Oracle 2015 ICT Outlook Statement

Oracle Malaysia published the 2015 outlook statement by Jimmy Cheah, Managing Director, Oracle Corporation, Malaysia

Jimmy Cheah opines that the moving forward ICT business landscape will be largely influenced by consumer-oriented demand such as the demand for mobility support of application and integration with social media.

Jimmy Cheah

To benefit from this trend, the challenge is budget constraints - such as maintaining and migration of legacy applications to support mobility and analytics in order to support a broader perspective.

Jimmy Cheah was quoted:

With a complete cloud offering, Oracle aims to be the trusted IT partner for local businesses by helping them to embark on Cloud. Oracle offers the industry’s largest portfolio of SaaS applications in the Cloud with customer experience applications, including sales capabilities; human capital management suite with social tools; and offer local enterprises industrial-strength ERP applications in the Cloud.

T-SQL: Querying a String Column as Date

This article applies to and experimented on MSSQL 2008 R2.

If you store a date time value as string into a varchar column and would like to perform T-SQL to query it like a normal datetime column, here is how you can achieve it:

For instance, assuming that the varchar column (varchar(50)) which a date time string is store is called 'cAttribute6' and the table name is called TBL_People, the following T-SQL will allow you to query the varchar column like a datetime.

where convert(datetime,cAttribute6,103)>='2014-12-11 18:00:00'

EMC bets on Hybrid Cloud for Malaysian Businesses

Today, 80% of Malaysian businesses already have Cloud Computing usage governance policies.

Cloud computing has been a buzzword for businesses and technology companies for several years now. In order to understand the state of Cloud adoption among Malaysian businesses, EMC conducted a survey in Malaysia.

Whether it’s for better competitiveness, higher returns on technology investment, or just better use of resources such as email and storage, Malaysian businesses today understand the value of cloud and its impact on business.

It is clear from the insights of this survey that what matters now is finding the right model of cloud which tailors to each business’ individual needs, i.e. a hybrid model that keeps the businesses’ needs and the sensitivity of its data at the core and brings the agility and speed of public and privacy of private cloud environments. The importance of Cloud itself is well understood.

Evolis Pebble 4 Unable to Encode Alphabet

Evolis Pebble 4 Card printer.

Tried to perform encoding using ISO1 format for alphabet characters but failed ?

The reason is because ISO1 only supports alphabet letter from A to Z upper case only, not lower case.

If you are trying to encode abc123, it will fail - you should ABC123 instead.

To encode lower case alphabet, you have to use the SIPASS format which supports ASCII characters from 16 to 127 - refer to ACSII table.

Running robots of future may learn from world’s best two-legged runners: birds

Based on a press release from Oregon State Edu.

Researchers found that the most efficient two-legged runners ever run on earth are running birds.

Running birds are found to have an impressive ability to run while minimizing energy cost, avoiding falls or injury, and maintaining speed and direction.

“Birds appear to be the best of bipedal terrestrial runners, with a speed and agility that may trace back 230 million years to their dinosaur ancestors,” said Jonathan Hurst, an associate professor and robotics expert in the OSU College of Engineering.

In collaboration with Monica Daley at the Royal Veterinary College in London, the researchers studied five species of birds and developed a computer model in OSU’s Dynamic Robotics Laboratory that closely matches that behavior.

Paragon Software See Big Potentials in Mobile App Segment

Based on a press release dated Oct 22, 2014.

Paragon Software Group, the world’s leading dictionary developer for mobile devices, tablets and PC, announces the major market trends in digital publishing with more than 1500 dictionary and reference applications downloaded and sold throughout the network of all major app stores worldwide in 2014. According to several major statistics companies, including analytic reports, the “education” and “reference” apps remain the leading categories for both Android and iOS. However, the growth for iOS apps is steadily decreasing, as the market matures. This tendency is confirmed with the recent findings of Paragon Software analysts.

Paragon sees potential in mobile app segment based on freemium business model - free basic features, paid advanced features.

According to the report, Paragon’s key markets for downloads and revenues. The top countries include Germany, the USA, the Russian Federation, Austria and Switzerland. The German-speaking regions of Europe account for almost 45% of the company’s revenue and approximately 28% of downloads.

This shows that the freemium business model is effective in English-speaking countries.

Gartner Reveals Top Predictions for IT Organizations and Users for 2015 and Beyond

Today is a public holiday in Malaysia, hence, I have some privilege to spend more time writings.

This is the question that everybody has in mind and do not know the answer. Nonetheless, deep in our hearts, we know that humanity has to move forward - just like death.

