AIMS 2016 Review and Outlook for 2017

The AIMS Group, Southeast Asia’s leading carrier-neutral data services provider, today shares its review of 2016 and outlook for 2017.

AIMS Group Chief Executive Officer, Chiew Kok Hin says “In the last two years we have seen data centre players going bust due to mismanagement and oversupply of space that lead to a price war.

At the start of the internet boom, data centres grew in demand, bringing in good return of investment for the initial players. That attracted more players to join the market. Unfortunately a data centre is not just a piece of real estate, you need to have the expertise to manage clients’ needs and ever changing technology that at once acts as a catalyst and an obstruction to the industry.

Sophos Predicts Top 10 Cyber Security Trends for 2017

Dec 22, 2016:

2016 saw a huge number and variety of cyber attacks, ranging from a high-profile DDoS using hijacked Internet-facing security cameras to the alleged hacking of party officials during the US election. The year also saw a rising tide of data breaches, from organizations big and small, and significant losses of people’s personal information.

Joergen Jakobsen, Regional Vice President,
Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ), Sophos

With the year almost over, Joergen Jakobsen, Regional Vice President for Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ) at Sophos, looks into his crystal ball to predict the top cyber security trends for 2017:

# 1 Shift from exploitation to targeted social attacks.
Cybercriminals are getting better at exploiting the ultimate vulnerability - humans. Ever more sophisticated and convincing targeted attacks seek to coax users into compromising themselves. For example, it’s common to see an email that addresses the recipient by name and claim they have an outstanding debt the sender has been authorized to collect. Applying shock by pretending to be borrowing authority or law enforcement are common and effective tactics. The email directs users to a malicious link that they are panicked into clicking on, opening them up to attack. Such phishing attacks can no longer be recognized by obvious mistakes.

Ransomware is Kaspersky Lab’s Story of the Year 2016

Dec 15, 2016:

In 2016 ransomware attacks on business increased three-fold: which represents a change from an attack every 2 minutes in January to one every 40 seconds by October. For individuals the rate of increase went from every 20 seconds to every 10 seconds. With more than 62 new families of ransomware introduced during the year, the threat grew so aggressively that Kaspersky Lab has named ransomware its key topic for 2016.

The Story of the Year paper forms part of Kaspersky Lab’s annual Kaspersky Security Bulletin that looks back over the year’s major threats and data and predicts what to expect in 2017.

Among other things, 2016 revealed the extent to which the Ransomware-as-a-Service business model now appeals to criminals who lack the skills, resources or inclination to develop their own. Under the arrangement, code creators offer their malicious product ‘on demand’, selling uniquely modified versions to customers who then distribute it through spam and websites, paying a commission to the creator – the main financial beneficiary.

“The classic ‘affiliate’ business model appears to be working as effectively for ransomware as it does for other types of malware. Victims often pay up so money keeps flowing through the system. Inevitably this has led to us seeing new cryptors appear almost daily,” said Fedor Sinitsyn, Senior Malware Analyst, Kaspersky Lab.

Queensland Brain Institute to Accelerate Brain Research with Brocade

Dec 9, 2016

The Queensland Brain Institute in Australia is one of the world’s largest dedicated facilities focused on understanding how the brain works and finding ways to prevent diseases.

While it has been remarkably successful in making major neuroscientific discoveries—with an Alzheimer's breakthrough among the world’s most discussed medical research last year—the difficulty accessing, storing, and managing increasingly large data sets from brain imaging and microscopy devices is a constant consideration.

Continuous improvement is vitally important to ensure scientific research staff have a “zero friction” experience in their workflows.

Queensland Brain Institute will become the first organization in Australia to migrate to Brocade® Gen 6 Fibre Channel storage networking solutions, and Brocade G620 switches will be deployed to provide the speed and performance the Institute needs to eliminate data bottlenecks and accelerate research into preventing brain diseases such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, motor neuron disease, anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.

Melaka City Implements Advanced Philips CityTouch connected street lighting management system

Nov 27, 2016:

Bandaraya Melaka, Malaysia – Philips Lighting, a global leader in lighting, has completed installation of the Philips CityTouch connected street lighting management system in the historic state of Melaka. Involving over 1,000 light points, the project marks Melaka as the first city in the country to successfully deploy a cloud-based, intelligent street lighting management system. Officiating the handover ceremony, Melaka State Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Seri Utama Ir. Hj. Idris bin Hj. Haron stands behind the project that is part of Melaka’s Green City Action Plan (GCAP) to make Melaka a Green Technology State by the year 2020.

