NVIDIA Cloud GPU Technologies Redefines Computing Industry for 3rd Time

NVIDIA kicked off the GPU Technology Conference (GTC) by unveiling its third industry-shaping innovation since its founding 19 years ago -- technologies that accelerate cloud computing using the enormous computing capabilities of the GPU.

Five years in the making, NVIDIA's cloud GPU technologies are based on the company's new Kepler GPU architecture, designed for use in large-scale data centers. Its virtualization capabilities allow GPUs to be simultaneously shared by multiple users. Its ultra-fast streaming display capability eliminates lag, making a remote data center feel like it's just next door. And its extreme energy efficiency and processing density lowers data center costs.

NVIDIA's introduction of cloud GPU technologies follows its 1999 invention of the GPU, which revolutionized visual computing, and its 2006 creation of CUDA®, a parallel-processing technology enabling dramatic acceleration of computing performance.

"Kepler cloud GPU technologies shifts cloud computing into a new gear," said Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA president and chief executive officer. "The GPU has become indispensable. It is central to the experience of gamers. It is vital to digital artists realizing their imagination. It is essential for touch devices to deliver silky smooth and beautiful graphics. And now, the cloud GPU will deliver amazing experiences to those who work remotely and gamers looking to play untethered from a PC or console."

The enterprise implementation of Kepler cloud technologies, the NVIDIA VGX™ platform, accelerates virtualized desktops. Enterprises will use it to provide seamless remote computing that allows even the most demanding applications to be streamed to a notebook or mobile device.

The gaming implementation of Kepler cloud technologies, NVIDIA GeForce GRID, powers cloud gaming services. Gaming-as-a-service providers will use it to remotely deliver magical gaming experiences, with the potential to surpass those on a console.

NVIDIA issued separate press releases today describing both the VGX platform and GeForce GRID, as well a press release focused on new NVIDIA Tesla® GPUs built on the Kepler architecture that set a new standard for high performance computing.

Joining Huang on stage at GTC were executives representing key partners supporting NVIDIA's cloud technologies. They included: David Yen, general manager and senior vice president of the Data Center Group at Cisco; Brad Peterson, technology strategist, and Sumit Dhawan, group vice president and general manager, at Citrix; David Perry, CEO and co-founder of Gaikai; and Grady Cofer, visual effects supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic.

Why Organization Needs to Implement Ethernet Fabric ?

Network infrastructure have not kept pace with server virtualization, creating bottleneck.

Data center networks need to evolve to be more virtualized, flat, intelligent and automated. The network fabric must mirror the transformation in the computer architecture for organizations to fully realize the benefits of business agility, operational efficiencies and lower costs.

Key findings:
  • Server virtualization has crossed the inflection point with 67% of organizations adopting it. 46% of organizations that have virtualized are running production environments on virtual machines (VM).
  • 35% of organizations are using cloud in one form or the other. Private cloud is the most popular deployment model with 40% of cloud users using this delivery model.
  • Network virtualization, flattening the data center network architecture and simplifying network management are top priorities for IT decision makers.
  • Ethernet fabric architecture is becoming critical due to its scalability, flatness and efficiency.

Frost & Sullivan recommendations:

To better support their virtualization and cloud infrastructure, customers need to:

  • Virtualize the network layer for seamless creation of resource pools.
  • Optimize the network infrastructure through flat architecture, protocol enhancement and open frameworks.
  • Automate the network to be VM aware and enable elastic scaling with automated provisioning of resources.
  • Pro-actively monitor and manage the network to increase availability and reduce operational costs.
We all know that cloud computing is normally deployed into three flavours namely public, private, and hybrid clouds.

The adoption of private clouds has grown significantly in the last few months. This is due to the ability of private clouds to offer several benefits of public clouds while addressing the disadvantages associated with this kind of deployment.

Out of 35% of organizations who are using cloud, 14% are using private cloud, 9% are using hybrid cloud and 12% are using public cloud.

To implement private cloud effectively, Frost & Sullivan recommends four (4) steps.

1.) Consolidate

To consolidate infrastructure, virtualization of servers, storage, application and network infrastructure should be performed.

According to Frost & Sullivan, 67% of organizations in the APAC have performed some forms of virtualization.

