s mobile production units and MX240 Universal Edge Routers located at its production center support high-capacity, low-latency IP connections that reduce transmission costs and enable back-end production processes to be streamlined.

PMG’s FOX SPORTS broadcasts an average of 20 hours of live sports per day to 2.2 million Australian homes through the FOXTEL, AUSTAR and Optus subscription television services. High-definition production places heavy demands on contribution and production networks, which prompted PMG’s move from point-to-point satellite links to a high-performance virtual private network, with Gigabit Ethernet fibre links, for transmitting live video footage from 16 major stadia around the country.

SAS Forum Malaysia 2010 (Power365 - Rise Above Challenges)

The Chong Sisters; Pamela and Vanessa Chong was crowned 1st runner for The Amazing Race Asia Two (TARA 2).

It wasn't all that rosy so to speak, only 10 teams were selected to participate out of so many entries (2,500) and they rose to the first challenge of creating a video (as part of the entry requirement) about how they were preparing and sacrificing for the race.

It worked.

Coming from a tough background with 6 siblings (4 boys and 2 girls), the 2 girls had to tough-up in order to fair with the boys.

It was during that particular moment which they jumped at the opportunity of joining the competition, totally unprepared for mentally and physically.

During the first day of the competition, they felt intimated by other competitors for their apparent bigger size.

They admitted that being physically not that fit (during the time of the competition), they figured out strategies to deal with otherwise. Their first step was to not be eliminated from the first round and it worked.

Working together as a team, utilizing one's strengths and complementing each other weaknesses, they overcome all challenges and road-blocks to emerge the 1st runner up.

Teressa and Pamela had to make decisions based on intuitions because the race didn't permit usage of gadgets and even not having more money to spend for.

It is all about team work, strategies and the will to go on. These are the qualities which makes them the icon for the SAS Forum 2010 - Rise Up To Challenges.

They quoted that by the next morning, you have to get up and race again.

And this is exactly what is happening in today's economy of businesses.

Things are tough, consumers got smarter because they have access to Internet. No longer can you tell them that 'Paul The Octopus' is just a hype because consumers can use Google to search for it and worst still - for free.

In terms of dealing with competitors, they are always keen to follow your success stories and can always come up with better surprises. Never will you have a day to enjoy your slightest achievement because it is much wiser to save for raining days tomorrow.

Damn, so what else can you sell to your consumers if you are not amongst the best in the world ?

At least SAS is the number 1 in the world for business analytics, followed by IBM and Microsoft. But the point is that SAS is a company which provides software tools for businesses to rise up to challenges, 365 days and round the clock.

Using SAS tools, businesses get to have their own 'Paul The Octopus'; where one can actually predict trends, mitigate risks, planning and engineer growth.

SAS Malaysia Managing Director Mr. Jimmy Cheah mentioned that businesses today need to buckle up for extremity as in extreme sports. The three points of focus are:
  • Speed (in a matter of hours)
  • Agility
  • Risks
The worst part is that what if all these three combination changes in a matter of hours ? --> Looks like it pays more to actually think about it more.

SAS Forum is an annual event and this year it was hosted by The Chong Sisters and the best part is that the house was full. Mr. Jimmy Cheah called it PAU PANG ( full house in Cantonese).

I was lucky and honoured to be given a VIP seat.

The PAU PANG crowd simply loved the show, started off with motorbike stunt by Mr. Jimmy Cheah himself, followed by visions lecture from Professor Thomas Davenport (Guru of Analytics) and then The Chong Sisters who wooed the crowd with their Malaysian elegance, charm, intelligence and down to earth nature.

It was a great event and I would like to end this with a quote from speaker Ms. Betty Lau (HP).

"Using business analytics tools, one do not have to make decisions based on intuition"

That is so contributing because intuition is based on emotions and insights, and as human, we fall in love with that because it is about feelings and cater for meanings. In other words, humans tend to make mistakes because we are so forgiving.

However, with business analytics, you have the choice of not making foolish mistakes in terms of decision making and that is such a blessing if you are talking about loving and caring for your business.

With or without emotions ?

--> I wrote this with emotions. You make your own choices.

Open Web Asia 2010 (Kuala Lumpur)

The Open Web Asia is to be held on 13 - 14 July 2010.

I am not attending. However, I would love to know what they will be discussing because event like this is a good way for us to know what is happening around us on web technology evolution and trends.

