Mobile Tech Finance App: the Perfect Storm to Change Financial Behaviors

By MoneyHero.

Not so long ago, the FDIC National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households reported that more than a quarter of U.S. households are underserved by mainstream financial services. 20 percent are underbanked, which meant that they had a checking or savings account, but also rely on alternative financial services for their other banking needs. A whopping eight percent do not use traditional banking methods at all.

The Growth of Mobile Banking

The industry, however, seems to have hit upon a solution, something that is already in virtually everyone’s hands: smartphones. Recent years have seen a plethora of mobile banking apps on the rise.

This problem has turned into an opportunity for mobile telecommunications operators: along with financial services, they are now offering auxiliary aid such as health care and education. It seems to be the logical solution since everything on the Internet has already migrated to mobile.

Emerging markets, especially, are fertile grounds: formal banking has only reached 37 percent of the population, in contrast to 50 percent penetration for mobile phones.

Lazada: E-Commerce taking off in SEA

By Lazada

Internet and e-commerce in Southeast Asia has indicated tremendous growth potential in recent years and the region has remained a favourite investment among global e-commerce players. E-commerce investments have given birth to a myriad of online retail environments ranging from competitive marketplace models to daily deal or flash sale sites. German startup incubator, Rocket Internet, for example, launched range of web start-ups in early 2012. So far, these earned a huge presence in the emerging Southeast Asian market, benefiting from the rapidly increasing online population.

The Southeast Asian online population is estimated to be around 205 million users by 2016 (a huge increase from 118 million in 2011) of which most of them fall under the “Big 6” Southeast Asian countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam). Rapid internet proliferation has spurred an internet shopping phenomenon among the rapidly growing middle class seeking a vast assortment of competitively priced products. The huge sales during Lazada’s Online Revolution on the 12th of December, a campaign inspired by America’s Black Friday and China’s Singles day, where entered into a range of partnership to promote and offer great product offers to its customers clearly indicates that Southeast Asian markets are ready for online shopping. As demonstrated below, Lazada almost doubled its traffic during this campaign.

Tefal Introduces The most Steamy Electrical Ironing Technology

Something interesting... I never thought an electrical iron would make the case for IT related news quite so soon.

Tefal, the world’s leading cookware and small home appliances maker introduces the fastest and most efficient ironing technology with the Tefal Pro Express® Total Auto Control GV8960 appliance.

This new steam station is fitted with Tefal’s latest innovation, the Smart Technology Auto Control, which allows users to have the perfect combination of temperature and steam that will best suit each type of textile in just one touch. By simply pushing one of three buttons, the appliance will automatically adjust to iron all kinds of fabrics: delicate, normal or tough.

Smart Technology Auto Control
Since every type of textile is different, each of the three settings provides the right combination of temperature and steam, with extreme accuracy and increased precision for fast and perfect results.

The Tefal Pro Express® Total Auto Control GV8960 boasts superior steam performance with a powerful 6 bars pressure for efficient steam penetration into the heart of the fabrics. The ‘Maximum’ position aimed for high steam output is up to 120g per minute catered to ironing tough materials such as jeans. The ‘Power Zone’ steam function produces up to 340g per minute of steam perfect for ironing heavy fabrics.

Creating a robotic car using Netduino controller (Windows Platform)

http://blog.roguecode.co.za/Windows-Phone-controlled-car-with-Netduino-and-Bluetooth

This project explores creation of Bluetooth controlled car using a Netduino controller and a Windows Phone as a remote control - to scare away rodents in the house.

Netduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on the .NET Micro Framework. It uses a 32-bit ARM-microcontroller.

Core components of the project:

Component diagram

1.) The motor driver module (order online)- to power the motor actuators

2.) Serial bluetooth module (order online)- connects to Netduino controller on 3V3 and GND pins

3.) The Netduino controller (any model, or online) - serves as motherboard and the brain - programming of firmware is required.

4.) The firmware is written in c# and to be deployed to the Netduino controller.

Create a Micro Framework project from Visual Studio - after you have installed the Netduino SDK, a Netduino Application template should be made available under Visual Studio.

The main function of the firmware is to accept commands from the external controller - a windows phone - the commands consist of direction of the motors, speed of left motor, speed of right motor.

The second core function of the firmware is to support communication between the windows phone and the controller via Bluetooth - via socket.

http://blog.roguecode.co.za/Post/ControllingaNetduinooverBluetoothwithWP8

For first time Netduino coder, check out the following tutorial.

http://www.netduino.com/downloads/books/gsn/Getting_Started_with_Netduino_Sampler.pdf

5.) The Windows phone will run a standard Windows Phone 8 application.

As the author pointed out, the most challenging part of the code is to work out the speeds of each motor based on how much it is turning - this requires some theory on Physics.

"The way I have done it is that when turning left, the left motor will always be 100%, but the more left they turn, the slower the right motor will turn. So moving the thumbstick 20% left will set the left motor at 100% and the right motor at 80%. Moving the thumbstick 70% left will set the left motor at 100% and the right motor at 30%."

Appzilo.com Helps Advertisers Promote Apps with Smart App Banners

Press Release - Feb 12, 2014

Appzilo.com today announced the launch of a new ad network for apps that promises to increase revenue for publishers while providing a more effective way for advertisers to promote apps.

The platform debuts with the VIVA ad unit, which uses the Smart App Banner for promoting apps. Smart App Banners was originally introduced by Apple in iOS 6 and is basically a small and consistent app banner that is displayed on top of website. The banner provides a way for publishers to convert their website visitors to use their apps. If the app is not installed on users' device, clicking on the Smart App Banner opens up the App Store app page. If the app is installed, clicking on it will launch the app.

“Once the user installs the app, the banner basically becomes useless. Appzilo’s VIVA ad unit extends the functionality of the smart app banners by using the space to promote other apps after the user installs the website’s app. This offers incremental revenue for publishers and excellent visibility for app advertisers.“ says Patrick Ooi, co-founder of whttp://www.appzilo.com.

Oracle Offers In-Memory Applications for Oracle's PeopleSoft

Oracle Malaysia announces the availability of In-Memory Applications for Oracle’s PeopleSoft.

With the new capabilities offered by the new Oracle’s PeopleSoft In-Memory Applications, CFOs and finance executives can vastly improve their ability to make strategic decisions early in the financial period. This insight can help organizations increase their profits, avoid obstacles and improve their return on asset.

In my opinion, the In-Memory technology was largely made popular by SAP HANA.

In layman terms, In-Memory works by loading and manipulating large amount of data into the RAM. For most business applications, relational database serves as the core interface between the application and the host (CPU) for data channeling - when the app requests a data from the database, the database encapsulates all low level processes from the app and returns the data requested.

In other words, for applications to adopt In-Memory capability, the key is to leverage on an In-Memory capable database per se.

All the big boys have it now; SAP, Greenplum and Oracle - it is the latest trend.

The benefits of adopting In-memory capability allows high speed data processing and caters for business decision-making up to real-time speed.
