US President Obama Recognizes LASIK Eye Surgey Scientists

Not many of us actually know that IBM research was part of the team who founded the LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) that we know today. Their remarkable journey took them 14 years from initial experiment until FDA approval in 1995.

President Obama recognized a team of three IBM scientists -- James J. Wynne, Rangaswamy Srinivasan and Samuel Blum -- with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the country's most prestigious award given to leading innovators for technological achievement. With more than a combined 100 years of service at IBM Research, they are receiving this award for designing, developing, and implementing laser technology that improves people’s health, including LASIK eye surgery.

President Obama will personally bestow the award to the IBMers at a special White House ceremony at a later date. IBM has earned the National Medal of Technology and Innovation on nine other occasions.

Listviewitem Inserted But Missing

This is applicable to development using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1; .NET framework 3.5.

The issue is that some ListViewItem(s) were successfully inserted, but yet seemed to have gone missing.

Further check revealed that it was due to the presence of double instances of the ListView control with the same name, resulted in some ListViewItem(s) inserted to the other duplicated ListView; instead of the one showing on screen.

In this scenario, it happened when the Form, which was the parent to the ListView control, was disposed and a new instance was created. The disposal wasn't quite successful, resulted in presence of the double instances of the ListView control with the same name.

The Form was also a MDI child to another parent Form.

Oracle Java surpasses Adobe Reader as the most frequently exploited software

According to the recently published Kaspersky Security Bulletin 2012, Oracle Java was the most frequently exploited software by cybercriminals during the year, with Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player ranking in the second and third places, respectively.

Exploiting vulnerabilities is one of the primary methods used by cybercriminals to install malware on victims’ computers. Cybercriminals exploit applications or software that have un-patched security vulnerabilities, which exist because either the individual or business have failed to patch their vulnerable applications with the latest security updates from vendors.

Exploit packs – or malicious programs that try to infect a computer utilizing various vulnerabilities in popular software – are the main tool behind web-based attacks.

2012 A Year In Review

Before that, let's look at what had been predicted for 2012 in 2011 and how they fared.

Generally, most of the prediction happened without big bang. For instance, APTs, yes there were some APTs, madwares and prominent security threats. We have concluded that the following security threats are most menacing.
  • Koobface - Koobface gang earned millions of dollars every year by compromising computers until Jan 2012 in which they were busted by authorities.
  • OSX.FalshBack.K - affected 700,000 computers all running under Mac OS X in the first half of 2012. aka Trojan-Downloader.OSX.Flashfake.ab [Kaspersky]
  • Trojan.OSX.FakeCo.a - accounted for 52% of OS X malware infection for second half of 2012 - this malicious program masquerades as a video codec installation file.
  • Flamer - APT - the most complex malware threat since Stuxnet and Duqu
  • Android.Opfake - Android malware; variant of FakeInst SMS Trojan which accounted for 60% of total Android malware infection.
  • SMSZombie - Android malware - infected more than 500,000 devices in China.
  • Gauss - APT
  • Shnakule - malnet (malware network)
  • Gozi Prinimalka - APT

Big data, sure. Things happened in certain ways but we haven't yet quite see any realistic implementation.

Cloud and virtualization were the heroes of 2011 and they are responsible to spur all sort of new product offerings in 2012. Mobility was pretty much confined to launches of new mobile devices and platforms and apps.

Hence, as what had been predicted, 2012 was about cloud, virtualization, big data, mobile and security.

Now,let's look at the details.

Jan 2012

No one would ever expect that the free world; USA would go all lengths to shutdown a leisure-based content sharing site albeit all legality involved about intellectual property - U.S. government shut down Megaupload.com content sharing website. Others include:

Twitter Incorporates Built-In Image Filters

By Avtar Ram Singh

It’s no secret that Twitter and Instagram haven’t been getting along too well in recent weeks. Following the announcement by Instagram that their image cards would now no longer show up on Twitter, users would have to go to the Instagram website to check out previews and large scale images of the all photographs on Instagram. Most analysts do believe that this is part of Facebook’s campaign to step up their competition against Twitter, even though the two are vastly different in what they offer to their users. The new built-in image filters that have been incorporated by Twitter therefore, are the result of a direct hit back by the social networking firm. Their image filters have been released for their Android application and offers eight filters that include vignette, black and white, warm, cool, vintage, cinematic and a few others.

Computer Security Updates Week 4 of Nov 2012

Refer to Computer Security Updates Week 3 of Nov 2012.

Gozi Prinimalka

A new APT (Advanced Persistent Threat) was identified; Gozi Prinimalka.

Derived from the Russian word meaning ”to receive” and alluding to a Trojan drop point, the word “Prinimalka” appears as a folder name in every URL path given by the gang over the years to its crimeware servers.