"We are very proud to be part of the Melaka State Government’s green initiative. LED-based, Philips CityTouch lighting ecosystem can cut energy consumption by up to 80%. This project reflects the state government’s commitment to uphold the heritage of this city with more sustainable developments for its residents and tourists, said Mr. Alok Ghose, Managing Director for Philips Lighting Malaysia. We applaud the foresight by the Melaka State Government to make connected lighting a pillar of the smart city. With increased population growth and urbanization, connected street lighting meets the need for quality lighting, and also realizes the potential that Internet of Things (IoT) can bring to Melaka city,Ghose added.

Philips CityTouch is an end-to-end digital street lighting management system where each light point is connected and performance data gets exchanged through existing cellular networks with the servers to manage the city’s LED street lighting. Over 1,000 light fixtures of 250W conventional streetlights were replaced with 150W Philips CityTouch ready smart luminaires in the central parts of Bandaraya Melaka and major arteries into the city.

Customer Experience: The Key to Digital Success

By Jayajyoti Sengupta, APAC Head, Cognizant, and Swami Nathan C, Director, QE&A Technology Centre of Excellence, Cognizant

Thriving in today’s fast-moving digital age is about building businesses around the needs of customers. Staying competitive and relevant is increasingly about meeting heightened customer expectations for hyper-personalisation and instant gratification. Digital technology advancements have enabled customers to more effectively interact with brands, search for information, try products, communicate with other customers and, perhaps most importantly, buy in real time. Today’s well-informed customers are spoilt for choice and ensuring a seamless and differentiated customer experience has a direct bearing on their purchase decisions and on ensuring that they keep coming back for more.

Jayajyoti Sengupta, APAC Head, Cognizant

The game has clearly changed. When it comes to delivering a consistent, personalised and seamless customer experience digitally or in-person, businesses are under mounting pressure to excel. Rather than compete just on product quality, 90 percent of businesses this year will also compete based on customer experience. This is a substantial jump from previous years — 36 percent in 2014 and 58 percent in 2015. IDC Asia Pacific describes this as customer intimacy at scale, predicting that by 2018, 80 percent of B2C and 60 percent of B2B organisations will overhaul their “digital front door” to support 1,000 to 10,000 times as many customer touch-points as they do today.

BAE Online Cyber Risk Assessment Tool

BAE Systems has on Nov 17, 2016 introduced its new online cyber risk assessment tool, allowing Malaysian organisations to assess their cybersecurity preparedness and understand areas where they may be vulnerable to attack.

The tool, which measures an organisation’s cyber security preparedness across 10 key elements of ICT security, including incident response and information management, was developed in response to global research indicating the potential weaknesses in businesses’ cyber security measures, including in Malaysia.

BAE found that 95% of respondents believe their organisation has the right security controls in place.

Yet more than half (51%) of those surveyed said they had experienced a cyber attack in the past year, with the average cost being at least RM1,712,360. Almost every day we learn about new, sophisticated cyber attacks that have wreaked havoc on targeted organisations. For organisations to be protected against the growing cyber threat, it takes more than just building a firewall, but awareness at top management levels.

Access the Cyber Risk tool here:

Norton Cyber Security Insights Reports Oct 2016

Nov 16, 2016:

Norton by Symantec, released findings from the annual Norton Cyber Security Insights Report, which sheds light on the truth about online crime and the personal effect it has on consumers. The most common cybercrime consumers experienced was mobile device theft (24 percent), followed by account password compromised (22 percent) and hacks into email accounts (21 percent).

The report also found that consumers who were victims of cybercrime within the past year often continued their unsafe behavior. For example, in Malaysia, even though victims used passwords, they were likely to share their password with others, negating their efforts.

Furthermore, given the rampant rate of cybercrime, the complacency in consumer behavior is concerning. In Malaysia, among those with at least one unprotected device, almost two in five (38 percent) said they don’t need protection because they don’t do anything “risky” online. Interestingly, 74 percent of consumers know they must actively protect their information online, yet they are still sharing passwords and engaging in other risky behaviors. 34 percent of people have at least one unprotected device leaving their other devices vulnerable to ransomware, malicious websites, zero days and phishing attacks.