Bill Gates was once asked during a forum at University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia on 29-May-2013, about robotics and A.I and his response were:

He didn't see robotics adoptions will lead to more genocide wars, robots are good thing.

Over times, computer can get really smart, and when the computer takes over certain tasks, it will put pressure on social-economical fronts, nevertheless, we will have to adjust to that.

Bill Gates thinks that A.I is doable, nonetheless, unsure when that will come.

Brocade Advances Replication and Disaster Recovery Capabilities for Remote Data Centres

Based on a press release (Oct 14 2014) from Brocade.

Enterprises today face significant challenges from the explosive growth of data and application workload traffic driven by virtualization. To address these challenges and to provide near-zero downtime and continuous application availability, Brocade has expanded its Gen 5 Fibre Channel SAN portfolio with the addition of the Brocade 7840 Extension Switch, which delivers a six-fold increase in performance, along with unprecedented availability and simplified management between remote data centers. The solution also doubles the performance, at half the cost, compared to WAN optimization appliances that are often mismatched when deployed as a Disaster Recovery alternative.

Brocade 7840 switches offer both the industry’s first 40 Gigabits per second (Gbps) and 10 Gbps FCIP connectivity options, with data throughput speeds that are at least six times faster than competitive solutions. Brocade 7840 systems deliver an unprecedented 80 Gbps of application data throughput while securing data flows over distance with 256-bit IPsec encryption without a performance penalty.

Gartner: 50% of IoTs Solutions Will Originate in Startups

Based on an article from Gartner.

Makers and startups, not tech providers, consumer goods companies or enterprises, will drive acceptance, use and growth in the Internet of Things (IoT) through the creation of a multitude of niche applications, according to Gartner, Inc. Gartner predicts that by 2017, 50 percent of IoT solutions (typically a product combined with a service) will originate in startups that are less than three years old.

Pete Basiliere, research vice president at Gartner

Gartner defines "makers" as inventors, tinkerers and entrepreneurs who create and manufacture products using traditional tools and new digital design and rapid prototyping and manufacturing technologies. "Startups" are fledgling businesses that are often technology-focused and have the potential for high growth.

Mr. Basiliere cited the example of entrepreneurs and individuals who are leveraging the low-cost Arduino open-source electronics platform, entry-level 3D printers, and traditional woodworking and machine tools to build their own IoT devices. Gartner has found that these grassroots projects focus on managing and controlling devices in the home and are more focused on providing convenience (such as turning on the heat before you arrive home) than cost savings (the focus of enterprise-sector and public-sector IoT).

Asus G551 Gaming Notebook (Preview)

The reason I am interested in this product is because I am currently looking for replacement of consumer-based high-end Windows-based laptop for my Lenovo Thinkpad T410i, and I have been doing that for close to one year to date.

I have been a fan of IBM thinkpad series laptop ever since I could afford one. I found those old-fashion square-dull-looking and rugged laptop to be classy and inspired with certain self-gratification and grandeur.

Of course, IBM thinkpad has come a long way, even before the emergence of Macbook.

Hence, by the time I was ready to buy a serious laptop to complement my software programming work, I decided to purchase one.

The first one was IBM Thinkpad R60, second: Lenovo Thinkpad T410i and the third: Lenovo Thinkpad T440p.

Practo has a proprietary algorithm running in the backend, which ranks doctors listed on the site based on relevance – location and specialty, feedback from patients, and appointment experience. The number of appointments booked with a doctor in the last 30 days, doctor’s availability, and patient’s recommendations are key parameters to rank doctors.

The big break came when Sequoia Capital came on board with series A funding of US$4 million in July 2012. In the same year, Shashank and Lal launched – the doctor discovery and booking platform for patients who wanted to make an informed choice while hunting for the right doctor.

“The listing is free for doctors, as well as patients. Our revenues come from Practo Ray, the SaaS? product,” Pingle explains. Practo Search also carries contextual ads, based on what patients search for."

It took them 5 years to a funding of USD 4 million from Sequoia Capital.

World’s First Cloud-Connected Cable Certification Tool

Press release - Malaysia - Oct 8, 2014

Fluke Networks today announced LinkWare™ Live, the world’s first cloud-based service that enables contractors, cable installers and project managers using the Versiv™ family of certification testers to upload, manage, and analyze certification test results from cabling projects—anytime, anywhere.