While server virtualization can solve many challenges of traditional server computing, it poses new issues around the network and storage infrastructure. Existing data center network architectures that are reliant on spanning tree protocol (STP) with hierarchical three-tier architecture may not be well suited for virtual workloads and growing east-west traffic.

Therefore, the network fabric must be deployed which supports an environment that is simple, secure, flat and virtualized; virtualization ready.

2.) Optimize

Optimization needs to be performed towards network, storage and service management.

Three (3) things needed to be done. 1.) Protocol enhancement, 2.)Architecture redesign, 3.) Adoption of Open Frameworks.

3.) Automate

Cloud automation needs to be performed, four (4) key areas have been identified.

4.) Manage

Pro-active monitoring and analytics need to be implemented to activaly maintain and improve the infrastructure.

Brocade's Offerings to Enable Cloud Ready Network

1.) Brocade One

2.) Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS)

Network infrastructure needs to keep pace with the trend of adoption of virtualization and deployment of cloud computing infrastructure.

Flamer: The most complex malware threat since Stuxnet and Duqu

On a par with Stuxnet and Duqu, Symantec’s Security Response team is analysing a new highly sophisticated and discreet threat: W32.Flamer. The analysis so far reveals that the malware was built with the ability to obtain information from infected systems primarily located in the Middle East. As with the previous two threats, this code was not written by a single individual but by an organised well funded group of personnel with directives. The code includes multiple references to the string ‘FLAME’ which may be indicative of either instances of attacks by various parts of the code, or the malware’s development project name.

The threat has operated discreetly for at least two years with the ability to steal documents, take screenshots of users’ desktops, spread via USB drives, disable security vendor products, and under certain conditions spread to other systems. The threat may also have the ability to leverage multiple known and patched vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, in order to spread across a network.

Initial telemetry indicates that the targets of this threat are located primarily in Palestinian West Bank, Hungary, Iran, and Lebanon. Other targets include Russia, Austria, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates. The industry sectors or affiliations of individuals targeted are currently unclear. However, initial evidence shows the victims may not all be targeted for the same reason. Many appear targeted for individual personal activities, rather than their company of employment. Interestingly, in addition to particular organisations being targeted, many of the attacked systems appear to be personal computers being used from home Internet connections.

The recent Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report 17 saw the number of targeted attacks increase dramatically during 2011 from an average of 77 per day in 2010 to 82 per day in 2011. The report also projected that targeted attacks and APTs will continue to be a serious issue and the frequency and sophistication of these attacks will increase.

Analysis and investigation into the various components is ongoing and additional more in-depth technical details as well as attack information will be published soon.

More details can be found in the Security Response blog.

BYOD Has High Potential

I am excited about BYOD (bring your own device), it gives start-up with more opportunities than ever.

Throughout history, many gold mines were uncovered and depleted.

This trend is one of it.

Basically BYOD is an item the umbrella of a bigger trend called consumerization of IT which means the merging of enterprise IT with consumer IT and this is what Apple has been championing for years.

Apple has always been in the consumer market while Oracle, SAP and etc have always been in the enterprise market. Microsoft is actually in both.

I also believe that media-oriented channels will play a bigger role in enterprise IT sales whereby people are no longer convinced by corporate sales person as single point of reference, they will perform analytics before deciding. This brings us back to the long tail which states that people are buying most of what others want to buy, but no matter how unpopular a product is, there will always be some hit and these unpopular but surviving products form the long tail.

BYOD should hit the public sector within the near future and US president Obama agrees with this.

Therefore, enterprise CIOs, before they make any decision, they will keep performing analysis until it became politically correct to make the purchase. The long tail is the decision maker.

It is a great timing for this to happen now, with big companies such as IBM and SAS alike all evangelizing on big data and analytics.

Refer to 'Malaysia Technology News' for latest updates on the dynamism of the ICT industry, focusing on enterprise IT.

And more on trends.

Angel Fundings Depleting Fast

But where is it actually ?

Cradle proposed that those with more money should take initiative to pump in more money into venture capitalist funds and the obvious target is the private sector. But why would they want to do that ? Technically they can do that because they have the money. It is like asking Genting Group to give out RM 100 million for development grant so that they can pay less taxes ? Or is it more like telling rich people to give back society in order to reduce inequality ?

Crowd-funding is an approach where people pool money and resources together, typically via the Internet, to support a particular project, company or cause.