Other trends:
  1. Consumers admit the risks are real
  2. Bad habits are hard to break – online or otherwise
  3. Overconfidence in connected devices leaves consumers vulnerable
  4. Malaysians are falling prey to ransomware

Hitachi Data Systems Delivers Industry’s First and Only Object Storage Portfolio With Content Intelligence Capabilities

Nov 16, 2016 :

With the number of data producers and consumers continuing to grow, businesses are drowning in data. And while 36% of the average day is spent on consolidating information, users find only 56% of the data they need.

To transfer data into valuable business information, object storage content intelligence – with search and analytics capabilities, is needed to address the challenges of exploring and discovering relevant, valuable and factual information across the growing number of data producers and siloed repositories that plague organizations.

By aggregating multistructured data, insights can be surfaced faster, data management and governance can be more complete, and the distribution of organizational data based on its value to the business, can be better understood. This can be as true for financial compliance information architecture as it is for digital transformation & analysis of structured and unstructured data for records-keeping, from dozens of source applications.

ISACA : Singapore Enterprises Are Cautious About Augmented Reality Despite Business Benefits

Nov 14, 2016 - SG -

With this year’s release of Pokémon Go, awareness of augmented reality (AR) applications soared among organizations and consumers. Despite its popularity and potential business benefits, AR adoption rates are slow among enterprises, according to a new study from global business technology and cybersecurity association ISACA. The study coincides with ISACA’s first CSX 2016 Asia Pacific conference, which opens today in Singapore.

Many organizations quickly leveraged the popularity of Pokémon Go as an opportunity to attract customers. However, ISACA’s 2016 IT Risk-Reward Barometer indicates that organizations are still hesitant to use AR for business purposes, and consumers also have concerns about the possible risks of Internet of Things (IoT) devices enhanced with AR. Only 21 percent of the 6,591 professionals surveyed are convinced that the benefits of AR outweigh the risks—the majority remain unsure.

“We expect to see this number change in the very near future as businesses begin to view AR as a valuable technology that results in positive business outcomes, including improved training, education, marketing and customer experience,” said Rob Clyde, board director of ISACA and executive advisor at BullGuard Software.

All About Singles Day (11.11)

They say inspiration comes from unexpected places, and the story behind Single's Day (Alibaba's annual sale and Asia's biggest) is definitely a unique one. Who could have guessed that an Anti-Valentine’s Day event organized by 4 single university students would eventually become a national phenomenon, not to mention a multi-billion-dollar annual event? Long-running holidays like Valentines, Halloween and Christmas have given online shopping sites boosts in their sales, so it's very interesting to see an event so recent become so big.

One of the reasons why Singles Day was well received was because of its duration. Singles Day Sales in China and Southeast Asia usually run for a month from November 11 (11.11) to December 12 (12.12), making it more than just a simple transaction. Another reason for its success is its ability to connect with its market. With men outnumbering women in a population of over 1.37 billion people, Singles Day was not only timely, it was relatable.

Due to its success, Alibaba then trademarked Singles Day and other related terms such as Shuang Shi Yi (double eleven) in China. 11.11 has grown from a university tradition into Asia's (if not the world's) most successful annual sale. In 2015, Alibaba broke records and had a total revenue of USD14.3 billion, surpassing the combined revenue of other annual sales like Thanksgiving (USD 1.09 billion) and Black Friday (1.66 billion) in the US.

Are you prepared for your next data disaster?

by Matthew Johnston, Area Vice President, ASEAN & Korea, Commvault

Just like the two Little Pigs who had their flimsy houses of straw and wood blown down one fateful afternoon by the Big Bad Wolf, many businesses today are still taking their chances with data disasters. Those two Little Pigs couldn’t have anticipated an attack from the Big Bad Wolf out of the blue, but had they decided to err on the side of caution and invest in a robust infrastructure like the third Little Pig who built his house out of bricks, they might’ve avoided their sorry fate.

Matthew Johnston, Area VP, Commvault

Only recently, a computer outage caused worldwide delays for thousands of passengers booked on Delta Airlines. There may have been bigger data disasters than the one Delta experienced in August when its IT system went down, but that didn’t stop the Twittersphere from coming alive with 140-character snapshots of human misery – as can be expected when so many passengers suddenly find their travel plans interrupted.

