Kings of Malaysia’s E-Commerce by iPrice Group

Since the boom of e-commerce in Malaysia during the mid-2000s, the e-commerce industry has consistently steadily grown and is today a RM24.6 billion industry. Over the years, we have seen the rise of both international and local players entering e-commerce space to realise its full potential. While we await to see a fully developed e-commerce in the near future as seen in China or the US, let’s assess the progress of e-commerce and see who are the ‘kings’ of e-commerce in Malaysia today.

To find out who holds the ‘throne’ in Malaysia’s e-commerce landscape, we utilised publicly data provided by SimilarWeb, LinkedIn and Social Media pages such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to find their online traffic, number of staff and followers on social media. Based on this, we created an interactive infographic to rank and easily view who is most popular amongst Malaysians.

So, who are the winners in Malaysia’s e-commerce landscape?

How the honor 8 Pro Hits the Mark for the Malaysian Mobile Gamers

The gaming scene in Malaysia is indeed a vibrant one – with the gaming market expected to grow 20% to RM868.7 million this year, and the region to grow by 30% in 2018. This leads to Malaysia being the 26th largest gaming market in the world and the third largest in Southeast Asia, reflecting the country’s potential to become a regional gaming hub by 2025.
Honor 8 Pro

As the fastest growing region in the games market, Malaysia is the second biggest in the mobile games market, partly influenced by the fast-rising (mobile) internet connectivity. In this battleground to introduce devices that satisfies the appetite of today’s power users and gamers, it is ever so important that global smartphone players pay attention to the trends in order to meet market demand.

As smartphone buyers this year look forward to phones that are thinner, faster and with better graphics to keep up with the demand for mobile gaming, the introduction of the honor 8 Pro into the Malaysian market is a timely one for honor Malaysia.

Malaysia, being the first international market to introduce the honor brand outside of China in 2014 have since seen a rapid uptake in brand recognition by the local consumers. Prior to introducing its high-quality devices in the market, the brand invests greatly to understand the local market taste, lifestyle, budget and demands – and the brand recognised the growing need for a mobile gaming smartphone.

Fast, but not furious: The key to winning the digital game

By Manish Bahl, Senior Director – Centre for the Future of Work, Cognizant

Survival in the digital economy will depend on speed. The pace of business change has intensified dramatically as the fruits of digital technology expand to the entire world economy.

Manish Bahl, Senior Director, Cognizant
At the heart of the new digital world order is the unstoppable rise of automation, analytics and artificial intelligence (what we call the new machine), and with that comes an unprecedented level of speed — in doing business, generating value, making decisions, meeting customer expectations, and getting products and services to market. The stakes are even higher because the goal posts are now moving so fast.

In an age when a start-up can reshape an entire industry overnight, businesses must be on their A-game. For instance, Alipay, the world’s biggest payment company, hit $100 billion in transactions in less than a year with zero branches. Great businesses built over decades and even centuries will be for naught if they cannot operate quickly enough. In short, it is speed that determines whether you disrupt or are disrupted.

Mercer : Singaporeans are less satisfied with their employers compared to their global counterparts

Aug 15, 2017 :

Mercer, a global consulting leader in advancing health, wealth and career, today announced the findings of its Singapore Employee Engagement Index: Insights to Enhance Workforce Productivity. The findings show that employee engagement in Singapore has declined consistently over the last three years — this is in stark contrast to the upward trend observed in employee engagement across the globe. Only 73% of Singaporeans are satisfied with the companies they work for compared to 82% of their global counterparts in 2016.

In addition to that, Singaporeans are less likely to endorse their organizations as good employers — 76% of employees in APAC would advocate for their companies as good places to work, while only 68% of employees are willing to do so in Singapore.

NEC Corporation of Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and Netcracker Technology announced today their collaboration with technology giants Red Hat, Juniper Networks and Dell EMC to offer an end-to-end multivendor 5G-ready virtualization platform for service providers and enterprises in Malaysia.

The partnership, building off its Ecosystem 2.0 Program will see NEC Corporation of Malaysia/Netcracker positioning itself as a full SDN/NFV (Software-Defined Networking/Network Functions Virtualization) solution provider that is capable of designing and deploying a network architecture concept that uses IT virtualization technologies to virtualize entire classes of network node functions into building blocks that may connect or chain together to create communication services.

The Dark Side of the Dark Web

Aug 9, 2017 :

Gone are the days when ransomware was developed and distributed by skilled cyber criminals. Today, anyone can easily build and launch ransomware as there are only two key requirements – bad intent and access to the dark web, a marketplace where malware kits are advertised the way a traditional online retailer promotes regular items like clothes and shoes.

Users on the dark web are anonymous and protected by a privacy feature baked directly into the Tor browser, which is the browser used to access it. This also means that law enforcement authorities are unable to identify where the websites are, who owns them, who uses them or who to arrest.

The easy access to the dark web is fuelling ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) distribution models, which essentially enable novice cybercriminals to download and use ransomware. As ransomware is cheap to purchase and spread, it also provides a quicker payout than stealing credit card data or personal information.

These and other trends are covered in Kaspersky Lab’s latest quarterly threat intelligence summary.