It was planned to target 30 American banks in an effort to complete fraudulent wire transfers via Man-In-The-Middle (MiTM) manual session-hijacking scenarios.

It is also unique in a way that this plan to attack american banks premises on the model of campaign whereby masterminds are recruiting accomplices who are known as botmasters to join the attack. Each botmaster is expected to find own investor who will put down the money required to purchase equipment for the operation (servers, laptops) with the incentive of sharing in the illicit profits.

Investors will eventually make a profit from the funds they will siphon from victims' accounts.

Gozi Prinimalka works on the basis of Man-In-The-Middle (MiTM) manual session-hijacking scenarios.

Unlike those C & C server (command and control) threats such as Flamer and Gauss which malwares would contact C & C servers via dynamic URLs for next instruction, Gozi Prinimalka's servers are man-handled.

It is comparable to Zeus, Citadel trojan horse.

Single Sign On allows employees to login to all these applications using the same login ID and password. This is achieved by the technology known as LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) which stores user information including login and passwords in a central repository and hosts services to allow applications to retrieve these stored login records for authentication. Microsoft has its own LDAP technology famously known as Active Directory.

Using LDAP technology, employees are only required to use the same login ID and password of their enterprise email to login to the application.

EZLogin Single Sign On solution supports the following features:
  • Multi-factor authentication – requires users to provide more than one form of authentication. For instance, a SMS will be sent to users during login attempts in other to verify login authenticity. EZLogin provides multi-factor authentication with one-time password via e-mail or SMS for access to your account.
  • Single administration point – similar to LDAP
  • Integrates with Active Directory – make use of logins from Active Directory
  • Reports - usage, billing

Apple and the Christmas Rush

By Avtar Ram Singh

One thing that has always held true for gadgets is that they make a great gift for the holiday period. Christmas rolls around and everyone waits for their gifts, and over the last couple of years, instead of sweaters and clothing, everyone looks forward to perhaps a new phone or a new tablet. With this in mind, Microsoft decided to release the Surface, and Apple decided that it would be a good time to release information on the iPad 4 and the iPad Mini.

Oracle’s “Designing an M2M Platform for the Connected World” Report

Oracle announced the results of its “Designing an M2M Platform for the Connected World” research, examining the evolving drivers behind ‘Machine to Machine’ (M2M) projects and how those changes are impacting solution requirements.

The research, which was produced by M2M analyst experts Beecham Research on behalf of Oracle, provides a qualitative assessment of solution requirements across the M2M value chain. Participants included end-users, major product OEMs , systems integrators, mobile network operators and M2M platform providers in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

The research found that M2M data from remotely located assets and devices in the field is increasingly being used more broadly for strategic purposes and value creation throughout the enterprise. It has also become a means for creating new market opportunities while providing a competitive advantage for enterprise users in their own key markets.

Other key findings included an increased focus on leveraging the cloud and managing data security in M2M initiatives, as more information is integrated and shared across departments and business functions.

Symantec Simplifies SMB Security in Malaysia with Cloud-ready Endpoint Protection

Malaysian SMEs or SMBs rule the country micro economy, in a manner which there are more SMEs in Malaysian comparing to countries such as Singapore. The reason for this is budget - companies in Malaysia usually have lower budget allocation for IT.

It was reported in Nov 2011 by Google that Malaysia has about 700,000 SMEs, out of which only 100,000 had web sites. More so, enterprise IT budget in Malaysia is comparable to medium size companies' budget in countries like USA and U.K. Hence, SME is a big market and pretty much untapped.

From my observation, SMEs are no dummies, though with limited IT budgets, they do find their way around for solutions to help with business needs. SMEs benefited greatly from free services and software application from all over the cyber space such as Google Apps, webmails and even using Social Media for sales and marketing.

Most SMEs will only buy limited software licenses with business accounting software being top in the list. I would reckon that they spend considerable amount of money onto computer equipments, telecommunication and Internet and yes security software. More than that, they usually do not allocate much budget for anything else - but yes, security software is in the list.

Reuters reported that US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said cyberspace battlefront is the future of wars.

Well, I agree with him. That is the natural path.

Eugene Kaspersky, CEO and co-founder of Kaspersky Lab also shared similar thoughts when he said that “In the long run, cyber-warfare is where all parties lose: attackers, victims and even uninvolved observers,” said Eugene during his keynote speech at the ITU Telecom World 2012 conference. He pointed out that the viable solution is via international cooperation and advanced technology as the key requirements to survive the age of cyber-warfare. Kaspersky cited that causes of events like the 2003 blackout in U.S. and Canada were results of both a software failure and an inability to monitor the real state of energy systems.

Symantec Launches New BYOD Solutions For Developers

Symantec Corp. announced new offerings in Malaysia to help businesses accelerate their mobility initiatives. The offerings include two new programs – the App Center Ready Program designed to help developers rapidly build trusted enterprise apps with no code changes, and the Mobility Solution Specialisation Program for channel partners – as well as a single mobile suite spanning device management, application management and mobile security.