Despite Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian saying the company had over the past three years invested "hundreds of millions of dollars in technology infrastructure upgrades and systems, including backup systems to prevent what happened from occurring", the crisis cost the company $100 million in revenue due to 2,300 cancellations over three days. The long-term damage to Delta’s reputation and business will likely cost more. In the highly competitive aviation industry where airlines are already struggling with declining profit margins, that’s a bitter pill to swallow.

Sadly, like the two Little Pigs, many companies across various industries lack solid data management strategies to protect themselves against such occurrences.

Cashback Rewards Feature Losing Its Lustre for Cardholders in Singapore, J.D. Power Finds

Oct 27, 2016 - Singapore :

More than half (52%) of credit cardholders in Singapore say they are motivated to use their primary card because of the ability to receive cashback rewards, but these cardholders end up being notably less satisfied with their issuer, according to the J.D. Power Singapore Credit Card Satisfaction Study,SM released today.

The study, now in its second year, measures customer satisfaction with their credit card issuer by examining six key factors: interaction; credit card terms; billing and payment; rewards; benefits and services; and problem resolution. Satisfaction is calculated on a 1,000-point scale.

Among cardholders who choose their card based on cashback, overall satisfaction is 712 and their monthly spend averages $1,022. In contrast, among cardholders who choose their card based on service-related reasons, such as better mobile/tablet app for account management, better customer service and better benefits, satisfaction scores are significantly higher (785, 753 and 745, respectively).

Closing in on the Data Skills Gap

By Matthew Johnston, Area Vice President, ASEAN & Korea, Commvault

The world in which we live, play and work is transforming right before our eyes. In today’s rapidly changing business and technology landscape, companies need to keep up quickly, or else risk being disrupted.

The ability to succeed in this digital era means increasing the speed at which ideation, innovation and collaboration can happen. While technology plays a big part in this equation, it’s not just the machines that make the magic happen, businesses need talented people equipped with a data-first mindset to transform your data into a powerful strategic asset.

According to Singapore’s Economic Development Board, the data analytics sector alone is set to contribute at least $1 billion to the economy each year by 2017. However, while 94 percent of Southeast Asia's business leaders agreed that it is important to have a data-savvy workforce, there is a skills gap that needs to be addressed in order for organisations to fully move ahead with a data-driven culture. Only 39 percent of those polled felt that they have employees with relevant data skills to help them identify and achieve business outcomes.

PIKOM BUDGET 2017 ‘Wish List’ For ICT Sector

Oct 13, 2016 -

In view of the upcoming Budget 2017, the National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) as the ‘Voice of the ICT Industry’ proposes the following recommendations to the Malaysian government for inclusion in the budgetary plans for the coming year.

Specifically, given the current economic challenges and rising living costs, PIKOM urges the government to improve the affordability and availability of ICT goods and services as a means to benefit the man-on-the-street. Given the prevalent usage and consumption of ICT today on a daily basis, the following measures recommended below will have a cascading effect not just on spurring the ICT industry but to also benefit almost every Malaysian. In addition, given the government’s welcomed move to introduce coding in schools, it is all the more imperative to ensure that ICT goods and services are affordable for Malaysia’s over 5 million schoolchildren not forgetting their families.

1.) GST Zero-Rated for ICT Products and Services

The impact of GST coupled with the weakening of the Ringgit has resulted in a slowdown for the local ICT retail sector. While it has impacted the retail sector, the most affected are the SME companies who contribute some 31% to National GDP employing about 56% of the local workforce. Prior to the implementation of GST, prices of ICT products did not attract any sales tax which has changed from 1 April 2015. This has resulted in consumer demand for ICT goods and services decreasing as prices became more expensive.

PIKOM recommends that ICT products and services be Zero-Rated. As ICT is used by almost all Malaysians, the will have a direct impact students, families, professionals, most notably on the lower and middle income groups. The 6% is a tremendous saving that will directly boost ICT demand but also encourage the continued development of a connected and knowledge based community.

500,000 Download Rogue ‘Pokémon Go’ App that Takes Control of Android Phones

Sep 15, 2016:

Kaspersky Lab experts have discovered a new malicious app on the Google Play store: “Guide for Pokémon Go”, capable of seizing root access rights on Android smartphones and using that to install/uninstall apps and display unsolicited ads. The app has been downloaded more than 500,000 times, with at least 6,000 successful infections. Kaspersky Lab has reported the Trojan to Google and the app has been removed from Google Play.