So, I figure that the only cut that I can get from it is to know what the speakers are going to talk about. Thank god that they published the schedules (Day 1 and Day 2).

The followings are topics to be discussed.
  1. Funding
  2. Digital Media
  3. Cloud Computing
  4. Youth
  5. Mash-Up
  6. Agile and High speed development
  7. Social Web
  8. iPhone
  9. India Web Enterprise
  10. Android
  11. HTML5
  12. Location Based Application
  13. Geo-Location Services
  14. Business Challenges, Issues and Society

Looks pretty neat, looks within our control, and nothing really explosive.

But if you have time, should attend it.

Traffic Jam Buster - For New Normal Lifestyle

This is my idea on resolving traffic jam problems around us.

I have submitted this as an entry to MyPrize for 'idea' category.

Basically, my idea that the traffic is so jam because there are just too many cars on the road than expected.

And since implementing car pooling is not as easy as we hope to be (due to security and other issues), I have thought that another good way is for us to not living the convention standard of having Saturday and Sunday as the common public holiday, so that if Monday to Friday have at lot of traffic congestions, we need to take some of these cars and put it to Saturday and Sunday.

In other words, why not some people work on Saturday and Sunday voluntarily ?

However, sometimes it may not be possible to do that, so each of us got to take turns. (Sometimes you really need to take Sunday off).

And we can't just rely on our own scheduling system to randomly decide which day we wanted as replacement for Saturday and Sunday, because our decisions may affect other parties such as family, friends, colleagues, customers and etc.

Thus, we need a system which will help to resolve all scheduling conflicts amongst our social networks and recommends the best options for us.

Check out the write-up for more details.

And do vote for me if you agree to it.

SingTel Uses Juniper Networks EX4200 Switches for its Carrier Ethernet Services

Juniper Networks® announced that Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel), one of Asia Pacific’s leading communications group, is using Juniper’s high-performance, high-availability Ethernet switching solutions to support its customers’ Carrier Ethernet requirements. SingTel has deployed Juniper Networks EX4200 Ethernet Switches, which run the Junos® operating system, at points-of-presence (POP) across the region.

SingTel is the service provider of choice for the quality of its MEF-certified Carrier Ethernet suite which includes market leading international services such as ConnectPlus Ethernet Line (E-Line), ConnectPlus Ethernet Virtual Private Network (E-VPN), ConnectPlus Ethernet Virtual Private Line (E-VPL) and superior local services such as MetroEthernet and Meg@POP suite of Ethernet services including E-VPN and E-VPL.

“SingTel works with top-tier industry vendors, such as Juniper Networks, to ensure our customers enjoy superior performance, scalability and reliability for their mission-critical applications. Through our suite of Carrier Ethernet services, we are committed to providing innovative solutions of the highest quality that guarantee outstanding end-to-end service between countries, regions and continents,” said Goh Boon Huat, Head of Business Products at SingTel.

SingTel continues to grow and innovate its Carrier Ethernet services, not only in global coverage, but also to meet customers’ demand for value-adding features such as Jumbo Ethernet frame support. To accomplish this, Juniper’s Virtual Chassis fabric technology on the EX4200 switches can enable up to 10 interconnected switches to operate as a single, logical device, allowing for increased capacity with reduced complexity.

Juniper Networks EX Series Ethernet Switches leverage much of the same field-proven Juniper Networks technology—including high-performance application-specific integrated circuits, system architecture and Junos OS—that power the world’s largest service provider networks. The highly-scalable pay-as-you-grow architecture of the EX4200 switches with Virtual Chassis fabric technology provides lower power consumption, space and associated cooling requirements.

“Juniper’s EX4200 Ethernet Switches allow SingTel to scale its market leading Carrier Ethernet services without overwhelming complexity and loss of performance,” said Wendy Koh, Vice President of Juniper Networks ASEAN . “In addition to enabling SingTel to remain in compliance with the most stringent service-level agreements, Juniper’s high-performance networking increases the speed and lowers the cost of application and service deployment.”

In addition to deploying the Junos OS across the EX switches, SingTel also deploys Juniper Networks M Series Multiservice Edge Routers in its POPs.

XFunD - Extra Fund Deals

I have thought about this idea about 2 years ago.

It is called XFunD - Extra Fun Deals.