According to the Malaysia findings of Symantec’s 2012 State of Mobility Survey, nearly half (44 percent) of the organisations in Malaysia surveyed see mobility as a challenge that requires effort to manage. Symantec is simplifying this process by working directly with app developers and implementation partners to create a developer program that businesses can rely upon.

Enterprise Ready Trusted Mobile Apps

Symantec App Center Ready Program allows mobile application developers to embed Symantec’s security and management features, such as encryption, authentication, data loss prevention policies, app distribution and revocation, into their apps without changing their source code. IT organisations with Symantec App Center can now confidently deploy these apps across both iOS and Android platforms with the same level of management, protection and trust as in-house apps.

Mobile application developers in the program can accelerate adoption by addressing concerns around information security. Participating developers will speed up time to market by eliminating additional coding and gain visibility for their apps through Symantec’s App Center Ready catalogue, which lists all trusted apps certified by Symantec. Developers can now focus on the functionality of their apps to create a great user experience while taking full advantage of Symantec’s strengths in protection and management. The initial members of the program include popular business applications, such as Branchfire iAnnotate, Damaka Xavy, Emtrace MoxierMail, GoodReader, iKonic Apps, Infraware Polaris Office and Picsel SmartOffice.

Mobility Solution Specialisation for Channel Partners

Symantec is announcing a dedicated mobility channel specialisation program that will allow partners to offer Symantec’s enterprise mobility products to their customers. The Mobility Solution Specialisation will cover the full Symantec Mobile Management Suite and will provide partners with access to opportunity registration, expert resources, enablement programs, and accreditations in a multi-tier model.

Partners participating in Symantec’s Mobility Specialisation will be able to establish compelling practices around enabling mobility with an end-to-end solution. By allowing partners to solve complex, enterprise-class mobility initiatives instead of point projects, Symantec’s portfolio can lead to multiple opportunities for value-added services as well as sustainable revenue streams. This program will be available to channel partners globally by the end of 2012.

“Businesses in Malaysia today are relying more on mobility than ever before with more people working in multiple locations, at various times, and on a number of different devices. Symantec’s Mobility Survey in Malaysia highlighted an uptake in mobile applications across organisations in Malaysia with 67 percent of enterprises in the country at least discussing deployment of custom mobile applications,” said Alex Ong, country director of Symantec Malaysia.

Blogging On Through 2012 and Beyond

There is always this revelation when I attended some events such as "they invited bloggers too?"

Ya. We got invited.

And my thoughts are these.

First of all, blog has been around way back since 2000.

I would say that blog shouldn't be part of mainstream media, it should be under social media. Also I think that bloggers don't want to be part of mainstream media because we wouldn't want to be involved with licensing constraint and red tapes. Whatever bloggers mention should be something unbiased with a bit focus on personal experiences.

Also let's not forget that enterprises can setup their own blogs which as the matter of fact, most already do. Even mainstream medias like WSJ have blogs.

And how about AllThingsD ? It is a blog fundamentally and Walter Mossberg once said that bloggers are journalists. And how about politicians and etc?

Ok I guess sometimes it ain't fair for people who didn't study journalism to be considered journalists just because they do blogging stuffs.

However, the whole media industry is actually still evolving and we are not sure how it will end up. Truth to the matter is it hasn't stopped evolving since the birth of Internet and search engines.

So, I would say that people like Google, Facebook, Twitter are the main stewards of the media industry, not bloggers and printers.

What is most important is mainstream media, social media and alternative media should represent third party opinions as much as possible and for this reason, social media would do it better because it is more personal-oriented and less business driven. How's that ??

At the end of the day, if we are talking about having big data, social media matters. It is absolute meaningless to talk about big data while trying to sideline social media for information.

Like it or not, the world has to move forward. Technology has to penetrate deeper into our daily lives. Big enterprises like IBM, Fujitsu, BMW and etc are clearly moving along this path of having technology co-exists in harmony with people. IBM calls it Smarter Planet, Fujitsu calls it Human-Centric-Intelligent-Society while BMW calls it ConnectedDrive.

As a result, some people will have to adopt new lifestyles and change job. But how about let's just say that venturing out-of-space is more excited than making a living - in the long run ?

Civilization has to move forward.

BMW Launches Hybrids 3 Series and 5 Series with ConnectedDrive Concept

ConnectedDrive - BMW's Innovation

The BMW ConnectedDrive concept is referring to an idea of enabling the driver to be connected to the outside world while driving. Ideally, when such is achievable, the driver is in full control.

For instance, while driving from KL to Penang, the drive must be in touch with the status of the engine, fuel level, road condition, weather condition, changes to business appointments and etc.

It is not just about being high-tech, it is about being ideal.