Why it is important ? Key results from recent global surveys conducted by Fluke Networks with more than 1,000 cable installers (who had collectively installed approximately 1 million links in the previous month), clearly indicating a critical market need for a cloud-based cable test results management tool!
  • Poor management of cable test results takes a huge toll on productivity and profitability of a business:
  • The average time contractors spent dealing with test result issues in a single month was 15.2 hours—nearly two full workdays, not including the hours required to get the test results back to the office for analyzing and reporting
  • Eighty-three percent reported having one or more test results management issues in the month prior to the survey

Altium TASKING ARM Cortex-M : Embedded Development Tools for the Mac

Press release - Sydney, Australia – 2 October 2014

Altium Limited, a global leader in Smart System Design Automation, 3D PCB design (Altium Designer) and embedded software development (TASKING) announces the release of its TASKING VX-toolset for ARM Cortex-M for Apple Mac computers running OS X.

Traditionally embedded software development tools have been available exclusively for the Windows operating system and Altium has a long history in providing its TASKING cross compilers and debuggers for running on Windows, including its TASKING VX-toolset for ARM Cortex-M.

Eclipse based IDE with integrated compiler and debugger

With ARM Cortex-M based microcontrollers becoming popular in broad market consumer applications, especially with wearable electronics and electronic systems that can be controlled from the iPhone, it is apparent that embedded software engineers want to use the Mac as their development platform.

To serve this development community, Altium has developed a native OS X port of release v5.1r1 of its TASKING VX-toolset for ARM Cortex-M, bringing its C compiler suite with Eclipse based IDE and debugger to Mac computers.

Unable to Set IP Address for Evolis Pebble 4 Card Printer

I recently bought an Evolis Pebble 4 card printer for one project.

The printer supports both USB and TCP/IP connection.

While trying to configure the TCP/IP settings, I followed the instruction from the official manual - couldn't work.

I found that using the hostname: http://evo_pb4_xxxxxxx on a web browser, the configuration page couldn't load - where xxxxxxx is the last seven digits serial number from the left, i.e if the serial number is 1234567890123, then the hostname should be http://evo_pb4_7890123.

Locating the serial number from the sticker at the bottom of the printer, in this case, the serial number is invalid

Oregon State University: Mechanized human hands

Found this press release interesting.

Engineers at Oregon State University have developed and successfully demonstrated the value of a simple pulley mechanism to improve hand function after surgery.

The device, tested in cadaver hands, is one of the first instruments ever created that could improve the transmission of mechanical forces and movement while implanted inside the body.

Personally, I found it to be related to robotics. Nevertheless, according to the Oregon State University's spoke person, it is NOT robotic.

The new mechanism developed at OSU is not really robotic since it has no sensory, electronic or motor capabilities, Balasubramanian said. Rather, it’s a passive technology using a basic pulley that will be implanted within a person’s hand to allow more natural grasping function with less use of muscle energy.

Sophos Boosts Network Security Performance with SG Series Appliance

Sophos today announced a major market refresh of its network security gateway hardware in Malaysia to capitalize on and further advance, increases in new customer business for Sophos unified threat management (UTM) appliances.

Running on 4th generation Intel® Core™ processors, the Sophos SG Series appliances deliver up to four times the speed of the previous UTM generation appliances, bringing flexibility and simplicity to security for small and medium businesses (SMBs) and mid-market organisations.

Gerhard Eschelbeck, Sophos, CEO

“SMBs in Malaysia increasingly ride on technology trends such as bring-your-own-device (BYOD) and cloud computing for productivity, while mid-sized organisations struggle with data overload and not knowing what security solutions best fits their needs,” said Gerhard Eschelbeck, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President at Sophos. “Such technologies introduce new attack vectors and security risks for SMBs and mid-sized organisations, as their security management and awareness remain nascent. The new Sophos SG Series will prove to be a good return-on-investment, as it is not only affordable, makes up for their lack of IT expertise and saves time with easy and flexible deployment.”

Citrix on the Personal Digital Advantage

Based on a press release by Citrix, according to Nielsen’s smartphone penetration report, Malaysia ranks second highest in Asia Pacific at 80 percent.
Well, we have heard this many times, each proclaiming Malaysians being the top users for smartphones, social medias, social networking and etc.

And I have always thought that a sensible reason to explain these realities is that the mobile device presents an opportunity for social-economical liberation in what a conservative-governed country.

As a result of this, Citrix promotes that the combination of BYOD and consumerization of IT trends brings about what is known as Personal Digital Advantage trend.

Mark Micallef, Area Vice President of Citrix ASEAN opines that enterprises should capitalize on this trend, there are 5 things to consider:

1.) Creating seamless multi-device experiences for users
2.) Attention and information management
3.) Promoting the speed learning culture
4.) Leveraging and learning from real-time digital assistance
5.) Time warping through automation - multi-tasking

Gamdias Headset.. you raise me up higher (review)

Gamdias HEBE headset
The Gamdias HEBE Surround Sound Gaming Headset is an enormous headset for my moderate size ears. No doubt using it caters for better comfort and the headset covers the full ears instead of putting pressure towards edges of the ears, hence, reducing the longevity of discomfort when using headset for an extended period.