Crowd-funding is good to revitalize public services project, such as those related to solving traffic jams and etc. This can be interesting. The problem is who wants to be responsible for the success and failure of a project ? The project leader must be someone with a privately attached company with above average income pay and someone with another 10 more years in his IT career, this will encourage him to complete these type of public funded project with full capacity and dedication in order to move to the next level which will see his or her retirement. In retrospect, if the project leader is someone at retirement stage, the project may not blossom to its full capacity.

In another report, it is said that VCs fail to do better than their predecessors because of their money manager mentality, and they aren't capable of advising entrepreneurs on how to viably commercialise their products.

To comment on this, I believe that opportunities are getting smaller in a sense where most innovation have been invented. If you look at the success of Google and Facebook, it all premise on the idea of a great product, great timing, first mover advantage, globalized and VC. But VC is just the fuel for the engine, the chicken and egg scenario is the engine must be invented first, and that it can go with any type of fuel as long as it is abundant.

Cradle commented that currently there are only nine (9) venture capitalist funds in the market, it used to have 3 times more.

Good luck, the trend is not on VC now, especially in Malaysia. It should not be the focus, maybe just a bonus. We should create products which will have a large number of users and then only to think about going the next step.

It is an open ended world out there and it is limitless and literally without permanence. The challenge comes in the nature where every moment business opportunity is changing and shifting.

Tablet Traffic Has Grown 10 Times Faster Than Smartphone Traffic

Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:ADBE) today announced findings from its most recent Adobe® Digital Index report examining how global website traffic and engagement differ when the visitor is on a tablet, smartphone or personal computer (PC). The report found that tablet devices will generate more Web traffic than smartphones by early 2013 and that consumers find browsing websites on tablets nearly as engaging as on PCs.

The results indicate that tablets have become a channel very distinct from smartphones. While apps have proven a highly valuable and important component of a mobile strategy, companies would be well served to invest in optimizing mobile Web pages for the growing and affluent* tablet demographic. Key report findings include:
  • The share of website visits from tablets grew approximately 10 times faster than the rate for smartphones in the first two years after market introduction and grew more than 300 percent in the last year. This rapid growth is driven by both higher rates of tablet shipments and a disproportionately higher number of website visits per tablet than smartphones.
  • Tablets’ share of website traffic will exceed smartphone traffic by early 2013 and reach 10 percent of total website traffic in 2014.
  • Although consumers consider the tablet website experience to be nearly as engaging as that of PCs, they use PCs to visit websites three times as frequently as tablets.

“As businesses rethink their digital experiences to include mobile strategies, tablets are emerging as the consumer device of choice,” said Brad Rencher, senior vice president and general manager, Digital Marketing Business, Adobe. “Digital CMOs are wise to take a mobile first approach to optimize their digital content and marketing initiatives with a focus on the tablet experience because the consumer demands it.”

This study significantly expands on the findings from the initial Adobe Digital Index report on the value of tablet users to retail companies released in January of this year, which suggested that in 2011 tablet users spent more per purchase than other online customers. This study analyzed 23 billion visits to the websites of 325 companies from the North America, Western Europe (Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom) and Asia (China, India, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand).

Beware of Facebook IPO Scams

If you are offered exclusive access to subscribe to Facebook’s IPO shares, there’s a good chance that it is a scam.

Symantec Security Response recently spotted a 419 scam message offering a "FACEBOOK (IPO) SUBSCRIPTION PARTNERSHIP PROPOSAL". The use of an all uppercase heading is a common hallmark of such 419 scams.

This scam claims to be sent from a finance firm with offices in multiple locations worldwide. The exact nature of the scam is unclear. The scam mentions loaning money under "soft" or generous terms to buy Facebook shares and then selling them back to the finance firm at a price higher than the original purchase price.

As shown in the screenshot below, a strong indication that it is a scam is the email address which the scammer is soliciting replies to. It is an amateurish-looking address at a common free Web-based email provider. A legitimate company would almost certainly use an email address from its own domain rather than a free Web-based address. The email address and name in the "From" header of the message are also different to the email address and name used in the message body.

Given the high profile nature of this IPO, Symantec expects scammers to take advantage of it in the same way that they have taken advantage of previous news stories and events.