The global phenomenon of Pokémon Go has resulted in a growing number of related apps and, inevitably, increased interest from the cybercriminal community. Kaspersky Lab’s analysis of the “Guide for Pokémon Go” Trojan has uncovered malicious code that downloads rooting malware, securing access to the core Android OS for the purposes of app installation and removal as well as the display of advertising.

Cloudera’s Analytic Database Enables Unrivaled Elastic Scale, Agility, and Performance for BI and Analytics in the Cloud

Sep 28, 2016:

Cloudera, the global provider of the fastest, easiest, and most secure data management and analytics platform built on Apache Hadoop and the latest open source technologies, today released benchmark results that validate that Cloudera’s modern analytic database solution, powered by Apache Impala (incubating), not only delivers unprecedented capabilities for cloud-native workloads but does so at better cost performance compared to alternatives.

Impala uniquely offers elastic scalability, better flexibility, and direct Amazon S3 query ability unavailable from traditionally-architected systems such as Redshift. With a modern design, Impala decouples data and compute to provide the same high-performance SQL analytics whether cloud-natively over data in S3 or across a wide range of on-premise and cloud storage options. Furthermore, Impala enables all these capabilities while also delivering up to 275% more cost-efficiency and up to 10x greater performance compared to Amazon’s analytic database, Redshift, equating to more value all within an open platform

Using queries from the TPC-DS industry standard benchmark, Cloudera compared Impala running on the cloud (both cloud-natively over S3 and over local EBS storage) to Amazon Redshift (only able to run over its own storage on dedicated AWS instances). Results from the benchmark show:
  • Impala is over 200% less costly and over 10x faster on S3 compared to a general purpose tuned Redshift
  • Impala is still 8% less costly and 90% faster on S3 compared to a pre-tuned Redshift for specific fixed reporting queries
  • Impala is 28-275% less costly and 42-400% faster on EBS compared to either pre-tuned or general purpose tuned Redshift

Unable to Rollback from Windows 10 ? Go for a Clean Install

After upgraded from Window 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro during the free upgrade period, it resulted my PC (Thinkpad T440p) to be working partially efficient and sluggish, whereby issues such as shut down becomes restart was encountered.

Besides those, I also found that overall, using web browser become slower compared to in Windows 7 Pro.

Other observations include searching for 'Device Manager' would end up 'No result found'.

I did consider performing a clean install of Windows 10 on the PC altogether. Nonetheless, I wasn't sure where and how to get a license key for Windows 10, notwithstanding the Windows 7 Pro license key which came with the laptop purchase.

Today, I decided to downgrade back to Windows 7.

World Robotics Report 2016 announces collaborative robots as market driver

Oct 4, 2016 :

The World Robotics Report 2016, recently released by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) forecasts that compact, user-friendly collaborative robots will become a key driver in the automation market. The report predicts the worldwide annual sales of industrial robots to increase by at least 13 percent on average per year from 2017 to 2019. Human-robot collaboration will have a “breakthrough” in this period, enabling robots and humans to work safely side-by-side without any fences, while increasing production efficiency and quality.

“As the market leader of the cobot industry, Universal Robots welcomes the report which confirms the validity of our mission: lowering barriers and enabling automation in areas previously considered too complex or costly,” said Chief Commercial Officer of Universal Robots, Daniel Friis.

“Our installed base of more than 10,000 cobots worldwide illustrates the dramatic growth potential of this game-changing automation technology. We enable small and medium-sized enterprises to optimise their competitiveness on the global stage with an industry leading payback period.”

Industries predicted by IFR to adopt cobots at an increasing rate include automotive, the plastics industry, electronics assembly and the machine tool industry. These are all key sectors in Southeast Asia, and where Universal Robots is seeing strong traction.

Kaspersky Lab Presents the First Cybersecurity Index

Sep 27, 2016 :

Do you know how safe – or unsafe – it currently is online? How many people run the risk of falling victim to cybercriminals today, without suspecting it? And how many have fallen victim already? To assess the situation Kaspersky Lab is launching its Kaspersky Cybersecurity Index – the first global index to measure the current cyberthreat levels faced by Internet users.