It is also a good looking headset. - it feels very Optimus Primish or rather Iron-manish.

In terms of sound quality, comparing with other headset products which I have experienced with, the Gamdias HEBE headset offers me a better range of vocal capability - i.e it is not so loud yet clearer, when it gets loud, it is doesn't feel noisy.

Also, it presents more raw and original output, in the sense that the output audio doesn't feel deliberately amplified - I mean to say that instead of shouting, it is capable of presenting real high vocal pitches.

Ovum's Commnets: Apple’s iPhone 6 and Apple Watch

Comments from Paul Jackson, Practice Lead, Media and Entertainment

The Good:

As expected the Apple Watch has a lovely design, and I like that they’ve thought of the screen obscuring issues that touch presents on such a small screen – hence the ‘crown’ controls. Features like sapphire screen, built-in heart-rate monitor and haptic feedback show an unusual level of technology leadership from Apple – who usually let others try and fail first. The charging solution is elegant and that crystal on the back is reminiscent of quality traditional pocket watches.

The interchangeable straps options and multiple cases and sizes also shows they have thought more about the fashion and jewellery elements compared to their competitors. This watch, along with the Moto 360 and LG G Watch R finally offer something non-techies might consider wearing. Digital Touch is reminiscent of Nintendo Pictochat with added heartbeat monitor – and is just as likely to be used once and then never again. The health and fitness apps look nice, but don’t improve significantly on other existing (and cheaper) solutions for those with more than a passing interest – it will thrive though if the various major players (Nike, Fitbit, Garmin) get behind the apps ecosystem

Blue Coat Reveals Security Risks From “One-Day Wonders” Websites

Press release - Kuala Lumpur - Sep 3, 2014

Blue Coat launches its latest security report which revealed that over 70 percent (470 million) Websites exist for only less than 24 hours and 22 percent of these ‘one-day’ Websites are used to facilitate cyber-attacks.
Ivan Wen

The report titled "One-Day Wonders: How Malware Hides Among the Internet's Short-Lived Websites" highlighted the following core findings:-
  1. Pornography website remains the most high-volume creators of One-Day Wonders and often these One-Day Wonders are malicious and used by cybercriminals taking advantage of the site.
  2. The largest generators of One-Day wonders also comes from organizations that have an extensive internet presence such as Google, Amazon and Yahoo that also practices legitimate internet activities.
  3. Of the top 50 parent domains that most frequently used One-Day Wonders, 22 percent were malicious. These domains use short-lived sites to facilitate attacks and manage botnets

Blue Coat recommends the followings for mitigation strategies:
  • Security controls must be informed by automated, real-time intelligence that can identify and assign risk levels to these One-Day Wonders. Static or slow-moving defenses do not suffice to protect users and corporate data.
  • Policy-based security controls must be able to act on real-time intelligence to block malicious attacks.

Microsoft: Hybrid Devices Will Rule

Microsoft recently published an infographic detailing why hybrid device (tablet + laptop) such as the Surface Pro 3 will gain in terms of popularity.

The argument presented was due to the rise of converged lifestyle (work and leisure) adopted by Malaysian and the less preferences for Siloed devices (using multiple devices for different dedicated purposes).

Yes. I personally feel that after years of tablet prominence, where consumers simply would buy additional devices just for the fun of it or for leisure alone, people may opt to just go back to having one mobile device that addresses all needs.

In terms of opportunity, it remains pretty much the same - mobile computing lifestyle will continue to grow and become more malignant towards modern people to compensate busy lifestyles.

Therefore, cloud computing, mobile apps and automation demands will maintain and grow.

Cyber security: Keeping track of threats to protect the rail network

Based on the contributed article by Ammar Hindi, Managing Director at Sourcefire Asia Pacific (now part of Cisco Systems)

In a nutshell, the article highlights greater anticipation towards the trend of security breaches onto public facilities such as the transportation system.

Each day, hundred thousands of passengers travel along Malaysia’s railways with the multiple public transport operators responsible for the tracks, signals, overhead wires, tunnels, bridges, level crossings and most stations. Technology is used across its network for everything from delivering power, signalling operations, and freight data, to maintenance, ticketing and passenger information.

Advances in IT technology on the railways for communication and control, but increasingly integrated and interconnected security operations, meant gaps had opened up on the network with the potential for hackers to cause “serious physical disruption and violation.

Therefore, as the facilities become more dependent on integrated IT technology, the risks become greater.