To simply put, ConnectedDrive is the intelligent networking of driver, vehicle and the outside world. BMW figures that it can be expressed on four levels: 1.) the display and operating concept, 2.) an unparalleled light installation, 3.) the design of the car itself and 4.) the integration of the whole concept into a multimedia experience.

It promotes three key attributes of BMW’s vehicles, namely 1.) safety, 2.) infortainment, 3.) comfort.

Blue Coat MACH5 Appliance Wins Computerworld Readers Choice Award for WAN Optimization

Blue Coat Systems, Inc., a market leader in Web security and WAN optimization, announced that the Blue Coat® MACH5 appliance has won the Computerworld Singapore and Computerworld Malaysia Readers Choice Award in the “WAN Accelerator” category. This is the fourth consecutive win for Blue Coat, which demonstrates the strength of the solution and value it provides to customers that are embracing cloud-based applications, bring your own device (BYOD) initiatives and video technologies.

“The shift to cloud-based applications and BYOD trends is here to stay. This will only put additional strain on enterprise networks and increase corporate requirements for WAN optimization. IT departments will need a solid strategy to distinguish recreational traffic from business-relevant applications. With its fourth consecutive win, Blue Coat has clearly demonstrated that it has the answer to the ever-evolving needs of the industry in both markets,” said Jack Loo, editor, Computerworld Singapore.

In addition to traditional data acceleration, Blue Coat MACH5 appliances also provide next-generation WAN optimization to mitigate the impact of live and on-demand video, accelerate the delivery of cloud-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications and manage mobile devices on the corporate network. MACH5 appliances use advanced caching technologies to prevent video floods and bandwidth consumption associated with employee-owned devices from saturating a company’s WAN or Internet gateway. Blue Coat’s asymmetric acceleration technology optimizes the performance of cloud-based applications without deploying WAN optimization devices in the application provider’s infrastructure.

“This win is a vote of confidence from the IT community in two ASEAN countries where Blue Coat has strong market presence. It validates that organizations continue to value Blue Coat’s complete and innovative approach to WAN optimization in meeting the needs of businesses with distributed employees,” said Simon Molenberg, managing director for ASEAN, Blue Coat Systems.

AIMS want to continue playing a major part by being a key data center operator that ensures that its direction and business operations are aligned with the government’s nation building plans via the EPP3 program for the ICT sector.”

“CJ1 is a key part of AIMS Group’s growth and will quickly contribute significantly to our climb up to be the leading carrier-neutral data centre operators and managed services provider in Asia.”

New CA ERwin r9 Helps Customers Make Smarter Use of Enterprise Data

ERworld Online Conference October 22-25, 2012

ERWin Whitepaper Library

CA Technologies announced a major new release of its award-winning CA ERwin data modelling solutions that help organisations increase data quality and cost savings through a unified view of strategic data assets.

The new release—the second in less than a year—provides a collaborative data modelling environment to manage enterprise data using an intuitive, graphical interface. It helps improve data re-use, optimise system quality, accelerate time-to-benefit and enable appropriate information governance—key objectives for IT organisations serving companies in today’s highly competitive and intensely regulated markets.

“Consistent, accurate and up-to-date information across systems and business functions is one of the keys to success for IT organisations supporting highly complex enterprises running large numbers of disparate systems,” said Stefan Kausch, CEO at heureka e-Business GmbH, a leading provider of media streaming, web analytics, system management and web development solutions. “The new CA ERwin solution set directly addresses the challenges these organisations face as they seek to build and maintain these models over time—especially when it comes to making sure that all stakeholders can contribute to the model and use it to the organisation’s overall advantage.”

CA ERwin r9 includes significantly improved collaboration features—on the “back end” with a re-architected model repository and on the “front end” with enhancements to the web portal—that enable non-technical users to make important updates to business-centric metadata. It also includes support for corporate security policies and industry-standard protocols, such as LDAP. These new capabilities enable disparate teams of business and IT users to more easily work together to enforce standards, assess the impact of change, and manage data assets more effectively.

“In a data-driven economy, any disconnect between data consumers and producers can have a serious adverse impact on the business,” said James Forbes-May, Vice President, Data Management, Asia Pacific, CA Technologies. “By enabling organisations to collaborate more effectively to resolve these disconnects, CA ERwin r9 can help them more successfully manage and leverage their data resources. We’re especially pleased to deliver these capabilities to our customers so quickly since our last major release earlier this year.”

CA Technologies is the global market share leader in data modelling tools, based on 2010 revenues, according to IDC.* CA ERwin has repeatedly won awards for business value and innovation from publications such as SD Times, SQL Server Magazine and Visual Studio Magazine. It has also been the “Overall Category Winner” in TechExtend’s “Riding the Crest” awards for 13 consecutive years.

CA ERwin is available exclusively through global channel partners.