Kaspersky Lab has previously joined forces with B2B International to carry out regular large-scale online surveys in different countries, in order to evaluate how Internet users behave online, what their concerns are, what issues they face and how they defend themselves against possible threats. The Kaspersky Cybersecurity Index is based on this data, collected from thousands of users across the globe.

Data privacy: Gotta catch ‘em all

Michael Bishop, Regional Counsel, APAC, Commvault

Michael Bishop
Pokémon Go is all the rage at the moment. Many gamers in Asean – Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – can already be seen catching the Pokémon characters when the app launched in the region recently. Despite some commentators expressing concerns about the privacy implications of the app and others like it, the game is estimated to have been downloaded over 100 million times worldwide. However, there continue to be wide-ranging concerns over the manner the app is said to gain access to users’ private data.

While the app has used the disruptive nature of Augmented Reality to drive a further paradigm shift in how we use and interact with technology, it has also raised broader privacy concerns over the type and volume of information collected by the app. As a lawyer and technophile, I am both excited by the possibilities of Augmented Reality and concerned over these wider privacy implications.

The personal data and information collected by the app is a critical, strategic business asset and a rich source of innovation and value. Companies that best manage that asset while enriching customer experience, do so through a holistic data management policy. That policy should offer a meaningful data privacy experience through informed consent and collection, rigorous data security measures that prevent unauthorised access, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Oracle Beats Amazon Web Services in Head-to-Head Cloud Database Comparison

Sep 20, 2016 - Oracle OpenWorld, San Francisco:

Oracle Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer, Larry Ellison today demonstrated that Amazon databases are 20 years behind the latest release of the Oracle Database in the Cloud. In his keynote presentation at Oracle OpenWorld 2016 in San Francisco’s Moscone Center, Ellison shared detailed analysis that showed that Oracle Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) is up to 105X faster for Analytics workloads, 35X faster for OLTP, and 1000+X faster for mixed workloads than Amazon DBaaS. Ellison also showed that the Oracle Cloud is optimized for running Oracle Database while Amazon Web Services (AWS) is not. An Oracle Database running on the Oracle Cloud is up to 24X faster than an Oracle Database running on AWS.

Larry Ellison during keynote at the Oracle OpenWorld 2016

“Oracle’s new technologies will drive the Cloud databases and infrastructure of the future,” said Ellison. “Amazon are decades behind in every database area that matters, and their systems are more closed than mainframe computers.”

Ellison also announced the availability of Oracle Database 12c Release 2 in the Oracle Cloud with the launch of the new Oracle Exadata Express Cloud Service. This service provides the full enterprise edition of the Oracle Database running on the database-optimized Exadata infrastructure. Starting at just $175 per month, Ellison showed this Cloud service is lower cost than similar offerings from Amazon.

Malaysian Prepaid & Postpaid Mobile Plans Comparison

Check out this article (by which tips on choosing mobile plan - four factors to consider:

  • Usage
  • Extra Features
  • Convenience
  • Flexibility

In my personal opinion, I chose Maxis Postpaid notwithstanding the following reasons:

  • Loyalty - My first sim card was Maxis prepaid
  • Coverage - Based on experience, Maxis offers a better coverage in Klang Valley
  • Pricing - I am not so particular about pricing yet, currently, I am paying RM 88 for just a 1GB data plan
  • Data plan - I admit that my data plan does not offer big value for money, however, I am not a heavy data plan user because I subscribed to other broadband plans at home and workplace.
  • Payment - I make payment monthly online, no hassle - the bill also arrives timely monthly (very important).

It also offers comparison charts between prepaid and postpaid for Maxis, Digi, Celcom & UMobile.

Hitachi Targets US$6 Billion Video Security and Monitoring Market With New Video Management Platform Models and Strategic Partnerships

Sep 14, 2016:

While video monitoring traditionally supported physical security only, it is now being used to support new applications - such as for improving traffic congestion, increasing industrial and operational efficiencies, and supporting workplace safety.

These applications are driving a flood of “big video” data that requires enterprise-class storage, fast data recall, expanded data security and little-to-no degradation to effectively support real-time monitoring and analysis. But while most enterprise customers today are looking to embrace digitalization to transform their businesses, many existing video storage and monitoring solutions still rely on legacy technologies and analogue video formats that cannot fully capitalise on IoT or support analytics and advanced technologies.