Cisco recommends that public transport organisations need comprehensive, continuous, visibility of their complex, dynamic, IT environments to understand how they use technology and what needs to be protected – only then can they tighten up the weaknesses in their defences and minimise the risk of compromise. Inevitably though, some attacks will get through, so organisations should look to solutions that enable them to quickly detect, understand and control an attack, ultimately minimising or avoiding any serious damage.

Dealing with Sales Call Harassment

Yes, it is without a doubt, sales call has always been annoying and to certain extend qualified for harassment.

For example, your trusted bank's insurance tele-sales department call you up to sell you insurance that you don't need and they want to close the sales on the spot by attempting to read the 10 pages terms and condition to you through the phone.

As a bank, they knew that you are not entitled to claim for personal accident's death benefits if your death does not result from accident, yet they pressed on and on.
Whoscall main screen showing unknown caller IDs

In my humblest opinion, this is not consulting nor personal financial servicing, this is purely hard-selling and bullying.

I recently found an Android app which helps to deal with such headache: whoscall, a mobile app which identifies unknown callers and provides features for blacklisting blocking.

It works side by side with your Android's phone book, call history - it reads your call history and categorizes calls, sms/mms into 4 categories: blocked, unknown, known contact and favorite.

By leveraging on the unknown category, one would be able to figure out the identity of the uninvited caller or sms/mms originator based on information contributed by community.

The best feature which I favor is the phone number search feature which allows input of phone number as search query, something which my existing Android version 4.4.4 hasn't yet cater. The search will output information of the number, be it a number of your known contact or unknown contact, alongside other contributed information from the community associated with the caller ID.

Before Google Maps, there was Esri; Now Geotrigger

I thought this press release is rather interesting because it kind of electrified the neurons in my brain and allows me to walk down the memory lanes - indeed, I remember vividly the brand name Esri, I thought it went hibernating for a while and it feels like decades.

Before Google Maps, there was Esri. I have seen Esri application, they were selling GIS software.

Google Maps came in and pushed everybody aside, that was around year 2005, before iOS and Android phones were even available.

Esri now introduces geotrigger technology.

It is a technology which empowers personalised instant alerts to be triggered by virtual boundaries and sent directly to consumers’ smartphones are the new weapon being investigated by retailers to gain a competitive edge.

The technology targets retail stores, using smartphones to entice customers into their stores and make an immediate purchase.

Isn't that interesting ?

How it works is that retail store owners will have to engage mobile app developer to develop a mobile app which will make use of the Geotrigger SDKs and API by Esri. Once installed by users, the mobile app will trigger alerts, promotions, time-sensitive discounts or loyalty bonuses to potential customers as soon as they are near the stores.

Malaysia’s Outsourcing Sector Sees 27 Per cent Jump in Overseas Revenue in 2013

Press release - Malaysia - Jul 30, 2014

Outsourcing Malaysia (‘OM’), an initiative of PIKOM, today shares its latest record of the country’s outsourcing industry in terms of an overall revenue achievement of RM1.59 billion in FY2013, as compared to RM1.25 billion in FY2012 from overseas outsourcing opportunities and projects.

Outsourcing is one of the Entry Point Projects (EPP) under the Business Services NKEA of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) which focuses on areas of business such as business process outsourcing (BPO), IT process outsourcing (ITO) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO).

David Wong, the Chairman of OM

David Wong, the Chairman of OM says, “This 27 per cent increase in just one year to RM1.59 billion in total revenues, is pretty significant for Malaysia’s outsourcing industry which is still relatively small as compared to those of other regional countries.”

Wong attributes a driver to this positive earnings growth to the Malaysian government’s various initiatives via the ETP and industry-wide efforts.

However Wong says, “There’s still a lot of room for improvement as out of this RM1.59 billion in overseas revenue, only 25 percent is generated by local outsourcing players while the rest of the 75 percent is by their foreign shared services players that are based in Malaysia,” explains Wong.

Disney Tsum Tsum Mobile Game and Soft Toy Line Launch Globally

This is quite interesting to me because it shows how one can sell something through a game developed on top of a social media platform.

Disney on Jul 10, 2014, announced the launch of “LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum”, the top-ranked and free puzzle app from Japan, on mobile devices globally, along with a Disney Tsum Tsum stackable soft toy line. The app, which is published by LINE, the leading free call and messaging app, has reached the #1 free app spot on both iOS and Android in Japan and has been downloaded more than 14 million times. Coinciding with the global launch of the app, Disney Store is introducing more than 30 different stackable ‘Tsum Tsum’ toys available on, in select store locations in North America, and at Disney Parks starting today.