For more information on the above, please click this link to the Symantec’s Security Response blog post at

Symantec advises Internet users to follow these best practices to avoid falling prey to similar scams:
  • Do not click on suspicious links in email messages.
  • Avoid providing any personal information when answering an email.
  • Frequently update your security software (such as Norton Internet Security 2012) which protects you from online phishing.

Android.Opfake Makes Another Run

Android.Opfake is malware written for Android devices that masquerades as various apps and content, including an installer for the Opera Web browser and a pornographic movie, which requires the user to pay for them. It demands payment for the app or content through Short Message Service (SMS) messages.

The creators of the Android.Opfake threat have taken the art of social engineering to new heights as they continue to peddle their wares.

In short, Symantec recently discovered several dummy sites being used to peddle the malware, which is being disguised as games such as Temple Run and Cut the Rope. The attackers have even gone so far as to include images of actual devices playing the games in an attempt to convince unsuspecting users that the malicious versions are actually legitimate.

In addition, Symantec has published a new whitepaper detailing the inner workings of the Opfake malware and how on the surface the threat may appear to utilize a legitimate business model to generate revenue, but a technical analysis reveals the unforeseeable risks it creates for end users. The paper can be found here:

Oracle: Social Media Users Expect Rapid Live Help

Oracle released the results of its “Consumer Views of Live Help Online 2012” report, which surveyed more than 3,000 consumers worldwide regarding their use of customer service channels including call centers, live chat, click-to-call and email.

Compared with a similar survey conducted in 2009, consumers go online more frequently, are more likely to use Live Help and have higher expectations for customer service via social media and Web sites.

Key Findings

  • Social media users expect rapid response: More than half of Twitter users worldwide expect a personal response within two hours of tweeting a question or complaint and 51 percent of Facebook users expect a same-day response to questions or complaints posted via the social media site. As consumers spend more time online, they rely more on Live Help: Half of consumers worldwide browse and research products online daily, nearly double the number reporting daily habits in 2009. Consumer use of online customer service is also on the rise, as 50 percent of consumers use of Live Help compared with 37 percent in 2009.
  • In China, consumer use of online support jumps dramatically: 76 percent of Chinese consumers are online daily to browse or research products (vs. 49 percent worldwide) and 60 percent say they use Live Help to reach customer service (vs. 50 percent worldwide).
  • Latin American consumers are most likely to expect a social media presence: 84 percent of consumers surveyed in Mexico and Brazil use Facebook and 63 percent of those using Facebook said they expect companies to have a presence there.
  • Consistent with findings in 2009, Live Help remains among the three most important features consumers expect to find at a company’s Web site, along with detailed information about products and services and access to personal account information.

Sophos Offers Partners New Complete Security Suites

In response to partner and customer demand, Sophos introduced new Complete Security Suites; Web Protection, Data Protection and Complete Security. These suites offer Sophos partners the tools they need to help their clients address the evolving security challenges IT departments are facing due the consumerization of IT, the rise of advanced persistent threats, and an increase in malware.

The Complete Security Suites combine key functions like endpoint, data and web and email protection, along with mobile device management and protection for Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint. The new offerings give partners a competitive edge in the industry—one vendor, one license, ease of management and deployment. And the array of market-leading solutions creates even more secure environments for their clients at a greater value.

The Complete Security Suites will also shorten the sales cycle for Sophos partners as clients no longer have to evaluate individual solutions in order to solve each security challenge. Instead, they are able to offer solutions that work together—across all points—from a trusted provider.

“We recognize that partners are operating in a competitive environment, so they need tools that will help them meet their clients’ demands for stronger security systems,” said Stuart Fisher, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Sophos. “We have built this complete security system for IT because IT teams shouldn't have to spend time determining which of their point security products is at fault every time they have a problem, only to find that the problem is that the point products don't work together. With our suites, customers know it’s always Sophos securing them, and they can be confident that they will be backed by both our industry-leading support and our excellent partners.”

SAS unveils SAS High-Performance Analytics

SAS, the leader in business analytics software and services, today announces the availability of SAS High-Performance Analytics software for Malaysia enterprises and business organizations.

SAS High-Performance Analytics, appliance-ready software for Teradata and Greenplum, performs complex analytics processes on big data, slashing analysis time from days to hours, from minutes to seconds, on billions of rows of data.