Hitachi Insight Group – which drives the company’s business for Smart Cities, Digital Energy and Industrial IoT, today announced introduced three Hitachi Video Management Platform (VMP) models to address this gap in the video security and monitoring market.

Taking into account these difficulties, the UOB-ABS SME Banking Executive Certificate will impart specialist skills and the knowledge necessary for bankers to cater to the financial needs of small businesses.

The three-month programme combines classroom-based, experiential training in the areas of credit and risk management, SME business models and client management. This includes cultivating stronger issue-resolution and collaboration skills, which will enable them to help customers overcome financial challenges and in turn, build long-term relationships. Upon completion of the programme, UOB Malaysia’s Business Banking officers will have a deeper understanding of the characteristics of SMEs, business trends as well as the challenges companies face in Malaysia.

Five tips to build your data breach shield

by Kane Lightowler, Managing Director, Asia Pacific & Japan, Carbon Black

2016 has proved itself to be a prolific year for cybercrimes. Cyber criminals are leaving no stones unturned as we witness a number of high profile attacks on various sectors – healthcare, finance, media – just to name a few. The reality is in fact, much bleaker as millions of undetected and unreported cyber-attacks are happening on a daily basis. Yet, organizations and even governments, are turning a blind eye to these threats and are still relying on traditional methods of cybersecurity that were not designed to tackle the sophisticated threats present today.

Kane Lightowler, M.D, APAC, Japan, Carbon Black

The Australia Strategic Policy Institute reported that although cybercrime in the Asia Pacific region accounts for a significant proportion of global cybercrime, many developing economies still rely on rudimentary cyber capabilities and the support of foreign aid programmes. This may be surprising, but even more so, terrifying, as we ponder on these vulnerabilities and their potential consequences. According to the AT&T Cybersecurity Insights report in 2015, 64% of organizations acknowledged that they have been breached, and yet, only 34% of organizations believe they have an effective incident response plan.

Sure, there is no one size fits all when it comes to cybersecurity. However, there are some well tested guidelines and best practices that will keep any organization on the right track towards a comprehensive and robust cybersecurity infrastructure that is better primed to confront today's threat landscape.

25 things that are better because of Linux (and open source)

By John Terrill, Corporate Communications, Red Hat

Twenty-five years ago today via a short Usenet post, Linus Torvalds shared the first iteration of a free, hobby operating system that he had developed. Of course, what became known as Linux is now far, far more than a hobbyist’s OS and spawned a wave of innovation that significantly changed the IT landscape. While Linux is the poster child, open source is also about far more than an operating system (although it remains critically important!). The underpinnings of open source, from transparency and collaboration to freedom and broad dissemination, have spilled out well beyond the confines of enterprise technology to greatly impact both the world of consumer technology as well as the global business climate at large.

We’ve picked out 25 things that we think are better thanks to Linux and open source; some of these may not exist without an open source backbone, while others may have evolved out of necessity, but would likely be unrecognizable to today’s counterparts. So what made our list?

Global Industry
  1. Real-time trading - We take near-simultaneous financial transactions almost for granted, as being able to move money, make stock trades and conduct other financial transactions is functionally an on-demand service. But all of this would likely not be possible without the real-time functionality of the Linux kernel, which powers more than 50 percent of the world’s financial transactions and backs 100 percent of Fortune 500 banks.
  2. The global technology economy - Linux and other open source projects built on top of it have helped to drive the a standardization of IT, allowing for more interoperability across the world’s business environment. Via a common “language of IT,” services and software are better able to grow and evolve across traditional geographical boundaries, fostering a truly global technology marketplace.
  3. Government IT - Driven by the price efficiencies, innovation and scalability of first Linux and then open source at large, government agencies have a rich history in open source and are now driving towards becoming models of open source efficiency. Most recently, the U.S. federal government’s Second Open Government National Action Plan (pdf) emphasized use of open source, and contribution back to open source communities to help foster innovation and lower costs.
  4. Connected cities - Networking the critical aspects of a city, from manhole covers and traffic lights to emergency services and severe weather alerts, requires computing at a massive scale. It’s Linux, not a proprietary operating system, that provides this vast scalability while also offering the underlying capabilities to abstract the various computing layers to make managing such a complex deployment manageable.
  5. Air traffic control - The Federal Aviation Administration, the point of truth for North American aviation management, oversees nearly 24,000 flights per day...and it’s all run on the scalable, secure platform of Linux.