How automation is shaping the workplace of the future

by Darren Rushworth, President APAC, NICE Ltd

It is inevitable that robots will become our co-workers. Any repetitive task that requires accuracy and speed, but little judgment, would be better performed by a robot. When humans are made to perform manual, mundane processes repeatedly, it can cause frustration over time and be error prone. Given the tight labour market for good talent[1], it simply is not a good use of precious resources either. The solution is called Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and it’s here in Asia today. Through RPA, Asian businesses can automate many repetitive processes, in both front and back offices, and improve efficiencies and effectiveness to become more competitive in today’s digital landscape.

While IDC expects 40 percent of digital transformation initiatives in Asia Pacific to be supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities by 2020, only 12 percent of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) in the region believe that AI will have a positive impact on their businesses in the next five years. It is not uncommon for CIOs who are saddled with shrinking budgets and increasing demands from business users to be sceptical about yet another new technology. What they want to know is how the technology will work, if it will really deliver on the hype, and what’s the Return on Investment (ROI)? Here are the answers to these questions:

UTM Whitepaper reviews 177 MHz spectrum gap for Malaysia’s Mobile Broadband

Aug 10, 2017 :

Wireless Communication Centre (WCC) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) today released a whitepaper to understand the existing mobile broadband (MBB) performance and user experience in Malaysia. The whitepaper reveals that the nation requires an additional 307 MHz spectrum to satisfy MBB traffic forecasted by 2020. However, only 130 MHz out of 307 MHz can be achieved, resulting in 177 MHz of spectrum gap to be fulfilled, according to the study. To enable WBB (wireless broadband) requirement, machine-to-machine (M2M) communications and IoT services, like video surveillance, even more spectrum is needed.

Prof. Dr. Tharek Abd Rahman, whitepaper lead researcher and Director of Wireless Communication Centre (WCC), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), accompanied by his team of researchers who spearheaded the study on Malaysia’s spectrum needs.

The study was conducted in four key areas of Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak across urban, suburban, rural and indoor areas. The study indicated that there is a serious need for enhancing 4G network capabilities in rural areas of East Malaysia. Although, Selangor and Klang Valley has a strong position in 4G services with consistent and stable results, there are signs that the network is becoming more congested in these areas. It also showed that there were indoor areas with poor cellular signal strength coverage distributions which can be further enhanced.

Malaysia is poised to benefit immensely from the full potential of the digital economy. Wireless connectivity is the key platform for digital economy and spectrum is the main commodity driving our wireless services. The deployment of wireless connectivity can enhance productivity and expand the nation’s economy.

Lumina Networks Enters SDN Market

Aug 8, 2017 - K.L :

Lumina Networks, Inc. launched today in the software-defined networking (SDN) market, through its acquisition of assets associated with the SDN Controller product family from Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. Along with a leading SDN Controller solution, powered by OpenDaylight™, Lumina brings a talented team of network software engineers and existing customer engagements with some of the world’s largest service providers. Offering the Lumina SDN Controller, applications and Network Development (NetDev) Services, Lumina is the catalyst that brings open software networking out of the lab and into production networks.

Transitioning to software-based networks can dramatically lower capital and operational costs while transforming network functionality and customer experience. Yet, the complexity of the transition from hardware to software, along with the crucial requirement of independence from vendors, has made it difficult for service providers to move beyond lab trials and into production environments. This is where open source-based networking technology can help.

Using OpenDaylight as its preferred open source controller, Lumina enables service providers to directly control their SDN implementations while providing the flexibility to develop their own solutions through their choice of vendors thus eliminating lock-in. To ensure 100 percent compatibility with OpenDaylight’s code base, Lumina contributes enhancements made to its SDN Controller back to the open source community.

Barracuda Survey: 44 Percent Malaysians Surveyed Confident with Moving to Public Cloud

Aug 1, 2017 - K.L -

Barracuda Networks, Inc. a leading provider of cloud-connected security and storage solutions, shares that 44 percent of Malaysians surveyed felt confident their organisations move to public cloud was secure.

The findings were part of a survey on public cloud commissioned by Barracuda and conducted by Vanson Bourne amongst 450 people in 6 countries in Asia Pacific (APAC) including Malaysia. Respondents came from different sectors and industries including manufacturing, technology, financial services and more.

James Forbes-May, VP of APAC

James Forbes-May, Vice President of Asia Pacific, Barracuda shares, “58 percent of the Malaysians surveyed, said that they have more trust on public cloud today as compared to five years ago. Yet only 36.10 percent of Malaysian respondents said their organisations were using public cloud.”

Malaysian respondents also choose Google as their preferred public cloud provider with 70 percent of respondents organisations using the service. Amazon Web Services was next at 48 percent while Microsoft Azure followed close with 40 percent and IBM Bluemix at 34 percent. Respondents also stated that their organisations used more than one cloud provider.

69 percent of APAC responders stated that this was due to different providers having different strength, while 35 percent said no one provider was able to provide everything they needed on one platform. This however creates a complex IT environment and higher costs. Public cloud accounted for 22.71 percent of IT budget spending for these Malaysian respondents organisations.