SAS High-Performance Analytics, which began shipping last year, will be enhanced in August with the new text-mining support to provide companies with insight gained from unstructured data in emails, social media, call center logs, documents and other information.

SAS Malaysia’s Managing Director, Andrew Tan shares that High-performance analytics is the most significant SAS technology advance in at least 10 years. “Business leaders don’t want to wait overnight to process data. They want information as quickly as possible and they want it in a format that makes sense to them and they want to access it when they need it wherever they are. They want to deal with transforming their business now.”

According to Forrester Research, on average, data doubles every 18 months for critical applications, while for some, such as telecommunication call-data-record applications, it can quadruple in the same period.

In the past, we relied heavily on transactional and electronic commerce data, but today new types of workloads are entering the organizational landscape, ranging from mobile, social media, instrumented data, metering data to documents, audio, and video.

Unstructured data, accounting for more than 80 percent of today’s data, can be difficult to analyze, often swamping traditional computer architectures. SAS High-Performance Analytics enables organizations to address “big data,” to reveal hidden relationships within structured and unstructured data –in order to uncover potential opportunities, such as new lines of business, untapped customer segments, client satisfaction issues and profits.

“Enterprise data assets have grown exponentially in recent years, and these massive amounts of structured and unstructured data require two things to be valuable for decision making,” said Surya Mukherjee, Senior Analyst at Ovum. “First, the data volume must be abstracted from users so that they can analyze very large data sets without having to worry about the plumbing. And second, these insights must be delivered quickly to decision makers before a business opportunity is lost or a risky situation develops into a catastrophe.”

“High-performance analytics like those offered by SAS have the potential to generate significant value from data, providing answers in near-real time and delivering competitive advantage,” Mukherjee said.

Banks, Telcos, Retailers and Manufacturers stand to gain from High Performance Analytics Tan further shares, “Enterprises are finding real value in faster answers. With high-performance analytics applied to their text data, companies can greatly improve decision making.”

“For example, a large financial services firm with millions of customer accounts and thousands of products can merge customer call center transcripts with demographic and financial data to improve response rates from marketing campaigns with SAS. Add to that the speed of SAS High-Performance Analytics, and marketers can interactively adjust and fine-tune scenarios to find the best way to reach customers.”

SAS High-Performance Analytics could be highly beneficial in many other scenarios, such as in financial service, manufacturing and telecommunication:-
  • Using SAS High-Performance Analytics, a major US retailer delivers store-specific pricing involving more than 270 million item prices every week. What once took more than 30 hours to compute now takes two with SAS High-Performance Analytics. The retailer can then optimize its prices more frequently, respond to market conditions and maximize revenue.
  • An Asian bank valued its complex capital markets portfolio of 100,000 instruments across multiple time horizons with more than 100,000 scenarios in less than 30 minutes with high-performance analytics technology from SAS, calculating on-demand, intra-day portfolio risk.
  • A manufacturer could use SAS to build predictive models from product and parts catalogs, which contain millions of items with full text descriptions. The models could then be used to match new customer service requests with appropriate information, and prioritize ordering needs in near-real time.

Getting insights faster than ever

Tan further shares that every business is facing an overload of information. The challenge is making it actionable in an ever shrinking window of opportunity. “Being able to process data very quickly is one thing but it is another thing if we can process information faster using analytics which gives people a peek into the future of their respective business. SAS is different in that respect as SAS High-Performance Analytics enables fast processing of analytics not just data.” “With in-memory analytics, we are taking complex analytical processes such as credit risk scoring or marketing optimization or value at risk calculations and reducing its processing time from hours to minutes.” The SAS High-Performance Analytics product family includes other solutions, such as SAS High-Performance Risk, SAS Visual Analytics and its patent-pending SAS® LASR™ Analytic Server.

Chrome Store For Malaysia

Google launched the Chrome Web Store in Malaysia. The Chrome Web Store is an open marketplace for web-based applications. Whether you’re using a Chromebook or the Chrome browser on a traditional computer, the web store gives you an easy place to browse, discover and purchase the best apps on the web. It also gives developers a dedicated place to showcase and monetize their web applications.  Since the Chrome Web Store launched less than a year ago, we’ve expanded into more than 30 countries, and we’re now seeing millions of installations per day from the store.

Web apps make the web fun, useful and entertaining. However, discovering the best applications on the web -- like a great game of virtual basketball -- can be a challenge because there has never been a dedicated place to search and browse for them. Now, with ratings, reviews and a user-friendly interface, the Chrome Web Store gives users an easy place to discover and purchase these web apps.

Sajith Sivanandan, Country Manager, Google Malaysia said, “We’re especially excited that the new Chrome Web Store includes several apps designed especially for Malaysians, created by local developers.”

For news and current affairs, check out the The Star, Malaysiakini and The Malaysian Insider apps. For travel booking and information, there’s the Air Asia app. For technology news and views in Malay, the Chrome app will keep you up to date. And, for your personal finance needs the Maybank app is also available.

Of course, there’s Angry Birds and Battle Stations too, as well the popular file storage app Box, photo editing tools like Pixlr, and the Google Docs suite.

You can also find in the Chrome Web Store lots of extensions and themes to help you customize your web browsing experience. Extensions are custom features and functionalities that you can add to Chrome. Unlike apps, extensions like PrayOnTime -- which displays the Islamic daily prayer times for your location -- are always available no matter what website you’re on. Themes change the appearance of the background of your Chrome browser to give it a personal touch.

In the Chrome Web Store, apps and extensions are presented in a wall of images when you visit the store, so you can quickly scan the store and find interesting things to try out. Apps and extensions are easy to install (watch a video here: — just hover over an image and click “Add to Chrome.” You can also choose from hundreds of eye-popping themes.

“For Malaysian developers, the launch of the Chrome Web Store means they’ll be able to easily build and distribute their apps to the more than 200 million people around the world who already use Chrome,” Sajith adds. “A check with GS Statcounter informs us that Chrome is used by 44% of desktop Internet users in Malaysia.”

Chrome users will now find it much easier to discover and add new apps, extensions and themes to their web browser, across a variety of categories. And as more developers come on board, you can expect to see apps from great local publishers, content creators and companies.

Facebook To Focus on Mobile For 2012

Facebook make it a point that the mobile platform must be properly taken care of in order to capitalize on the advertising industry.

For more information, refer to Reuters.

Malaysia has one of the biggest smartphone users in the world. A survey commissioned by Google in Oct 2011 found that
  • 1 in 3 Malaysians say they would rather give up their TV than their smartphone.
  • On a daily basis: 43% of Malaysian smartphone users go onto the mobile Internet.
  • 68% say they never leave home without their smartphones and 58% say they first access information on their smartphones and then follow up to find more info on their laptops / PCs.
Another interesting thing to look at is Facts and Figures about Smartphones in Malaysia which was published Oct 2011 where it is found that the typical smartphone user: 25-34 years old, high educated and working.

Like Google, Facebook business model is very unconventional. Google made most of its software free by heavily invested into R & D while not making direct income from it products. Nevertheless, over the years Google has transitioned itself from a total dependent on the advertising business by diverting into other business activities such as manufacturing mobile phones, enterprise products and etc.

The real Facebook business model is still a debate. Most people would believe that it is advertisement, but if we look carefully, I don't see much advertisement hanging around my own page. Some says it is charging Facebook app developers a fee for its platform. My last analysis feels that it can also be in the business of providing intelligence.

Sonru Online Interview Automated Recruitment

Sonru is a SaaS solution for online recruitment. It caters for automated online interviews by having pre-recorded and unattended interview process.

Sonru's video interviewing solution replicates a real live interview. Interviewers create and send (via email) competence-based interviews to candidates (specifying the time allowed to read and answer each questions) - interviewer and candidate do NOT need to be online at the same time.

Candidates record their video responses to the questions in the own time and own location. Stopping halfway through is not an option.

The results of the 'interview' will then be evaluated and shared with colleagues to facilitate for candidate selection. It is a one stone kill many birds weapon.

Sonru is being brought to the Malaysian audience by PowerUpSuccess, a company involves in providing human capital development services.

Sonru is fully integrated with Taleo, a cloud-based SaaS Talent Management solutions which was acquired by Oracle Feb 2012. Taleo was initially targeting SMBs and its core modules include recruiting, performance, compensation, learning, career advancement and talent intelligence.

Therefore, customers need not have the pre-requisite of having in-house talent management solution in order to reap full benefits of Sonru. As the matter of fact, the synergy with Taleo provides customers with a full suite of solution.

Signing up to Sonru is in many ways similar to signing up to a public hosted blog service.

It targets companies of all sizes, competiting with HR recruitment agencies for middle-tier head-hunting market segments. Comparing to head-hunters, Sonru provides customers with better costs saving of up to 80%.

Sonru is Irish originated and its APAC CEO is Mr. Luke Falvey who is based in Singapore.

OSX.FalshBack.K Was Created For Google Ad-Click

Refer to previous introduction on the OSX.FalshBack.K.

Symantec has just published a more detailed overview and inner workings.

It is interesting to take note this time that the ultimate goal of the OSX.Flashback.K Trojan is to generate money through ad-clicking.

It works on the basis of generating dynamic URLs as a form of reporting-back-to-the -HQ. These URLs are known as C & C (command and control) server addresses.

Once the HQ gained control of the infected PC, it will perform hijack on Google Ad-click.

This security threat makes a good case study for computer science and software engineering.

Dell SharePoint Optimization

Dell’s SharePoint Infrastructure Optimization solution takes a comprehensive Microsoft® SharePoint® infrastructure approach which consolidates SharePoint unstructured content, backup, and archive datasets on the Dell™ DX Object Storage Platform, thus improving end user performance, enabling better manageability, reducing capital and operational expenditures and increasing SharePoint service quality.

After externalization of large content such as Word documents, PDFs, etc., from the SharePoint SQL Server database to the Dell DX Object Storage Platform using the DocAve Extender component, backing up a SharePoint site collection was 29x faster than backing up the non-externalized site collection, and restoring it was 32x faster. Routine SharePoint operations (browse, search, upload, and download) were 17% - 40% faster once this large content was moved to the external storage.

SharePoint is a multi-faceted platform that is being utilized at an increasing rate by corporations as a mechanism to manage and gain value from enterprise content. The growth of this content in the form of unstructured data and the increased reliance on SharePoint is challenging IT to adequately architect the underlying infrastructure to match and grow with business usage.

To help with this, storage and data management solutions can be deployed alongside SharePoint deployments in order to deal with the above mentioned data growth.

1.) Dell DX Object Storage Platform:

The DX Object Storage Platform is a new generation of storage platform that combines ease of management with scalability and resilience. It’s unique manner of storing data, be it SharePoint content, a backup dataset, or an archived SharePoint site as an object and not a collection of bytes, provides surprising ROI and TCO benefits that can be breakthroughs for IT departments.

The idea is to perform offloading of BLOB, backup, and archive flows from the main SharePoint environment to DX Object Storage Platform.

2.) AvePoint’s DocAve Software Platform:

DocAve provides a fully integrated and scalable software solution for organizations to streamline and simplify tasks associated with managing SharePoint environments, help comply with stringent SLAs including aggressive RTOs and RPOs for protecting SharePoint content, improve SharePoint performance for global users, optimize SQL resources, and can reduce risks associated with managing complex SharePoint environments

This study is simulated using the Medium SharePoint 2010 Farm. SharePoint is implemented in four servers: two SharePoint Front End Web Servers for high availability, a SharePoint Application Server, and a SharePoint SQL Server Database server.

DX Object Storage Cluster is included, consisting of primary and secondary DX6000 Cluster Services Nodes, and two DX6012 Storage Nodes with 12 1 TB disks each.

SharePoint roles are assigned to the various servers to maximize performance and availability. The Admin and Crawl components are assigned to the application server while the search Index is spread across both web front end servers, with each web front end server’s Index portion mirrored on the other web front end server. This provides higher performance (by spreading the work across multiple servers) as well as high availability.

DocAve's Functionality

1.) Extender

The Remote BLOB Store (RBS) feature of SQL Server 2008 can improve SharePoint functionality immensely by removing the binary large objects (BLOBs) such as large PDF files from the SQL Server database and storing them on external storage, replacing them with stubs. DocAve software contains an RBS provider through their Extender functionality, which has been certified with the Dell DX Object Storage Platform.

2.) Archiver

With DocAve Archiver objects meeting certain criteria – when last accessed, size, etc. - can be moved from SharePoint to the DX Object Storage Platform and maintained there according to a specified retention policy.

3.) Backup/Restore

DocAve Granular Backup and Restore provides for full or incremental backup of any specified sites, site collections, or content databases, to the DX Object Storage Platform.

1.) Backup and Restore Performance

Backing up the Extended site collection was 29x faster than backing up the non-Extended site collection, and restoring it was 32x faster.

2.) Load Performance

The results of the test are shown in the next table. Using DocAve Extender to move BLOBs from SQL Server to the Dell DX Object Storage Platform results in performance improvements of from 17% to 40%.

Dachis Group Launches Content Insight Functionality

Dachis Group, the world's leading social software and solutions firm, announced the launch of Content Insight and the integration of the Facebook® Insights API into its social analytics platform, providing brands with a way to measure the impact of conversation streams and determine the most effective content for their pages.

The new Content Insight capability is now available to customers of Dachis Group's Social Performance Monitor software-as-a-service (SaaS) product.

Dachis Group also announced that they are one of only a few companies out of 231 in total certified in three of four groups within the newly updated Facebook Preferred Marketing Developer (PMD) Program. The Facebook Preferred Marketing Developer Program helps developers build products that make social marketing easier and more effective for big brands looking to leverage the power of social marketing on Facebook for engagement at scale.

"We're proud to collaborate with Facebook on this service and excited to be able to surface deep conversation data for our customers," said Erik Huddleston, EVP Product and CTO, Dachis Group. "Executives are demanding real ROI measurement for social spend and Likes and Followers are no longer a satisfactory measure of performance. Brand marketers need better insight into which actions and messages are moving the needle on the business outcomes that matter."

The Promise of Social for Brands

For brand marketers, the rise of social networks like Facebook, with its 800 million users, brings both the promise of unprecedented access to customers and insight, and the challenge of how to make sense of the data and scale customer engagement.

Brands and companies set up Facebook Pages to market themselves and engage with customers. But until now, they've only had blunt instruments to measure the value of their investments--the number of Likes or Fans--to measure how well they're doing. Facebook Insights API gives brands better understanding into how well their Pages are reaching Facebook users and Dachis Group Content Insight uncovers which conversations the brand is having on Facebook are the most effective.

The Evolution of Facebook's Partner Program

When Facebook introduced the Preferred Developer Consultant (PDC) program in December 2009, Dachis Group companies comprised three of the seven inaugural members. The program was created to provide brands and organizations with a trusted list of companies experienced in integrating and creating Facebook products and technologies.

As Facebook's network grew, Dachis Group expanded to become one of the largest of the 90 partners, creating more than 500 custom Facebook applications, tabs, and Facebook connect integrations for global clients.

Today, Facebook rolled out its new Preferred Marketing Developer Program as part of its Facebook Marketing Developer Spring Summit. The program recognizes companies that have developed technologies in one or more of the following specialty areas:
  • Insights: Page and post analysis, benchmarking, KPI tracking, and other tools for measuring performance across Facebook objects.
  • Pages: Post scheduling and targeting, moderation, permissioning, and other tools to manage Facebook Pages.
  • Apps: Services and platforms for building socially enabled integrations-customized or self service.
  • Ads: Advanced ad creation, campaign management, and reporting capabilities.

Dachis Group is certified to be included in three of the four partner classifications, including: Insights, Pages, and Apps.

How Dachis Group Leverages Facebook Data

As part of the Facebook Insights program, Dachis Group has launched its Content Insight service as a component of its Social Performance Monitor SaaS application.

Dachis Group's Content Insight analyzes all of a brand's Facebook posts, correlates it with other data flows, provides a rich collection of measures, and applies semantic analysis to show number of views and sentiment for each post and comment. Content Insight also integrates with Advocate Insight, Dachis Group's latest SaaS application, to show whether a Facebook visitor is one of the brand's advocates.

For each post, Content Insight provides:
  • Post Reach: The number of unique people who have seen the post.
  • Engaged Users: The number of unique people who have clicked anywhere on your post.
  • Sentiment: A measure from -100 to 100 capturing the overall sentiment for the post.
  • Virality Score: The number of unique people who have created a story from your Page Post as a percentage of the number of unique people who’ve seen it.
  • Post PTAT: "People Talking About This" is the number of unique users who have created a "story" about a page in a seven-day period, such as liking a page or posting on a wall.
